Help us to protect children from sexual images in public

Child Eyes is campaigning hard to get sexual images out of children's sight. Porn in the form of lad's mags, The Sport, The Sun page three and more are bombarding our children's lives and parents are struggling. Mumsnet lads mags campaign was fab but not the heat is off it is worse than ever. We need the Government to step up legislation and MAKE retailers put children above profits.

Mumsnet support Child Eyes please!

I completely support the Child Eyes campaign and hope Mumsnet will too. It's terrible the way retailers and publishers are allowed to put sexualised images wherever they want to make maximum profit, in full view of children. The Sport is often displayed at toddlers eye line. No one is looking out for children, just thinking of the bottom line. We need to make a stand to protect children as research has proved these images can be damaging to young children. There's a place for this stuff and it's not at the eye line of a young child in its buggy.

As a mum of a young child, I'm fed up of magazine covers with topless women on or women bent over in a thong being displayed next to comics. I have begun complaining about this as and when I see it. But one voice isn't enough to stop this overwhelming tide of degrading images of women in supermarkets, garages and newsagents. We need a stronger voice. I'm so pleased that there is the Child Eyes campaign and really hope they can build up some momentum to persuade our shops to be more responsible with their displays.

Not about sexualisation, but I'd like weapons magazines, such as Guns and Ammo, out of children's view.

Childeyes is a brilliant campaign which Mumsnet should fully support. I don't want my daughter's being bombarded with sexualized images when they are out and the Government is obviously not going to do anything about it.

Popupworkshop - Good point, It would be great if ALL inappropriate material was more responsibly displayed in shops.

I absolutely support the Child Eyes petition. I find it acutely embarrassing and cringeworthy when going into shops, garages, etc and seeing images of women bent over showing their bare behinds, breasts, legs splayed in just tiny knickers in papers like the Sun, the Sport or Star. Often they are seen right along with the newspapers at child eye level. In fact I saw this only recently at the Co-op and complained. They did put it right, but probably not before countless children had already seen it. If it was made illegal then shops would really have to start thinking about how they place these papers which I feel should be classed as pornographic and put in modesty covers. I hope Mumsnet will support this really important and long overdue campaign.

Completely support child eyes. It would be a criminal offence to expose a child to porn in the home, so why is it acceptable in shops and supermarkets? Children should not be made to see sexualised images of women, which become part of their perception of the world about what is acceptable and unacceptable. Children exposed to these images grown up in a world where it is seemingly acceptable to see women exploited and valued for their bodies and sexuality alone. Children should be shielded from highly sexualised imagery especially when porn is already so easily accessible

What I would like is that these covers be hidden behind maybe a modesty cover. It wouldn't be that difficult for shops to do. But it would make a world of difference to our children.

Morrissons already do this. It's a very cheap, low tech solution and a complete no-brainer. All I ask is that the powers that be include 'The Sun', 'The Star' and especially 'The Sport' when they decide what is to be displayed behind modesty covers. The fact that they purport to be "newspapers" means that they get away with murder.

Mumsnet this is such worthwhile well-needed campaign. The government has left the displaying of sexualised images up to retailers to police themselves, this was two years ago! From the video you can see that retailers are not taking any note of the guidelines. As a result parents complain when they pop into shops to get a few groceries when their child's eye has been caught by Moshi Monsters displayed right next to the highly sexual image on The Sport. There is a time and a place. This culture of 'sex sells' is getting out of hand. The losers here are the children, and their parents. Parents are not treated receptively when they do have the courage to say something in shops. It is an outrage that it's been allowed to get this dreadful state. Change is well- overdue and desperately needed to protect Child Eyes.

I do think children need to be protected from the overtly sexualised images so clearly on view in the local shop. Modesty covers please!

really hope MN get behind this campaign - the video is utterly depressing. We should not have to expose our children to sexualised degrading images when popping to the post office or supermarket. i completely support childseyes.

Great video. Signed the petition and following on Facebook.

I am fed up of constantly pointing out to my local petrol station that Zoo and Nuts should not be on the lower shelves. They look basically like porn mags, and I don't want to have to look at them, let alone allow my children to see them. Porn, men's 'lifestyle' mags, The Sport, The Sun, should all be top shelf, or behind modesty wraps.

I think the problem is we see so much sexualised content that we are becoming immune to it. But look around, with fresh eyes, with child eyes (ah, that's where they got the name from!) and you realise it just isn't on. How is being surrounded by a sexual wallpaper going to affect our children? A few judges recently have cited internet porn as behind juvenile sex crimes. I know that's the extreme end of the scale, but...

Self-regulation is not working. Something needs to be done.

I completely agree that Mumsnet should be supporting the Child Eyes campaign.

It is time to revisit the 2010 Lads Mag campaign but this time include newspapers. I do not know why newspapers were not considered at the time, perhaps their content and covers have got worse(?) Certainly retailers need to refocus on what they actually signed up to in 2010 and consider what is seemingly long forgotten in 2013.

You'd think it was such basic common sense to not have pornography around children one wonders why this ever came to be or how it hasn't been tackled successfully before. I totally support the childeyes campaign and wish them the very best of luck with it.

The links don't work!

I was in primark yesterday and there was a sweatshirt with a girl in a very skimpy bikini in a porn pose on it at child height, the manager didn't see what I was complaining about when I asked for it to be moved. She just kept saying it's only boobs and do I object to breastfeeding. I actually had to explain to her the difference between feeding your child (i.e. completely natural and what boobs are for) and showing sexualised borderline porn images of women beside children's clothing.

100% support Childs Eyes campaign. Signed the petition and shared on Facebook.

My ds is only 5 months old but I hate to think one day he will see these disgusting images.

Essentially the media is teaching my son that women are sex objects to be ogled at.

Please support this MN!
