This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested an item of school uniform from the Matalan Teflon Stain Resistant Range.

Here’s what Matalan say “Our Teflon stain resistant coating is designed to repel water and stains, restricting stains from absorbing into the fabric. We know kids will be kids and we want to help you keep them looking smart for school and make sure their school uniform lasts.”

I was aware of Matalan's range of school uniforms and have purchased from them before. I was not aware of the Teflon Stain Resistant Range hence why I was interested in taking part.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
Great value for money, lovely fit, kept its pleats after washing. Stains were washed out easily.

It was much better from the uniform I usually buy from Asda and Tesco. The age 12 skirt I bought fitted my age 12 daughter perfectly with some room in it for her to grow and the length was perfect too. She loved the fit too.

Yes definitely as long as it matches the quality of the item I purchased.

I was very disappointed that there were no polo shirts in the range, grey shorts don't tend to have a problem with staining however pale blue polo shirts do.

My son finds them very comfortable, and he looks very smart. Good fit for him as he's not a skinny - whilst not overweight, we can struggle to find a good waist/leg length ratio so these were great.

Good value and so far standing up to the test of a very rough and tumble little boy. Wash well, dry quickly and look smart. Oh and they don't need ironing

Not really - I hadn't been to Matalan for a while. I guess I knew that they did school uniform, but didn't know anything about what the range was like or the Teflon range.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?

Seems good. So far it has washed well and worn well and DD seems to like it.

Q3. How did the Matalan item of school uniform your child tested compare to the school uniform items you typically purchase? Please refer to fit, style, and comfort in your answer.

Fit seems to be a little more generous than some other brands. DD is 9 but very tall and generally wears age 13-14, so that was the size we bought. It fits fine, but the waistband is pulled right in, which is unusual for her. Style is similar to other skirts that she has, which works fine (although school ar not overly prescriptive) and she seems to choose it over alternatives so I am guessing it is comfortable as she is very quick to reject things which she doesn't find comfortable.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?

Hoping not to need more for a while, but would definitely consider Matalan when we do - although our most local branch is very far from being convenient to visit.

Yes, if asked - it seems good value for the price and meets school requirements.

2 i thought culottes were a nice idea and liked that it was a soft stain resistant fabric. i thought the fit was poor a very large waist and the crotch was cut badly. the fabric looked cheap

No, I'd never even considered Matalan for school uniform.

I tested the pinafore and thought it was lovely and smart. It seems to have washed well so far too.

I had to buy the next side up as they didn't have the right size in stock. However it actually fit really nicely and didn't look too big. The style and shape were alot nicer than our previous pinafore. Daughter seemed to like it so thing comfort-wise it was fine.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?

I'd definitely call at Matalan in the future. I did however feel that they had limited range in the Navy uniform that I needed (hence getting a size up). If they'd had more navy uniform in stock when I visited I'd have bought a couple of school cardigans, however they only had black or grey on the sizes I needed.

Yes, I feel that it is good value for money and appears to be a better quality than supermarket brands.

We were very restricted to what we could get. There wasn't much choice so I ended up getting a pinafore dress. It was very nice, not something dd has worn before but she liked it.

My dd usually wears trousers so this was a nice change. The fit was fine, my dd is very tall so have to buy a few sizes bigger.

I would possibly consider going there if I was passing but the lack of choice and sizes put me off a bit.

I would happily recommend the item dd has been wearing. I never iron and was wary this may need to be ironed but thankfully not!

Q1. I was aware of a range of uniform but not of the Teflon stain resistance range.
Q2. Reasonable.
Q3. Rather basic and usually would look for more choice as regards style, fit and comfort.
Q4. Yes I would as long as the ranges were available online and would be more inclined to do so if the range were expanded.
Q5. Yes I would from the point of view of price and washability as the range represents good value for money. However I would point out the limitations of the range.

I have previously bought uniform from Matalan but was unaware of the Teflon range.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?

I liked the weight of the fabric and the stay pressed pleats. The range was much heavier and better quality than pieces usually are in this specific price range of uniform available from various suppliers.

Q3. How did the Matalan item of school uniform your child tested compare to the school uniform items you typically purchase? Please refer to fit, style, and comfort in your answer.

The item I bought was the girls's shorts, these are typical of the type of uniform I normally buy for my DD but heavier and better quality for the price. The fit was good as the waistband is adjustable and the length was good as she is skinny and tall and I prefer some length to what she is wearing. The style and comfort are great for an active DD who spends most of her playtime upside down and doing cartwheels. The shorts looked good on and were not a crumpled mess by the time she finished school. It washed well and the pleats stayed in.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?

I noticed a really nice skirt in the range, which was a great length too so will be purchasing that when I can get the size. It would be great if the range was extended to dresses, shirts and longer length trousers as these are the items most at risk from stains in my experience.

I will be recommending the uniform to other parents as the range is extremely well priced for the performance it provides and it is quite an extensive range even catering for tall children.

I was as i've bought uniform from them online before - quite a while ago now but i think it wasn't the teflon range as i wasn't aware of that.

I thought it was great - we went for the grey pinafore dress with the cross back. My daughter loves it and the quality and feel are great. I was pretty impressed actually.

I would say that the quality is up there with the best, the style and comfort too but the fit isn't great for my daughter. She is almost 6 and i bought size 6 but it comes up pretty big on her. She's on the smaller size and the length, although a bit longer than i'd usually like, is fine. It's the width - i honestly don't think a 6 year old can be that wide unless they really are quite overweight. It also has a stretch too so i'm not sure who the size is modelled on. (Just to caveat, my daughter is normal, not skinny or chubby. Just very normal for her age.)

I definately will now look more at them as an option for school uniform. I was pleasantly surprised my the whole store actually. I have been back and bought other things.. And have a matalan card now too. (To be fair they seemed reluctant to let me have the dress or leave the shop without a card.)

I wasn't particularly aware of the range of schoolwear, it's not a shop I would have put first in the list of places to go for school uniform to be honest, and I wasn't aware of the Teflon Stain resistant range either, before this trial.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
The overall impressions are very positive, my son has worn the trousers nearly daily (when I can get them washed/dried), they are still in one piece which is a feat and a half considering the beating my son gives most of his trousers, usually the knees are the first to scream for mercy but Matalan's trousers have held together well, they wash brilliantly and drip dry well and quickly. Impressed by the item. My only gripe would be getting them. The store I went to with my voucher didn't have a clue about the promotion and kept me standing half an hour literally at the till whilst her supervisor tried to guess how to give me the trousers with the voucher, at one point I was told I could only have the cheapest item available even though it clearly said on the voucher any item from the range. I wasn't very impressed with the service received. But once I was able to take the trousers it was all good and they have been a worthwhile wait!

Q3. How did the Matalan item of school uniform your child tested compare to the school uniform items you typically purchase? Please refer to fit, style, and comfort in your answer.
They fit really nicely, elasticated waist which normally my son has hook and eye with zip or button with zip, the hook and eye/button never make it, so I was glad for the pull up style, they fit brilliantly in the leg, not too short or too long, they were very comfortable (so he says!) and they have cleaned beautifully. The other trousers he has had from Next or supermarkets or Debenhams have not fit as well, too tight usually, or need a belt, and the fabric has been thin and torn quickly and stains have stayed, Matalan's fabric is nice and thick.

Oh very likely now I'm more aware of it. Good quality, decent enough price. Long lasting.

Yes I definitely would, I have been very pleased with the product for all the reasons mentioned above.

1. No I wasn't aware to stain resistant range. I had noticed school uniform but it seemed to be girl's dresses mainly in my local Matalan. I went to a bigger store to get DS the test trousers.

1. Not fit for purpose sadly. 7Y boy, trousers died on 2nd wear. 2 washes. He fell over on normal tarmac in the school playground. Not hard enough to mark his leg underneath but the fabric ripped...see picture. Otherwise, really lovely cut, fitted well, nice feel to them.

3.Better for style, fit and comfort than asda, tesco or marks and sparks. similar to Sainsbury's for fit and comfort and washability.

1. I would consider shorts or a jumper but the knees aren't strong enough for a year 2 boy!

1. No I wouldn't. I'd send them to Sainsbury's to get trousers with reinforced knees...

No I wasn aware, and didn't even think to look for school uniform there!

I thought the price was exceptional! We tested some boys school shorts. They retailed at £3.50! I thought this was a bargain compared to the £11 equivalent from John Lewis! The quality was just as good!

In terms of fit style and comfort I think they were equivalent to John Lewis (as I said above) the only difference is the fact that they do not have adjustable waist buttons. But for almost a third of the price I can accept that!

Going forward I will buy all school shorts from matalan. Trousers I won't, as my son is slender and long legged and looks better in a slim fit trouser that matalan don't offer (hence going for the shorts!)

I was very impressed I choose a pinafore for my daughter it was very stylish and pretty. my daughter is in reception and loves messy play she came out on the first day of wearing this covered in paint, and it came straight out in the wash I didn't even pretreat it!

It was prettier then some of her other pinafores it fitted just as well and she hasn't moaned about it being uncomfortable.

Yes but I wasn't aware of the Teflon stain resistant range.

My daughter and I both liked it as its a lovely style and it has pockets which was great.

It is looser than her normal pinafores which was good as it made it easier to get changed for gym as she normally refuses to wear a pinafore on gym days as she finds it too difficult.

I would definitely buy them if there was a shop closer to us but as it is, it's quite out of the way.

Yes I would, they had very sweet styles and it washed better than I thought it would.
