Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

Please tell me you are not the one who thinks they are real...

Yes. Of course.
What kind of a daft question is that?
Of course they are real. I believe the tennis folk have real issues with them in the lead up to Wimbledon.

I think there was a BBC documentary about the phenomenon on around this time last year.

The Wombles are fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures created by author Elisabeth Beresford, originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968. They live in burrows, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways.

I have to keep my dog on a lead when I walk her on Wimbledon Common as she has a terrible habit of sniffing them out and chasing them.

I always misheard the lyrics when I was little.

I thought there was a comma between Wimbledon and (lower case) common, meaning there was a lot of them

How tall are they really? Like small bears, large moles, rabbits or badgers?

ButtonMoonPig · 13/05/2018 01:03

Absolutely a real species. They appeared on Top of the Pops a few years back. These days they prefer to lie low, out of the spotlight.

Yes they are real and they all sound like Bernard Cribbins when they speak but like Mike Batt when they sing.

Tyneteas I'm with you. Common are we.

Of course Wombles are real. They hide out with the haggis in the hills when they aren't at Wimbledon. They are decended from Highland Cows, that's why Uncle Bulgaria wore tartan.

Blush yes it's me. Yes drink taken but not that much. Thank fuck I namechanged before asking!!!

I genuinely thought that Wombles were real creatures that the Wombles were based on, like Beatrix potter and Mrs Tiggywinkle is a hedgehog

I will apologise to my friend. Thank you for clarifying

yes they a species in the family Mustelidae, which also includes the otters, polecats, badgers, weasels, and wolverines

Report
ohfortuna · 13/05/2018 01:26

similar to badgers in that they live in underground burrows, I believe that wombline tuberculosis has had an impact on numbers...think they may be endangered now?

WhippetyStourie · 13/05/2018 01:27

TyneTeas I also thought ( as a child) that wombles were common ( not posh).
