Place your bets now!

1.546kg chicken

2 Adults
1 Teen that eats like an adult.

I am going to try for:

Chicken Dinner
Chicken and Veg Pie
Sandwiches
Soup

Chicken and veg pie will have peas and carrots.
Sandwiches will be bits mixed with mayo and maybe sweetcorn to bulk.

Any other ideas?

Fried rice maybe if you have any wee scraps left.

Fuck me that's unbelievable! It'd be bones alone after the pie in our house, good luck with that..

Looking good. Remember to strip the bottom of the chicken and use that for the pie.

If you strip a chicken properly you get a fair amount of meat. Seperate the breasts into pieces rather than have a whole lump of breast each as it goes further and is just as filling.

I think you'll definitely get the dinner, the pie and the soup but the sandwiches too is pushing it.

Pot roast it to save all the juice and stock for soup, take the breast off first to keep for sarnies hide from teenager have some pearl barley in to bulk up soup if needed.

Seriously? 3 hungry adult appetites?
We have 5 people (2 adults, one near teen and 2 younger) in our house and a similar sized chicken does us one meal.
Occasionally dp may be able to make chicken and bacon Mayo for sandwiches but very rarely.
I'd be flabbergasted if you could make 4 different things out of one chicken!

Are you going to make stock? I have no idea how one makes stock, but I know it's a thing one can do with a chicken carcass.

Why would anyone want to do this Confused? I hate greasy stringy bits of left over chicken I buy 5kg of chicken breasts from the market for £20 every few weeks and separate them all into portions and freeze and just defrost a portion as I need it for whatever chicken based meal I, m cooking

'Why would anyone want to do this'

Because I'm at a loose end until my return on the 11th. No fear, if it doesn't go that far I'll feed them something else. Grin No teens were starved in the Mumsnetting of this chicken.

I won't be making stock as I'll be boiling the bones for the scraps and the stock will just be part of the soup.

Chicken bottoms are indeed filled with meat.

Can you grind chicken bones and use them for something?!

Report
Buttercup27 · 04/01/2016 09:12

Cook it in a slow cooker, makes great stock for risotto!

TheCarpenter · 04/01/2016 09:14

This is the soup recipe, which will be done in the slow cooker.

I've never cooked a whole chicken in there though.

I'll be boiling the bones but grinding them is a bit Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk....

I've bought those chicken breast packs from our market before for bbq.

Mine were so full of water the chopping board was swimming in it.
The meat was very smooth and unchicken like too.

Even on a bbq they tasted more like poached than grilled, not unpleasant though.

Mmmmm mumsnet chicken, the very best Wink

A medium chicken feeds myself and my teenage daughter for three very generous meals, and could do four quite comfortably if I bulked out with more veg.

You can probably get three good meals for adults, but with stock for soup I think you can just about get away with calling it four!

Ton Grin

I was just going to see how it went and hoping for some recipes for next time, but now I'm feeling challenged by what my niece calls 'haterz' and it's getting personal!

I would do pics, but you'd all judge my beef gravy with chicken dinners. Blush

Not as odd as gravy with fish ( chip shop fish) I imagine I love it makes the batter go all soggy.Grin

IvyWall · 04/01/2016 09:47

We usually get two meals. The roast, then something with the leftovers. If it's risotto, then the stock from the bones goes in that as well as the leftover chicken

Batter with gravy is the bollocks!

Is this what slow cooker chicken looks like? If so it's going in the oven.

I have cooked a full chicken in a slow cooker you don't need any fluid but it all falls too pieces and it is very greasy at the bottom of the slow cooker.

well, I really like a whole chicken as it is much tastier roasted whole that just buying chicken breasts! And the dark meat/legs on a chicken are really tasty.

I usually buy a super large chicken - so 2 kg or even a bit more.
we have 5 - 2 adults and a teen and 2 dds who hardly eat any meat.

We usually get 2 good meals, and soup from stock if I can be bothered. Not sure about the sandwiches though.

But hey, on mn chicken lasts a week, so you should be fine!

I hope it's organic.

Or at least free range. Smile
