This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who are reviewing a Sharp Plasmacluster air purifier in their home. All reviewers have at least one child with asthma or dust allergies - this could be mild, moderate or severe. Reviewers will be adding feedback and thoughts over the next three months, in a diary style.

However if you are not a reviewer but are interested in this product please feel free to add comments or ask questions of Sharp or of the reviewers.

Please note: This feedback will only be used by Sharp to inform their development of the product, it will not be treated as a clinical trial.

Sharp have some specific areas they would like you to comment on - you won't be able to add comments/ views on all of these straight away as some are looking at the longer term issues so please do revisit the thread and update your responses over the period of the review.

Please state the age of your child(ren) with asthma / dust allergies as well as the severity of their condition.

Initially, please add your first impressions of the product when it arrived: for example: overall first impressions of the product, was it what you expected? Where have you placed it? How was it to get it set up/ started etc. If you have any queries about the product please either post them here and Sharp will aim to respond or email MNHQ.

Then once you have had the product in your home for awhile, please add your thoughts, comments or experiences regarding the following areas - and the possible effects the air purifier has had for yourself and your child(ren).

Affect on asthma / dust allergy generally
Any reduction in illnesses in the home or affects on winter colds you would normally expect to see
Any reduction in smells around the home
Any reduction or effect on dust in the home - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any reduction or effect on mould in and around the home (in troublesome areas such as Bathroom and Kitchen where ventilation might be an issue) - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any other comments?

All reviewers who add feedback here will receive a £50 high street gift voucher as a token of thanks for taking part.

Many thanks

MNHQ

Received my plasmacluster yesterday.
I have two children, 5 year old DS who has asthma and 9 month old DD.

First impressions, it's huge. Looks heavier than it actually is though.
Easy to set up, just filled water tank then plugged it in, voilà.
It is in DS room as he has coughing asthma which is horrific over the winter months, we have to take turns sitting up with him most nights as this is when it's worse.
He chokes and breath holds when he is having a bad night and really struggles to breathe.

We live in a flat and his room leads of the sitting room so I have it positioned at the doorway between the rooms.

Possibly a fluke but last night was first night with no coughing in 2 months so we shall see what tonight brings.

Just marking my place - I am plugging in tomorrow!

I received my 'contraption' (as dh calls it) yesterday.

Was fairly straight forward to set up, although I found filling the water container a bit messy as it is slightly too wide to hold with one hand, especially when full. Had to use the bath too as it would not fit in the sink. So it was all a bit messy and awkward.

It looks very sleek and shiny, although much bigger than I imagined - it is not particularly unobtrusive Grin

I'm not too sure where in the room it is best placed, so some guidance from Gemma (and in the instructions!) would be useful. Will it work well at the edge of the room or should it be as near to the bed as possible? Will the intake vent facing the wall (a couple of feet away from wall) will it still 'clean' the air all around the room?

Ds (9yrs) has allergies to dust mite and pollens (and mould, I think, although this not yet tested). Generally, his asthma is mild but this is easily exacerbated and becomes more severe, needing a regular inhaler at these times. His nose is often blocked and he sneezes and coughs most mornings - and at night when I've not cleaned his room thoroughly enough!

Dh also has asthma and uses inhalers throughout the day, so I may borrow the contraption from ds at some point and try it in our room.

Very sleek and modern looking, funky too.
LOw noise which is good, will fiddle with the lights later.
I have't gone for the water filling option as it says to change daily and I am a lazy arse.

DD says her room smells nicer. she did bath last night though

We have it plugged in and running in DD's room tonight. I did 2 of the 15 minute cycles to super boost her room this afternoon before bed, I did all our normal damp dusting and wipping this morning and didthe dustmite hoover and freeze too. Will leave it another week or so before freezing or damp dusting again.

DD1 is 2 and a bit has dustmite/mould/pollen allergies and slight asthma - she has a ovely Hmm dry barking cough and constantly runny eyes and nose. (I make her sound a real treat, don't I)

We have been playing with ours.
DS1 has the unit in his room - he has moderate asthma in the winter months in particular, dust and cat allergy. He has nosebleeds too during the night, so interested to see how this will affect him.

DS2 has asthma (and diabetes!).

DH has severe asthma, allergies and awful hayfever - although he says he doesn't

I have a diagnosed dust allergy, so I can say that I'm officially allergic to cleaning!

Very easy to set up, looks sleek and lovely, like the lights on the front - DS and I tried to set them off by dusting his bookcase.

DS instantly was very pleased and says that he can breathe more easily - he was on his xbox link telling all his friends about it. It is lovely to do something for him as his little brother is bristling with medical technology for his diabetes.

I annoyed ds1 by leaping into the room saying 'plasmacluster' in a film trailer style of voice (think superhero, but rather annoying!). I would like to know what plasmacluster actually is - it sounds very manly.

I am actually looking forwards to running this whilst I dust his room - I hope that my dust allergies (which have me scratching my face off) will not be triggered so quickly.

Am planning to put it into the spare bedroom and make dh sleep in there to see if his constant grunting throat clearing improves after a clean air sleep.

hahahaha my dd breathing on it made the bad smell thingy go amber LOL

We shook a cushion and the filter showed amber - very pleased that her room is pretty clean it would seem!

I am quite liking the idea of inviting one of ds' lovely friends over for a sleepoveer. A typical teen, lovely but somewhat 'ripe'. I hope the machine will make going in with their cocoa less life-threatening. (& as a scientific study I am interersted to see what colour it goes)

Well last night was quite good - one wake ups at 2 am demanding a drink which mean a) the humidity was better or b) she breathed through her nose and not her mouth, which in turn means less congestion - I hope this is it working.

DS 25 months old. Lots of coughing in the night and at times difficulty breathing between coughing fits. He is often wheezy at night.

Plugged the enormous gizmo in last night after he had gone to sleep (when we got it) and maybe it's just coincidence, but no coughing and his breathing was much more regular throughout the night.

The only complaint I have about it is that it is too big. We have very limited space and it is just not ideal. Something that same, but about a quarter of that size would be fantastic.

I also noticed that I was breathing more easily through the night. And the air didn't smell of dh's morning breath in the morning :)

Refilled the water thingy again this morning and had the same trouble with it I bet it was designed by men with large manly hands with access to big deep sinks who didn't think about us feeble women with small dainty hands with normal sinks!

Anyone else having trouble or is it only me with puny hands?

The room definitely feels clearer though and less sneezing in the morning, until ds walks into another room Grin

Daft - I filled mine using the bath taps.

I have just moved the unit in to the hall and shook out the rest of the duvets Blush it sent the odour and dust lights instantly to their highest setting. And I thought my weekly shaking out the window/on the line was good - all duvets going the the laundrette this weekend.

A quick question on how much electricity the unit costs to run? We already have a whacking bill every 1/4 year and wondered how much this would add to it as this would affect whether we decided to buy on after the trial.

Hmmmm we had a sore throat night last night (DD that is) - but then the blummin cat was in with her all night, maybe I need to turn up the fan once she's asleep?
It's hard, he rules the roost and we can't shut him out cos he claws carpets - think I will give it the 15 min boost later too

Dd4 has mild athsma and I have pet allergies (doesn't stop me having cat and dog!!) and dust allergies.

We have it in the front room at the moment but will move it to dd4's room if she gets a cold as thats when her night coughing starts.

Bigger than I thought but really easy to set up. We have ours on the purify and humidify mode with the fan on low.

Dh says he has slept better since its been on Hmm

Not sure if its made any difference to my allergies though.

Ds1 keeps turning it off though!!!!

I have tried measuring it with my electricity angel thing and on full blast it is 1p/ hour otherwise it doesn't register a charge at all.

Night 2 and ds is sleeping so well. He even resisted bedtime less Shock now that must be coincidence :)

I think it's actually the humidifier as we've not tried a humidifier before but run a fan every night for White noise (he's in our room as only 1 bedroom - until we sell, anyway!)
