NOW CLOSED: Get the family cooking for the Mum in the household this Mother's Day with Birds Eye: testers needed

We've been asked by the team at Birds Eye to find 20 families to take part in the "Birds Eye Teatime Handover" in the run up to Mother's Day.
Birds Eye say "In the run up to Mum's special day on Sunday 10th March, families across Great Britain are being encouraged to give mothers an evening off, put their aprons on and come together in the kitchen to make their favourite teatime meal"

Obviously most (but not all) MNers are mums themselves so - if you are a mum - we're asking you on this occasion to apply to take part for your family. All dadsnetters very welcome to apply to take part too!

So if you'd like to get involved please read on - we're looking for families who are in the UK and have at least one child in the family.

If you're selected to take part you'll be sent £15 worth of Birds Eye and supermarket vouchers to buy product and ingredients. You can choose which supermarket you'd like to use. Please note the feedback thread will be live from around 4th March so please only apply if you're around in the week leading up to Mother's Day to add your comments (this is a fast turnaround project!).

Then we'd like the family (not mums!) to come up with a teatime family meal or 2 - there are loads of ideas on the Birds Eye Facebook page or on their website

Maybe the family could....

Make their own tartare sauce to go with Fish Fingers

Try a homemade tomato dip with some chicken

Try something different with a Bird Eye product (Chicken Dipper Fajitas anyone?!) or even a Tuna Melt Voffletopper

What we'd want you to do is have some fun with the Birds Eye range - get your family to think 'outside the box' and give you a culinary surprise in the days leading up to Mother's Day - the meal doesn't have to be served on the day if you are being whisked off for a meal out

In return we'd need you to add feedback on a thread on Mumsnet. You can also add your own recipes featuring Birds Eye products to the MN recipe pages or to the Birds Eye Facebook page. We'd also want to see some photos of the creations to the thread or via email. These photos may well be used on the Birds Eye facebook pages but won't be linked to your MN name.

Everyone who takes part will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £100 John Lewis voucher. There'll be an additional £50 voucher up for grabs for any MNer who adds a comment to the feedback thread so keep an eye out for it.

I'm usually up for all of these things, but being presented with a Tuna Melt Voffletopper (?!?) would make me silently weep, even if it was my lovely little children that had kindly heated it up for me.

I'll happily settle for burnt toast and cold tea in bed on Mother's Day.

I think I'll stick with fish finger sandwiches. And make them myself, the way i like them. It's the only Birds eye I have in my freezer. Could we have vouchers for M&S for their Mother's day meal deal? :o

Apart from the provenance of the meat, chicken dippers are vile. They manage to taste less like chicken than Quorn nuggets do. (that's not envy, that's me turning green)

Erm .... I admit, this came up in 'Active Threads' and I am not a mum.

But does it occur to you it's fucking patronizing and rude to assume 'mum' gets one 'day off' per year and otherwise does all the cooking? What are we, 1953?

I think I'll stick with a bunch of daffs for mine actually.

Anyway, my favourite meal doesn't come in a box (horse or otherwise.) I'd be rather depressed if my children thought a ready meal, even with home made sauce, counted as a treat.

I dont know seems like a nice idea to me even with my feminist principles. As much as I'd love my DC's to cook some cordon bleu feast I expect fish/fingers is more in their range. Plus they would be chuffed to bits.
We still have Freezer Friday in our house - do you remember that thread from years ago well I have stuck with it, love it
So freezer friday can just move to freezer Sunday. Think I would prefer my DC's cooking than going to some restaurant.

What LRD said, really. The whole premise for the test is enough to make my feminist side punch a Bird in its Eye.

I mean a) I don't do all of the cooking. DH and I pretty much split it evenly, so the suggestion that I only get one day off is very irksome, and b) Apart from frozen veggies, Birds Eye foods are what we feed the kids when we can't be arsed to cook.

I too will be happy with a bunch of daffodils.

That Facebook page is funny! A heady mix of people making horse jokes, other people posting pics of battered fish that looks like slugs, pics of penguins carved out of aubergines and photos of helicopters. No recipes though....

Thanks to everyone who has applied so far

The project is simply trying to get into the spirit of Mother's Day by getting family members to prepare a meal for everyone, by showcasing the range and giving folks some prompts to get a bit creative.

We (and Birds Eye) know all families are different - in some mum may cook most/ all days and in others not at all. And of course some families celebrate Mother's Day and others don't. No offence is meant

Could you explain how it could possibly not be offensive to suggest that families should 'give mothers an evening off'.

That doesn't sound terribly like thinking families are different and in some mums don't cook all the time to me. What am I missing?

Thankfully dh cooks most of the time and mostly from scratch.

I do think this is a poorly thought out campaign that (yet again) makes it seem acceptable for the majority of the domestic work/ drugery to be undertaken by 'mothers'- but that's ok we'll give you one day off a year and feed you shit something out of a packet.
