I have twins and have been working 2 days a week but it's too much and I can afford to live on my husband's income. I know I'm very lucky to be able to have the choice.

Twins are intense and on maternity leave my mother in law would look after them one afternoon a week and I could sort the house out, make sure their clothes were washed and ironed and just had maybe 5 minutes with a cup of tea to reflect.

But I just feel strange about leaving work. I thought I'd be happy but I feel quite sad. I want to work but I need the energy for my kids at the moment. I know this won't last long. When they go to nursery, I plan on returning to paid work.

Anyone been in this situation or just want to comment? Thanks

I was i your stuation a few years ago (ds1 + DTs).
Whether working or not twins are intense. The intensity is somehow worse if you are at home 100% .
For us nothing was working - unsupportive boss, childcare not working and I guess I had undiagnosed burnout. So I gave up work.
If I could go back I would have stuck work. Taken time off sick to get well. Paid for more help at home etc.
The Ts are 12 now and I'm still struggling to find my place as me in the world again. It's not easy to get back into work once you are out.
Think carefully if there is another option - get more help with anything you can.

My H also worked PT (80%). Is that an option for you?

I gave up work as I was made redundant when I tried to return from maternity leave and couldn't find anything that would be as flexible/ pay enough to cover childcare (I would have got vouchers towards it). Plus although we have PIL nearby, they weren't willing/ able to commit to any regular childcare or be back up in case we needed someone to collect or look after DC at short notice.

At the time I was glad I didn't have to go back but actually now I wish I had, it's knocked my confidence a lot and I currently can't imagine rejoining the world of work or anyone paying me to do anything vaguely responsible! My DTs are 3 and I'm looking at retraining options or perhaps some working from home now we've finally got some free childcare hours.

Could you go down to one day per week - just to keep your hand in at work and have a little bit of money - and still ask your MIL to have the DTs an extra afternoon for some 'me' time? I agree that DTs are intense and really being a SAHM has made it seem relentless!

I have 2.5 year old ID girls. I went back to work 2 days a week when they were 6 months. Financially I didn't HAVE to but I wanted/needed to. I needed a break and wanted to be able to have a hot lunch and a sit down :)

BUT if it wasn't for PIL's my my parents I wouldn't of been able to.

Maybe when you do decide to return to work - retrain in something else? x
