38 with planned EC. In retrospect I wish I'd held out longer, as even at that late date DS2 was still a tiny scrap of a thing with lacuna (the white fur that premies get) and loads of prem problems. But I was a whale that couldn't move and asked for the EC then. Now I think I'd hold out two more weeks and let them grow a bit more.

The EC was a dream. It really was. No pain at all. So peaceful and happy. I recommend it. So much could go wrong with multiples. But if you do have a Caesarean, beware your milk might not come down for a few days due to the spinal. I wasn't told that by anyone. and it took ages for my milk to kick in (about two weeks before it was normal, by which time they were already on mixed feeds. That's not so bad, as with multiples, mixed feeds mean DP and anyone else to hand can help with feeds, but ideally, you'd want good milk supply of your own from day 1.

Oh and forgot to say: congratulations! I had DCDA twin boys too. Without doubt the best thing that has ever happened to me. We are lucky - knackered but lucky!

Congratulations! Are these your first babies?

Initially it was planned for me to have a VBAC as Twin 1 was head down but they turned breech around 24 weeks. I was then set for an ELCS at 37+3.

Twins had other ideas though, my waters broke at 35+6 and baby boys were born less than 2.5 hours after that. It was a quick birth but a relatively straightforward one.

Babies weighed 5.13 and 5.14 and just had 3 nights in NICU. We all went home together.

My recovery from the CS was very straightforward.

Twins are great! Flowers

I should have said they were born by EMCS - Twin 1 was footling breech.

I had DCDA twin boys 2 months ago at 36+6. Both born vaginally on just gas and air, as they were head down. I was induced but only had my waters broken as I was 3cm when I got to the induction suite and didn't need the pessary, and didn't need the syntocinon drip. Labour was 8hrs, with 2hr active labour. Both boys and placentas delivered within 30mins, and I am (so far) successfully exclusively breastfeeding them both.

I was induced before 37 weeks due to DTS2's reduced movements, but was booked in for induction at 37 weeks anyway (& as I was 4cm when my waters were broken, I think I would have gone into labour naturally later that day or the next day at the latest).

Good luck! Smile

I had my DCDA twin girls at 30+5 weeks and spent 6 weeks in NICU. We brought them home on Friday!

I ended up having an EMCS having got to 9.5cm and failing to progress the last bit (and twin 1 being in quite a lot of distress).

I am 24 week with DCDA twin boys! On the Antenatal section there are a few of us expecting twins, it is nice to speak to others having a twin pregnancy!

Glad you started this thread possum, it is lovely to see just how far most twins get after hearing far too many horror stories of twins coming really really early. Wanting to get the cot up soon because I am so worried and bought my first box of nappies at the weekend too.

Congrats on everyone on here with your twins of all ages!

Dcda boys, emergency section at 4 weeks. They spent 2 weeks in scbu and now at 5 months you would never know they were born early. They come on so quickly.

My Gran and her sister both had twins. One lot were overdue and weighed 6lbs and 5lbs. The others both weighed over 7lbs. I wonder why twins always seem to be delivered early now?

Report
Mummyofonesofar · 17/12/2015 10:52

orange natural labour with twins that have two sacs and two placentas often comes early - over 50% come before 37 weeks I think. Then past 38 weeks the placentas can fail. And with ID twins who share a placenta they often come at around 34 weeks naturally but will be induced as the strain of two babies on one placenta mean that they are better off out as the placenta will fail earlier.

TheEagle · 17/12/2015 11:05

orange, your Gran and your sister were lucky because the reality was that a lot of multiple pregnancies didn't have good outcomes in the last.

Multiple pregnancies carry a lot more risks, most noticeably being the failure of one/both placenta(s).

They also carry a higher risk of pre-eclampsia and other factors for premature labour due to the added pressures on the body when carrying multiples.

Pregnancies were also dated differently in the past so it may be that your relations delivered around the old 37-38 week mark.

Nowadays we have a lot closer monitoring of twins to check for placenta function and to check that each twin is growing as they should. Sometimes the reality is that the babies will do better out of the womb than inside. Obviously this is only possible now that we have excellent NICU/SCBU care.
