Hi Wombles, there wont be a thread for this product test, I'll send you a link to a private feedback form on Friday.

Great, I was wondering about that! My kids have been having a great time with this. They have even been calling me from the top of the house! Not sure that was what the company had in mind though...

Mine too, although I thought from a consumer point of view that the actual product was pointless - the target age was too young IMO for it to be of any use. I'm a comms engineer so if anyone is thinking of getting one I can give you my truthful technical opinion via a PM but it looks as if the company don't want it discussed on the usual open thread scenario.

Is anyone keeping theirs? We are just discussing it now. The plans are expensive

I was thinking of but it's ridiculously expensive for a 5 year old who has no friends to call (because we only have 4 numbers on it) and his friends won't be calling him (because he's 5!!). Plus the reception is rubbish.

I briefly considered sticking a tenner's worth of credit on it for the novelty as DS really liked it, but it expires after 60 days so its just not worth it. The signal is terrible because the line seems to be compressed (so that the company can push more calls down the available bandwidth).

It was a great success for us.

DS (6) loved the novelty of it; I liked sending him away for two nights knowing he had a way to contact us that was in his control.

Reception was fine and I liked the restriction on available contacts.

We were really disappointed with the payment plans too. PAYG that expires? On a phone that's designed to be used rarely or in emergencies? We're reluctantly sending it back because of this.

No, I wont be keeping ours, its ridiculously expensive for as others have said emergency calls, I really think if I wanted that I would just buy a cheap pay as you go tbh. DS loved the novelty of it, but he soon got over it and left it, which would then gather dust Grin. Nice idea but far far to expensive.

bit late on this but I didn't keep ours for the reasons above about the tariff. would of been happy to keep it if there wasn't a expiry on the top up and my DS wouldn't of used it enough to pay a monthly contract. Sort of defeats the point IMO. im just going to buy him a cheap mobile (no internet) and stick £10 credit on it and tbh I think he would benefit from being able to text eg to let me know hes on his way home from school.

The phone didn't always connect either wasn't sure if its just our area or an overall problem.

But I did feel a lot more at ease when he had the phone with him.

We also had the trial phone and my DD was impressed at first. She loved choosing the design, however we did think it looked too much like a 'toy' (are we the only ones?)

I have completed the feedback form and we are not keeping it either. Such a shame that the credit expires on these, perhaps the company need a rethink on their price plans ....

I agree aristocat they did look very toy like, but the only plus side we saw to that was it wouldn't be likely to of got stolen. But as my DS is 9yrs old (although not an over fashion conscious 9yr old) I think he would of preferred a more 'mobile' looking phone.

MirandaWest · 14/06/2013 14:59

I agree that the way the phones looked was more suitable for younger children but I wouldn't be likely to give a younger child a phone. DS is 9 and liked the idea of it but when he does have a phone it will be an ordinary one as he will be capable of finding a number himself, and also texting will be an important thing.

I could see them being more useful for older people possibly.

aristocat · 14/06/2013 18:01

Yes, I thought older people might like them too Miranda. My DD is also 9 and the trial proved that she had no-one to call except family and therefore does not need a phone (as much as she thought she did) Grin

whatkungfuthat · 14/06/2013 19:19

I think elderly people might get confused as ours had no ring tone, so you didn't know if the call was going to be successful. It had about a 50% connection rate.

Anyone else get the late evening call from the company asking if you were going to keep it?

whatkungfuthat · 14/06/2013 19:19

Dial tone not ring tone

I must send mine back (keep forgetting Blush)

Yes I got the phone call during work. Shock And then when I thought I was giving constructive feedback, it was mostly taken in a defensive manner. Including when I said that all my friends thought that older grandparents might like it and she said 'yes well we've been doing it for many years now...' (Well how the heck would I have known that??).

aristocat · 14/06/2013 20:56

No phone call here - is that because I have already returned it? TBH we had trouble turning it off so kept using the shut-down button on the back.
