Did your twins share a cot?

If your twins did share a cot:

  1. how long were they able to share for?
  2. how did you position them?

Thank you in advance for your help .

They shared a crib when we were in hospital (5 days following c section).

But after that they were in separate moses baskets and then seperate cots

My dts are nearly 5 months old and still share a cot bed in my room. They lay side by side with their feet on the side rail. I'll probably seperate them in a couple of months when they go into their own room. They look so sweet at night time and don't disturb each other.

My girls (now 8) were in separate Moses baskets but then went into one cot. They shared a cot until nearly 2, I think, when we put them into beds (though they still ended up in the same bed and often still do). I had them with heads at opposite ends, but once able to move around they usually lay side by side. They were almost exactly the same size - if one had been a lot bigger I would have worried about her squashing the other.

My twins shared a cot until they were 3 months old. I separated them shortly after since they were starting to wake each other up.

Balamorybaby · 27/05/2009 07:50

Thanks ladies.

My 3month old B/G DT's are rapidly growing out of their moses baskets so was wondering whether I needed to set up one or two cots.

I think I'll start with just one and see how we go with that.

Thanks again.

mine were 35 weekers and tiny - 3lb 13 and 5lb 5. They shared a carry cot/pram top for a few weeks - side by side (they did look cute ). Then we moved them to a cot bed size cot - side by side across it. When they got too long for that they then went end to end for a while. Eventually they got a bit long for that and were kicking each other a bit so we moved them to a cot bed each. I can't remember when that was - probably between 6-9 months.

Generally speaking they didn't disturb each other - even if one was screaming its head off the other would sleep through it !

tryingtosleep · 27/05/2009 10:52

mine shared a cot til 5 months - they were side by side initially - then we put them kind of diagonally to try and make them last in there for as long as possible

they didn't really disturb each other

I have identical twin girls, now 4 1/2 months old. They were born at 34 + 5 and were tiny (4lb 4oz and 3lb 5oz) They have shared a cot since they were off their hot beds, first a travel cot in our room then a cot bed in their room. I have always put them side by side with feet against the side. They are getting too long for this now so last night we put them in their own cots. They settled fine but izzy woke at 3am (they have been sleeping through for about 3 weeks now) and couldn't be settled until we put her in with her sister. Any suggestions as to how we can separate the girls/ allow them to share as they get bigger. Their cots are side by side so they can see each other, but this isn't enough for izzy! Funnily enough rebecca is the noisier and more mobile and often ends up kicking izzy in her sleep!

It's all a blur... but they did share a cot, until they no longer fit! We did the diagonal thing too.

Would recommend cot divider - www.twinsthings.co.uk/sleeper.htm

They also shared a pram for a while - best "twin line" ever from an old woman, who looked in, jumped, turned around and said "Do you know you've got two in there?".

magnummum · 03/08/2009 13:09

Mine are 12 weeks and share a cot bed. Doing the diagonal thing at the moment. They don't disturb each other in terms of noise but don't like to touch each other!

MildredwithTwins · 04/08/2009 03:46

Thanks very much for this useful information. My 6-week old b/g twins are starting to get too big to be alongside each other on the short edge, and I'm wondering how to do them next.

TeaSleepFood · 04/08/2009 09:27

Hi there,
mine were side by side going widthways to begin with and then they went either end with their feet against the end of the cotbed and heads in the middle until they were about 6 months old and it turned into a complete bundle!

MerryMarigold · 27/08/2009 21:18

Mine shared a cot at my parents till about 5 months. I put them in grobags with their feet touching in the middle of the cot, otherwise they used to pull each other's hair. As soon as they started rolling and moving, they got their own cots as my ds2 was always pulling dd's hair! In our house, Ds2 slept in cot and I slept with dd in bed until 6 months when they went in their own room which could accomodate 2 cots. They slept much better once they were in 2 cots.

glamourbadger · 27/08/2009 22:03

My twins did till 5 months, at either foot. This worked well - only trouble was it would often take me a few seconds when stumbling around in the night to realise who was crying! I would recommend putting a different sheet under each of their heads - if one is sick you don't have to remake the whole cot and wake the one that's asleep.

After 5 months they started to wiggle around and I worried they would clang heads!

oooggs · 30/08/2009 20:57

yes they shared until 5 mths old - last pic on my profile shows them on their last night sharing and they were kind of diagonal!

Tortington · 30/08/2009 21:02

yes they did

head at each end

Peetle · 09/10/2009 11:59

Our DTs (identical girls) shared a cotbed (head to head, with a towel rolled up in a sheet separating them) from 6 months to something like 10 when they were getting too big. They're both fairly small (3lb3 & 4lb5, 35+5 birth) though.

Then they had their own cot beds in an L shape (room gave us no choice) and we finally put them in different rooms when they started climbing into each others cots, throwing teddies and waking each other up. That was something like 19 months (they're 27 months now). One tends to sleep more/better than the other, though it's not always the same one so splitting them up helps everyone, especially if one decides she isn't having an afternoon nap today (which is increasingly often).

We have tried taking the sides off the cots but after three nights of picking them off the floor at regular intervals the sides are back on for now.

Mine were in same crib in hospital (5 days) then in separate cots in own bedroom.

Rollmops · 13/10/2009 11:43

Mini Rollmpos twins shared a cotbed for 6 months. Side by side for the first 3 months and then diagonally, both feet in the center.
Worked a treat.

Almost never. They were together for their first night in hospital, but usually one was in my bed feeding anyway (!) then I felt they were too big to share comfortably - ditto when they got home so separate moses baskets. When I moved them to their big cots at 8 weeks they were together head to head, but one was so loud I didn't think the other should have to have her head next to her sister, so they went into their own pretty quickly!!

mumwithovertime · 21/02/2013 15:32

My b/g twins now 12 never shared,we even asked for 2 cribs in hospital ,they were 7lb 1oz and 6lb 9oz and looked squashed when the midwife wrapped them up like Cornish pasties and put them together. We already had 3 children one of whom was still in our cot when the twins were born so we had a Moses basket and carrycot in our room, never regretted our choice but that's it,it's a very personal choice .

TwelveLeggedWalk · 22/02/2013 10:47

Mine shared a bedside cot for the first 6 months, then a cot bed in their own room until DS started pulling up to stand, and falling backwards. They were weeny though!
