We've been asked by the team at Babylon Health to find Mumsnetters to download and review the Babylon Health app.

For this product test we are looking for Mumsnetters in the UK and Ireland, with a smartphone or tablet which is an Android or Apple device as the app is available on the iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPad or Google Play for Android devices.

Babylon Health say "We aim to make getting medical advice as quick and easy as possible - combining great mobile app technology with the best doctors to bring affordable healthcare to everyone, everywhere. It lets you see NHS approved doctors, face to face from your home or office, and get prescriptions sent to you or a pharmacy of your choice. You can text message doctors for speedy answers to the simple things, and get access to a range of other great features. We believe this is a fantastic service for parents as it’s all about accessing healthcare on your terms. With doctors and advice available at your fingertips, there is nothing stopping you getting expert advice for even the smallest health questions."

Selected testers would need to download the app and enter a code to receive a free one-month subscription (testers would not need to enter any payment details and subscriptions are usually £4.99 per month). Testers would then need to use the app for two weeks, and then post your feedback on a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the free trial, your subscription would end unless you choose to subscribe directly with Babylon.

During the two week period, you can use the service to talk through specific issues with a doctor, raise any health questions you can think of, get some advice, or just chat through the service. You could also check on your DP's or your DC's health issues

We'll also be asking you to add a review on the MN app review pages.

All MNers who take part and who add feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 Love2Shop voucher.

If you would like to take part please add your details here.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

I've signed up but from the website I have found this:

"Q. Does my membership cover my immediate family members?
A. No. Your membership only covers the person who's name is registered. Additional family members, including dependent children will be at an extra cost."

So I wondered if the free trial is just for us, or if our DC's are included too?

Hi Moodykat - testers would be able to use the trial code to test the app with their DCs/DP too. You would need to create a separate account for each person, and you would be able to enter the code for each.

"nhs approved doctors." given that the gp's signed up to respond through this app have the ability to refer you to

\link{http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-04/28/babylon-ali-parsa\bupa consultants}
this is surely a step towards making people pay for healthcare by stealth. I'd imagine that a referral to a bupa consultant won't be covered in one's £7.49 subscription? Hmm

Hi wannaBe - we passed your comment on to Babylon Health, and they have said:

"The babylon GPs act exactly like your GP, they aim to solve any problem they can there and then. If you do need to be physically seen or referred for any reason it will be entirely up to you how to go forward - either to your own GP, via the NHS or privately. At each consultation you will be asked if you would like to share the notes with your GP or not.

Our mission is simply to make healthcare more accessible for everyone by making it easier for you to get great medical advice when you need it. We do everything we can to keep our price as low as possible in order to achieve this and we are already working alongside the NHS to further improve this."

Signed up- you would not believe how hard it is to get appointments when both parents work and you have to get child from childcare!

The screenshots give me the impression the app is for the very small potential client group of "people who can operate a smartphone and are willing and able to pay a subscription fee for a premium medical service, but are somehow incapable of working out what to do if they graze their knee". Private healthcare membership benefit, presumably, like the GP advice lines many policies already offer.

Is this app useful for those in Scotland also - as healthcare is devolved?

Their blurb says they are registered with the CQC and approved by the NHS (both English bodies) - do they integrate with Scottish healthcare re prescriptions/GPs used etc?

Also, where do they get their doctors from is are they taking them away from the NHS?

Jumping in just to say I was so sceptical about this - I love my local GP and they are pretty good - but we signed up for the free trial when my eldest dd was complaining of a sore throat and I wasn't sure whether to send her to school ie it was just the beginning of a cold or strep throat - which she has had before and it starts like this but then gets really bad and a bit scary. (Sorry if not keeping her off school regardless makes me sound evil, but if we stayed home every time someone said they felt ill noone would ever get to school/work :)

Anyway we had an appointment in literally 10 mins, a lovely lady doc who asked me to shine torch from one phone down her throat while we held up camera on other phone - and basically did the whole exam on a camera at 08.10am. Said it wasn't a throat infection, didn't need antibiotics (but if it had she could have faxed a prescription to local chemist) but was pharyngitis (sp?) and would get worse before it got better. Not rocket science I know but just really useful info to be able to make a decision.

My kids are all now school age but I would have found this a godsend when I was home with two toddlers - the very thought of trekking to the docs, either for you or them ,even if you could get in, used to fill me with horror. It's never going to replace the NHS or GP for serious stuff but I thought for reassurance and convenience it was great, as well as getting early/ late access to a doc. And no I promise I don't work for them, but have just become quite evangelical since we used them - and my teenage dd thought I was very cool to know about a swanky new app so it was worth it for that!

I'll stop thread hogging now, but hope that was helpful for anyone considering the free trial.

I wonder how these GPs are insured. The out-of-hours indemnity (see post above, consultation at 8 a.m.), plus what's in effect private care, all for £4.99 a month can't be sustainable. How do they turn a profit? Is it per-private-referral? Curious how this can work. Telemedicine hasn't taken off and partly for very good reason.

If it's out of hours, where do prescriptions go and wouldn't you need to wait for opening time anyway?
