To ask what the weirdest thing you experienced or saw at someone else's house when you were a child?

Inspired by a Reddit thread...there were some absolutely weird things that people experienced or saw at their mates' houses as children.

There was a man who said he hated eating at his friend's house because they weren't allowed to drink water with a meal.

There was someone who said their friend wasn't allowed in any other room but the kitchen and their bedroom.

That kind of thing! I'm thinking myself and can't really dredge much up. There was one friend who lived in a huge mansion...think National Trust style place...and it was empty!

Just room after room with less furniture in the place than in an average semi!

Normal-ish family...I think they were broke due to having 5 kids and privately educating them all!

As a 6year old playing with the local hairdressers son in the early 70's, I distinctly remember the whips & chains hung over his (single) Mums bed. I never twigged at the time obv, but later thought it odd they were so displayed & that she didn't turn a hair at us playing hide & seek in there.

I remember being about 13/14 and going to my friend’s house and he mum ordered her to wash the dishes and I offered to dry them. My friend declined my help and the mum went batshit. She started shouting at my friend that when someone offers you help then you take it.

I gingerly picked up the dish cloth and started drying in silence and left straight after. I didn’t go back. 😬

CS you've reminded me of someone! When I was about 11, I made a new friend in secondary school and she took me home for tea. Her Mum was v glam and there were all these soft porn style photos of her on all the walls!

Framed, big, 80s style glamour shots but nude! They just acted like it was normal.

Ooh good idea for a thread, I love weird people stories! I can't really think of anything that extreme, but I remember one friend I used to have in primary school made a game of knocking on her teenage brothers door and then running away before getting beaten up by him... Confused She'd cry and then a little later do it again!

I remember having a sleepover at a friends, we were really quite young, maybe 7, and witnessing a godawful row between the parents late at night. My parents never had cross words so I'd never seen anything like it. She was an only child so I think she really liked having me about and thinking about it now she must have felt so alone when she was sat on the top of the stairs listening to the screaming accusations night after night.

The parents of my best friend at primary school had a copy of the Radio Times on top of the TV and an exercise book and pencil. If there was something they wanted to watch they wrote it in the book and the TV would be switched on for that particular programme and off afterwards.
Her mum rang a bell for 'drinks' before dinner on a Saturday and we'd sit and drink a glass of fruit juice before the meal was served.

One of my friends had older parents who still kept the front room sofa all covered and only uncovered it all when someone significant was visiting!

I had a friend when I was in infant school and their spare room was just full of loose and random clothes piled up, floor to ceiling. You opened the door and they kind of fell at you.

Once stayed at the house of a friend who’s parents owned a pub. They were obviously downstairs working and left the 11 year old upstairs with huuge Doberman dogs. In the night I got up for a wee and found massive dog poo’s on the Lino In the bathroom. Told the friend who seemed completely unfazed and just said that was where the dogs pooped when her parents were working 😳

My friend's brother was picked on by her father in front of me when I was quite young maybe about 8 or 9 - sort of verbally torn apart about something he had said. I couldn't understand what I was seeing as it was so unlike anything that happened in my house I couldn't really process it. Might help if I tell you what happened. We were all watching tv and an advert came on with two little children talking. Friend's brother said 'how facetious' commenting on the children. I didn't know that word and I was impressed but obviously it was not the right word to use and his dad really went off at him about showing off with fancy language, who did he think he was, using the wrong word which showed how ignorant he was, shouldn't ever use a word if you don't know what it means, etc etc. It really went on for ages and I was really uncomfortable. In our house we loved different words and we would have chatted about the word 'facetious' for ages, maybe looked it up, used it as a joke for a while to describe things, but never ever would that telling off have happened. Looking back, I feel so upset for the boy and he must have only been about 11 at the time and he was reduced to a wreck by his dad by that, really upset and close to tears.

Visiting a friend whose parents had two single beds instead of a double. I remember wondering why they didn't sleep in one bed.
Also a friend who ate her cereal but left the milk and then her mum gave her a fresh glass of milk. Would never have been allowed in my home.

I was on holiday in Spain. I was about 6-7. Me and my friend went off to have a walk. Our parents told us not to go out the front of the area. We were naughty though and did. We came across this house. With massive walls but kinda down in the ground. So the top of the walls were ground level. If that makes sense. It looked deserted so we dropped down into the garden.

It was quite a smallish garden. But we came across human skulls and skeletons. It was at this point we decided to hot foot it out of there and run back to our parents. We thought it was all very funny.

It was only a few years ago that I remembered it and told my mother.

We were probably lucky that we weren’t seen!!

I remember going to a friends house for tea when I was about 5 and being served marrow stuffed with (Plain) tinned tomato and being forced fo eat every bite. I vomited after. We were much more of an egg, chips and beans type of house. I’d never seen food like it.

When I was wee about 25 years ago one friend's living room had stacks and stacks of newspapers. Her DF liked to keep them he needed to read every word on every page before he could throw it and start on the next one, he must of been at least a year behind on current events.

Went round to a friend's house. He said his flat mate was quite anti social and may not be in the living room or kitchen.

Looking for the loo, I opened the wrong door. His flat mate was sat in the dark, no music, tv, headphones or anything - just facing a blank wall. He was definitely alive because he nodded when I backed the hell out of there apologised.

One of my best friends throughout primary and high school had very odd parents. They seemed very suspicious of her having friends and I never once set foot in her house throughout the 14 years or so we were friends. When we were about 15ish, she had to have her appendix removed, so another friend and I decided to pop round with a magazine and some grapes for her. Seemed a nice, friendly thing to do. Her parents would only allow us as far as the front doorstep and we sat there chatting to her for over an hour before deciding it was a bit cold, so we left. We used to wonder what sinister things they were hiding in there! Looking back now and being a parent myself, I think it's even more bizarre that she was never allowed friends round and that they wouldn't let two kids inside who were being nice to their recently operated on daughter! And that they let said daughter sit out in the cold, rather than invite her friends in.

Aged 12 I was friends with a girl who's parents wouldnt allow anyone to go upstairs in their house "in case someone was getting changed". Apparently nobody was able to shut a door in that house. If I ever went round there and my friend went to get something from her bedroom, I wasnt allowed to go with her and would have to wait downstairs.

Being at a friend's and a woman with a black eye showing up to speak to her dad who after a few minutes stormed out of the house.

It was years later before I found out he was the local money lender and the woman was asking for a loan because her alcoholic husband spent all their money on booze.

Money lender dad had stormed off to have 'words' with him.
