Dyson Cinetic™ review thread - The only vacuum that never loses suction is put to the MN test NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 19/02/2014 14:28

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been putting the Dyson Cinetic DC54 vacuum cleaner through its paces. During development, Dyson tested the machine for over 9,000 hours and now MNers are putting it to the test.

Here’s what Dyson say: “Dyson’s Cinetic DC54 is an exciting step forward for Dyson’s engineering team. Thanks to a clever new development in cyclone technology, it is the only vacuum which has no bags to buy, no filters to maintain, and won’t lose suction in its lifetime.

Many other vacuum cleaners rely on clogging vacuum cleaner bags or use inefficient cyclones which do a bad job of separating dust and dirt from the airflow. This means the filters end up doing the hard work and end up clogging, leading to a loss of suction.

The Dyson Cinetic DC54 is different. It uses 54 cyclones across two tiers, each with an oscillating tip.

Smaller cyclones generate higher centrifugal forces and capture smaller particles. But the tighter the cyclone, the more likely it is to block. So Dyson engineers have created cyclones with flexible tips at the end. So the dust doesn’t ever block. The cyclones are so efficient there is no need to wash the filter.”

Over the next couple of weeks, testers will be given a new weekly challenge to put the Dyson Cinetic DC54 through its paces!

Challenge 1: Speed
Dry mud, dog hair, post-breakfast crumbs – everyday mess quickly builds up. Busy lifestyles mean people are short on time and need a machine capable of speedy cleaning. It requires a machine engineered for tight turns and easy cleaning across multiple floor types.

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic DC54 when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

Dust and household nasties have a habit of hiding away in hard to reach places. Like the little bit of dust caught between the fridge and the washing machine; the loose change that lives down the back of the sofa; the crumbs caught behind the car seat; and the dust that sits on the skirting boards. We want to know where the messiest and dirtiest hidden spots of your home are.

Your challenge: After cleaning each room – and the car if you have one - let us know where the hidden dust lives and how you tackled it – which accessories did you use?

Challenge 3: How long does it last

It can be frustrating when a vacuum cleaner clogs and loses suction. Good technology should deliver constant performance and make life easier.

How does the Dyson Cinetic DC54 perform in your house? Does it suck up dust and dirt in the same way on day one as it does weeks, months and years later?

Your challenge: Pop back in to the thread and let us know how you’re getting on with your Dyson Cinetic DC54 over the next few months. Without the need to change vacuum bags or wash filters, is cleaning any easier or is it the same as before? Has the Dyson Cinetic DC54 delivered constant suction or not?

Below are some other questions we’d like you to answer but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic DC54?
  2. How did your Dyson Cinetic DC54 compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?
  3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic DC54 to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?
  4. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic DC54?

We’d love it if you could also post a review of your Dyson Cinetic DC54 on the Mumsnet review page.

If you have any before and after photos we’d love to see these too, so please post them on this thread.

Non-testers: Fancy owning your own Dyson Cinetic DC54? Dyson are currently running a competition with Mumsnet and giving away another Dyson Cinetic DC54. To enter the competition click here.

firstly, thank you!! I've never been so excited about cleaning in my life! it's speed-cleaning day tomorrow - so will post again.
the answers to some of the questions - first impression - well, impressive! nice compact design, quick and easy to assemble. astounding power. far more than anything I've ever had my hands on before, and puts my poor Henry to shame Blush (he's now officially in retirement) Also astounded at the amount of dust and bits that came off my only "moderately messy" lounge carpet. only possible downside at this stage appears that emptying the dust collecting container may need to be done quite frequently (even when I get over the novelty value of pinging the little door open). Tomorrow is the real test. It's half term so plentiful supply of crumbs, bits, mud etc to clean up... and the boys room with a brand new hard floor which hasn't been cleaned yet. The cinetic has an attachment for that!Grin

Hurrah, our thread is here!

Per PP, I shall start by thanking MN and Dyson for picking me!

1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?
I LOVED IT. I was super-excited when the courier arrived, and opened it all up straight away. I've never had a Dyson before, and was surprised at just how pretty it was! Blush. The box itself was beatifully engineered, the way the folds were made to protect all the bits and bobs... It jsut really added to the full effect. It came with just the right level of leaflets etc - and the 'how to' is pictorial and really easy to read.

2. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner? I have a Vax animal thing. The Dyson beats it hands-down. It is embarrassing how much much I'm picking up! I am pathetically pleased by this, and I am vacuuming everything insight - skirtings, door panelling, bookcases etc, as well as of course the floor. But it takes me ages, as I Have to keep on stopping to 'admire' all the crud that I have vacuumed up, and then attempt to show it to my family, who are a bit bored of the subject now, but still amused my my new housework obsession. I ahve even taken pictures! I wasn't sure if we'd need them for the feedback.

3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?
Hell yes. I have already raved about it to friends and family in RL, unprompted. It IS expensive however.

4. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?
Erm, have I mentioned that I love it?
It is very easy to empty (and I have emptied it A LOT). I love that suction has not yet waned, and that there is no dust smell as the much escapes the vacuum. I have noticed that there is much on the head and stick, so I then take this off and vacuum the vacuum, if that makes sense. I really do feel that I am picking up more muck than before, and that this can only be a good thing for mine and my family's health and wellbeing.

So far, it has coped perfectly with all the pet hair, and with my long hair. I have only pulled my long hair out from the turbo head thing - ie I have not yet needed to undo it and untangle, per the instructions. I am also loving the non-tanglging mini-turbo head.

I'm signing off now as I can honestly witter on all night about the Dyson! I shall do the speed challenge tomorrow, but as mentioned above in (2), I suspect I shall take a long time, as I am now hoovering bits of the house that I'd never normally bother with. It is def much quicker per sq m of floor than before (as well as more effective), as I don't need to go back and forth.

I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to test the new Dyson and I have a history of trashing them ( name change as I outed myself to clients) I have taken many back to Costco and submitted to a Mile and Sebo which are now pretty ancient and well abused.

It arrived the moment my housekeeper left the house on Friday. I decided to unpack and give it a go, remember, I had a very clean house after 6 hours. Photo will appear shortly.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

Purple and a lot of plastic, the on off switch seems very flimsy, I wonder how long before someone heavy handed snaps it?

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

Considering the house had been thoroughly cleaned, and HK is thorough, I had great pleasure in emptying the dust into a zip lock bag to show her. I found it to be very quiet, but a little unwieldy, maybe because I have to be careful with my shoulder, but I'll get used to that as being half term, it will be in use every day.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

It is incredibly expensive, so would need to use it for several months before `I could comment on whether it is value for money and it's durability

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

I love crevice tools ( sad) and as my new ( to me) car had to be valeted between the seats three times by Mercedes ( previous owner had 4 kids, 3 dogs and was a scatty doctor who never cleaned it once apparently!) before it met my standards, I'm pleased to see that with a brush, bits come out easily and cleanly.

Absolutely beside myself having something so exciting to test! Thank you

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

it really could not have arrived at a better time as we are selling our house. The courier turned up just before I was due to leave to go out for the night (and stay over night). In excitement I opened it all up but only really got to have a 2 minute go before I sadly had to leave it as we were due to go to my parents over night. I told my husband about being chosen as a tester he was very impressed and said it would be interesting to trial it but no one needed such an expensive hoover and we should sell it after. I decided to keep quiet until he had tried it. The next morning we had to rush home to do a last minute tidy up before our first prospective buyers came to see the house. I had left the house in what I thought was a very clean state using our present hoover. When we got home my husband left me in the car with the sleeping baby while he popped in to do the finishing touches including running the new hoover round. He came running out of to the car to tell me there is no way we are every getting rid of the new dyson it is fantastic. I don't think I have ever seen him so enthusiastic to hoover. I was also amazed on just a quick hoover round quite how much dust and dirt it had suck up after I had worked so hard cleaning the house. The run round took about 20 minutes to hoover the house top to bottom.
Well it all helped as we sold our house that day :-)

Below are some other questions we’d like you to answer but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

Incredible, the power is amazing and the amount it manages to suck up while being so easy to use is fantastic. It looks lovely too, I have fallen in love with it.

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

A million times better it got so much more dirt up even after I had just hoovered. It also managed to cope with our cats long hair which has an incredible ability to velcro itself to the carpet and furniture in lumps. The dyson coped with it with ease. I love the little animal tool which cleans the hair off our dining room chairs which the cat loves to sit on. It also sucked my hair up without clogging at all.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

yes and I have done. I have told everybody who will listen about how wonderful it is and how fantastically powerful it is making hoovering so easy.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

Thank you for picking me to trial it. It has made my life so much easier, the cat hair was driving me bonkers as it was everywhere to the point where we didn't know if we could cope with it anymore however this has made cleaning up a doodle.

Woohoo, found the thread!!
Thank you so much mumsnet and Dyson for letting me test this machine, am delighted!!

Challenge 1 - Speed:

I will get round to that one later, forgot to time myself when I vacuumed yesterday and won't get round to it again today.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

Love it. What a beast of a machine - it looks powerful and quite awe-inspiring!! We are used to a bumbling, smiling Henry, the Dyson is quite a contrast!!

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

Well, it did not fall over every few minutes for a start!! Far, far easier to manoeuvre, I love the handle and the twist action of both handle and attachment, it is almost possible to use one-handedly and that is simply fabulous!

It picked up more dirt first time round, I am sure. With Henry we would have to do the same piece of carpet several times, Donald (sorry, we have named the Dyson Donald) sucked up more dirt first time.
The children loved watching it whizz around the cylinder. My eldest was particularly taken with the stair attachment, according to him it looks like a little wonkey eyed alien. We made him test it and he was impressed!!

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

Based on the brief test I have conducted so far, and if money were no object, then YES, certainly!! But I am very aware that financially it may be a step too far for some of my friends / family / other mumsnetters. I don't think we ourselves would ever have committed so much money to a vacuum cleaner regardless of how glowing the recommendations are.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

We found it a bit noisy on our tiled kitchen floor. It seemed noisy compared to old Henry. This could be though because the Henry did not have the sucking actions of Donald Dyson. But it was noticeable noisier. It was not as noisy by the time we got round to doing the stairs and the carpet upstairs of our home. Unless we had got used to it by then? Will have another good listen to it when I hoover again tomorrow.
Tomorrow is hamster-cleaning-out day so we will see how well the Dyson copes with trails of sawdust. Am also planning on de-hairing the lining of the dog's coat - it is coated in dog hair and have previously tried to vacuum it off without success. Even sticky tape would not shift it. Watch this space!!

Thank you so much Dyson and Mumsnet - It's lovely to have been chosen to test a new vacuum, we are enjoying getting acquainted Smile

How long did it take to vacuum the house?

Well, dd and I were expecting visitors so it needed to be a very quick whizz round! After a quick check of the instructions, I set off. In all, it took about 25mins for a fast clean (not pulling out furniture etc) which is about the same as my old Dyson DC07. But I imagine once I know what I'm doing it will be speedier.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

It looks very space agey and modern. I found the instructions a bit confusing tbh, the pictorial instructions baffled me at first and the written instructions are in such a tiny faint font I got quite irritated! The Dyson was quite light but a bit unwieldy as I'm used to an upright.

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

It cleaned very well, took a bit of getting used to, but the cylinder was full in minutes (which suggests my old Dyson hasn't been picking up very well...) It picked up the long fine dog hair really well, but it was difficult to get it out of the cylinder as it had got trapped up round the top. I imagine this wouldn't happen with short dog hair... I did find I was tripping over the Dyson, getting tangled in the hose, as I'm used to an upright but I'm hoping I'll get used to it and this won't happen so much in the future.
I love that the lead is stored inside - I took great satisfaction in watching it disappear back inside when I pressed the wee button!

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have already told my friends and family how pretty it is, but THB it's a bit too ear;y for me to recommend it, I'm not completely used to it yet. It does seem pricey, but I love Dyson's service agreement, so I think you're probably paying for the follow on care...

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

I had a problem with it trying to suck up my kitchen lino! I know you can stop the suction but then it didn't get up all the bits... I imagine there is an answer to this, otherwise it'll have to stay upstairs where we only have carpet!

Looking forward to trying it on the car next!

Another poster who would first like to thank Mumsnet and Dyson for the opportunity to test this, it is well-timed as my old Dyson was dying quietly.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

It is very light, was expecting a much heavier box. It looks really good - like the shiny silver and the size of it. The postman was most impressed too!

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

Have been using a Dyson previously. It is heavier and noisier than this version although a similar cylinder one. For first impressions the Cinetic is much easier to manoeuvre - it follows me around corners much better. It is really powerful - about 1 minute into using it the first time I sucked up the dog rug which got wrapped around the brush motor thing!

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I've already talked about it to friends and family as I was so excited to get the chance to test it. However it is very expensive so I would be unlikely to tell people they should go out and buy one after only 1 week of trying it myself, not enough time to tell if it's a good buy for the money.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

Really like the way it is following me around the house as I used to get stuck and have to go find the old Dyson and direct it round corners. Not sure if I have lots of corners or am just inept! The Cinetic just keeps coming with me.
I don't like the size of the bin as I have to empty it often at the moment.
Also the tools don't fit very well on the hose, I prefer them on the machine as they keep getting in the way and are now shoved in the cupboard so I don't bring them with me to swap as I go.

Challenge 1 - Speed

The whole family was timing me with shouted updates of how long it was taking room by room! I don't think I ended up doing a very fair test because with the cheerleaders I was racing and I would never vacuum that quickly normally.

13 minutes 6 seconds is apparently my time. Although ever since the boys have been pointing out the bits I missed. It took 40 seconds from deciding to vacuum to actually getting the right attachment on and starting. I didn't do the stairs though as they are not too bad since I did the whole house when the Dyson first arrived. Nor did I do the bathroom as I left the hard floor tool downstairs and couldn't be bothered to go fetch it with the added 'that took you 45 seconds to go downstairs Mummy' comments.

Honestly I don't think it is the best cleaner for a speed clean, in an ideal world I would have a little handheld Dyson for under the table after a meal and use that for speed cleaning. This model is better for a proper clean where it sucks everything up and I get in all the corners. It is really properly powerful and despite using a Dyson previously I am getting a LOT of stuff in the drum.

MrsShrek3 · 20/02/2014 20:47

well, the speed test. DH so impressed that he took photos Grin (posting them when I get on the computer, can't do it from the app) in theory it was speedy, because the dyson is very easy to manoeuvre and gets easily under stuff and you don't have to go over anywhere twice (as I usually have to) However, similarly to Hazel, I took longer because I cleaned stuff I wouldn't normally do with a vacuum, like skirting boards, door frames and other random stuff Blush

The dust collector wouldn't empty properly this time - it would be better with a 180° hinge on its door. As it is, it opens quite a bit past 90° but it doesn't open far enough to get the bits out of the base and ends up catching some more dust out of the container instead. That said, it was raining and I declined going out to give it a really good shake in the dustbin, preferring to stay dry and empty it into the kitchen bin. so nowhere near all the dust and fluff was emptied out.
I still love it though, the good points far outweigh the emptying process clearly needing a "knack"... which presumably I haven't figured out yet.

Speed Test

I ended up doing the speed test as I collected dd from the stables at just gone 5pm. She had very very muddy boots on and had hay stuck in her hair and on her clothes. She promptly traipsed through the house and up the stairs, shedding mud and hay as she went.
So, I decided to give the whole house a quick once over.

I chased dd into the shower and set the timer on my mobile phone. I started upstairs with the carpeted areas, then did the stairs and then downstairs.
I did not move furniture except for pulling out the dining chairs to get under the dining table.
I did not do skirting boards, sofa cushions etc, that is a job for the weekend.
Our house is a modest size, a fairly standard 3 bed semi.
It took me 18 minutes (and several seconds but am not counting that as that would have included turning off Donald Dyson and walking to the mobile phone to check the timer and turn it off. I did not deduct the time it took to change attachments when switching from carpet to hard floor)

I think - although I never timed myself - that that is quicker than Henry. Henry was slow to move, heavy to pull behind me, would frequently get caught on doorframes, furniture and corners and would fall over a heck of a lot.

The cylinder was choc-a-block though. Impressed by how much Donald is picking up!! Found it fiddly to empty it but that is possibly due to the fact I am a bit cack-handed when it comes to these things.

So that was my speed test. Verdict - much faster and easier to use. Will make vacuuming less of a chore!
Tomorrow I want to tackle the dog's coat. (My own personal test)

Many thanks again for this fabulous opportunity!

Challenge 1: Speed

I managed to do the whole house - stairs, bathroom, downstairs loo, playroom, dining room, lounge, kitchen, porch, hall, landing and bedrooms in 35 minutes, which is definitely a LOT quicker than using my DC07. This was on tile, carpet, wood and lino.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

It looks beautiful. All silver, bar the occasional touch of red. I did think that the drum looked small. This has been proven to be true in that I've had to empty it twice - once after the challenge, even though I emptied it beforehand too (makes me think my DC07 was losing some serious suction!) I like the suspension in the multi surface tool - much easier on the wrist.

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

It is much lighter to use, far more manouverability, better tools and the suction massively exceeds the suction on my DC07 upright.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would, because it is brilliant - however it is also very expensive when compared to other domestic vacuums. As much as I love it, I'm not sure I love it more than double the cost of a standard Dyson.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

I've managed to tip it over, which isn't ideal. I've also got the cord wrapped around the body of the vacuum. The drum release button could be more obtrusive, I actually missed it as it blended in so well.

The biggest Hmm I've had with it though was using it on the stairs. It quite clearly states that it should not be placed above you when cleaning stairs in the instructions. Fine. Except the tube is solid and does not stretch, and it is not long enough to do a standard thirteen step flight of stairs from the bottom - so to be able to clean the stairs with this machine I had to put it on the landing, above where I was cleaning to reach the top five steps. My previous Dyson's have stretchy hoses which meant that I could clean the stairs top to bottom with the machine at the bottom of the stairs.

Report from housekeeper " It is awesome!" She says make sure to do all the tests as she wants to keep it. But " Oh my word" when told how much it costs!

She says, as I do, it is not easy to empty and a bit fiddly. It's a pain having to fetch and carry the tools all the time as they fit compactly on the Sebo and Miele. It struggles with lint, flecks of cotton, etc the bristles appear to be a bit short to catch threads easily, unlike a rotating bristle roller brush head.

The car test again later as it is the end of half term.

Still no idea how to add a photo!

So - my speed test. I did the house - so 4 bedrooms, halls, 2 receptions, kitchen, dining room plus bathrooms, before MIL came for the afternoon. I ignored the stairs. My caveats are (per above) that a) I have been vacuuming A LOT since I got the Dyson - both frequently, and things that I'd not normally bother with, hence it might not be as bad as my usual, and b) that I'm not normally very fats, but I am loving the Dyson so much that I am happily taking longer than usual. Sadly I had to refrain myself this time from stopping to look boast about quite how much much I had gathered.

I ignored the stairs as I had done them so very thoroughly before. I didn't do a 'moving the furniture' clean, just the floor areas, and concentrated on the muddy halls plus all the many areas where pets sit and shed hair. I was aided by 2 DC - one of whom had a stopwatch, the other caddied the attachments. Both shouted 'encouragement' at me... We took 22 mins, and I have no idea if this is quicker than usual! It was certainly much much much more effective - for eg the pet hair was sucked up on first pass, I don't need to 'scrub' at it.

I suspect that for a bit, I might not be much quicker, rather I will vacuum more often and so very much more effectively.

Re the emptying, I echo what MrsShrek says - that do to the hinge and the shape of the canister, it is a bit of a faff to get the last bit of dust out. It feels like you really want the canister to open up entirely (so 180 degrees), but it doesn't. The other slight 'niggle' is that relocating the canister back on the vacuum is a bit tricky. But it is probably just a knack that will come with practice.

Re manoeuvrability, it is SO much better than my Vax cylinder. The ball makes it move around very happily, on all floor surfaces.

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

This morning we had unexpected guests at short notice and I managed to hoover 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and stairs in less than 20 minutes - most of this was the stairs.

Below are some other questions we’d like you to answer but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

Very light and nippy, I love that I can whizz round with it and do both carpeted and uncarpeted floors. A friend commented that it looks like something out of a Sci-Fi film. I love all the different tools but it's a shame they don't clip on to the vacuum itself.
  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

I have a Bissell cat and dog which is an absolute beast - I can't comfortably carry it upstairs. The Dyson is comparable to the amount of hair it picks up but seems to pick up more dust, yet weighs less than half the weight. I do find the drum is a bit small on the dyson though, although I found it fairly easy to empty, it does need emptying frequently as it fills up so quickly.
  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would say it is a brilliant vacuum but the price is off putting - The Bissell cost less than a third of the cost of the Dyson and performs almost as well.
  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

I am very fond of it already and would like to say thank you very much for having the opportunity to try it out!

Firstly just wanted to say thank you so much mumsnet and Dyson for letting me test this machine, I feel so lucky to be chosen!

CHALLENGE 1: SPEED

We've had a mega busy, messy half term with decorating, room swapping and a birthday party here last night so the housework has been quite neglected right up until two hours before the party, whilst my husband rearranged all the mess everywhere I managed to vacuum the whole house, including stairs in around half an hour and It really looked like a thorough job had been done.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

I love it! I was so excited watching out for the delivery , and as we were pressed for time waited until the next day so we could set it all up properly. I've never had a Dyson before but ALWAYS wanted one, and my initial thought was WOW. It looks very high tech and modern and all the gadgets that come with it seem great.

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

Amazingly well. I've never had an expensive vacuum cleaner before and seem to need to replace one each year but now can see the difference if you spend more. The main thing I noticed afterwards was the stair carpet - I love the way it looks nice and clean and fluffed up after its been vacuumed but the effect only ever lasts the initial time until its been walked on once or twice ( which if I'm lucky is 10 mins max) but despite lots of feet up and down still looks great. I also found it really easy to manoeuvre around, no tipping over or keep getting stuck around bits of furniture - it seemed to just glide around with me.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have told everyone how fantastic it was and how much I love it but it is really expensive and while I can now definitely see why you'd splash out on a Dyson I don't think I would ever be able to justify splashing out that much cash on the highest end model ( although if I won the lottery , for sure!)

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

That I'm really impressed, it seems to 'smell' cleaner as I'm vacuuming as if all the dust isn't flying around driving me crazy making my nose feel stuffy. The spinny bit on the bottom (cant think of a proper name for it) seems to be spinning crazy fast so I'm not going to be pretending to sucking the kids up with it as usual - but there's always the hose I guess!!

Apologies late to the party here..... :-)

Thank you so much for picking us for this challenge. We are a bit slack with cleaning duties around here and our former vacuum cleaner (an upright one) didn't really clean effectively so we were well up for the Dyson Cinetic product trial.

Challenge 1: Speed

Half-an-hour from top to bottom and that's with cobwebbing duties thrown in for good measure! Superb. DD thought it a particularly fun activity putting the stopwatch on me hoovering :-)

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

Sleek, smart, light and easily portable (DD managed to carry it downstairs on her own and she's a lightweight 8 year old!). Highly manoevrable too which has to be it's biggest plus!

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

There is no comparison at all.The Dyson wins on every count.

Old vacuum cleaner upright, cluncky, difficult to carry upstairs, didn't effectively get into the nooks and crannies even with the relevant attachments. Had to turn it off to change from carpet to lino/wood flooring function.

Dyson a lot quieter, easily more manoevrable, very versatile (with much better designed adapter-heads), super-efficient in the difficult-to-access areas, brilliant for clearing away ceiling-hanging cobwebs......, like the handle - grip excellent so easy to use with only one arm rather than having to apply real pressure with both!

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I assuredly would although I'm not generally one for having conversations about household appliances, unless it's with my Mutha! Although having said that, it's a fantastic miracle of British engineering so worth singing its praise on all sorts of levels, aside from its domestic god(dess) functions :-)

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

Early days yet..... The DCs have been very keen to try it out which can only be a very good thing! No excuses for dusty, dirty carpets in their bedrooms then :-)

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

** It took me about 20 minutes to go from top to bottom. I did find that the canister that collects the hooverings has a really limited capacity so I had to empty it part way through. I hovered the dog beds which always pulls out a lot of hair.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

** Wow... how much shiny plastic! It really is rather a lot of plastic. Does it need that much?
It was light to lift out the box and easy to put together on its arrival.
DS thought it was amazing and has named it 'Big World' from the film Robots!
It is quite noisy and loud. The attachments on the hose are irritating.
I like the crevice tool with the slidey bristle feature, I hope to use that a lot on skirting etc.

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

I have a Sebo D2 that I've had for 3yrs. I think aesthetically I prefer my D2. The dyson feels quite cheap and brittle in comparison. The sebo is 'solid'. I was looking to try bagless again but having already emptied the dyson canister countless times I'm not immediately convinced about the difference.
The canister is also terribly designed by Dyson. When I eventually found the button to open the end, the 'door' opens downward to all the bits go into it as they are tipped out. There isn't a proper handle either to hold while you empty it so it's a two handed shake whilst trying to hold up the bin lid and rake it out with my hands because the filter fills the cylinder so the hair and dust gets wedged in!
It's also a bit tricky to get the canister back into the machine. All in all the waste collection/emptying is a faff.
It brought the carpets up nice, they looked brushed and the spinny brush did good on the stairs.
I got a lot of fluff up, mainly cat hair! I'm not sure if this is because it's better on carpet than the Sebo or if in reality, the hoover actually has to go over the carpet to pick up hair and thought alone doesn't do the job! I never get round to hoovering upstairs and the carpets get neglected.
I'm also disappointed you can't vary the suction power. I like to hoover the door mats without taking them down the hall attached to the hoover and for 'dusting' and upholstery.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'm not sure yet. I think if i'd paid the extortionate RRP I'd be disappointed in comparison to my £300 sebo.

Firstly, thankyou very much mumsnet and Dyson for picking me, was stupidly excited when I had the email!

My overall impression of the Dyson is very good, it looks really space age, is really light, incredibly manoeuvreable on its ball and very very powerful. Basically it's the most fun I've ever had using a household appliance!

The cinetic makes my other cleaners look like rubbish! It is so much more powerful, picking up literally everything in its path! I have a ridiculous amount of hairy dogs and struggle with cleaners, as they just can't cope with the hair, mud and general debris. I thought my Dyson dc 07 and miele cylinder were doing an ok job but this is picking up so much more and looking much cleaner. The only downside to picking up sop much is the small cylinder size which needs emptying frequently,I am still needing to empty it several times per cleaning session. This is a small price tip pay though for such great performance.

I would absolutely recommend this cleaner to anyone and have already been extolling it's virtues to everyone I meet!! It is however prohibitively expensive and I would guess not within budget for many of us.

Anything else? Yes, I have had the same problem emptying it as others have mentioned, the lid/flap doesn't fall away at a sharp enough angle, and so needs to be up ended to clear it.
I have found the brushbar on the carpet attachment brilliant as it cleans everything, I have found I can do the whole house with it without having to change to the hard floor tool, which I find a pain to do!

Today I did the speed test. My house gets filthy on a daily basis and covered with mud thanks to the lovely weather! Factor in 3 kids and 5 dogs and you get the picture... I have an older 3 beef house and a combination of wood floors, carpet and tiles. I managed top clean top to bottom in Leeds than half an hour, thanks to the whizzy head I got under the majority of furniture too.
This is much quicker than usual,I am seriously impressed.

I really love the Dyson!
