Sleeping arrangements for newborn twins

I really need to start getting organised as i am 28 weeks. I just can't make up my mind whether to put both babies in one cot or each in a small crib.

The thing is, we have a great crib from when dd was a baby and it was so practical having her in our room at night and being able to move the crib to other rooms in the day.

If we would put them together in a cot they'd have to stay in their room for all sleeping times, which would be a bit of a pain at night. Also, dh is a bit paranoid and likes to check on babies while they sleep at night ( big fear of SIDS) so he always had dd on his side of bed when she was a baby.

So my question to you experienced mothers of twins is, is it better to keep them together or is it ok to separate them? They can still be near each other, just not physically in same crib as i guess that would be too small for 2...

Thanks for your help

Mine started out in the cot, sideways on, side by side. Then one at each end until they overlapped a bit too much, then separate cots, head to head.

I did not find that moving cribs up and down the stairs was practical with two. They slept in a pram during the day - we had a long one that lay flat, a side by side one that was nearly flat (in fact, we had several prams/pushchairs in the end Hmm ) Then they slept upstairs when they were about 1, and had definite afternoon naps.

I think for a while, one was in DS1's crib and one in his carrycot to begin with. As I said, a plethora of semi useful/useless sleeping/conveyancing stuff.

Both in the cot side by side. I found they slept better together and even with two moses baskets, i still put them together in one - i had no issue with them being separated it was just easier for me. (Other tips ... get different coloured bottles ... so you know whos been fed at night ... also put child A on the right so you know where to aim in the dark... after two weeks youll know whos crying!!) Good luck

Mine both big shared a Moses basket for 2 months then when it was getting tight, we put them next to each other in Moses baskets until 3 approx months when they out grew them, then cots in the same room. They seemed to like being together and settled much better than when apart (screamed the whole time in hospital until a nurse put them together on day 3, magic, why didn't anyone think of it earlier). When we moved to sleeping in own baskets we put hot water bottles in to warm the sheets up before putting them down. Sounds a bit daft and soft now, but they snuggled in.

I'm planning both sleeping together in one cot bed. I thought two in a Moses basket wasn't advised as they could overheat? Might not matter depending on room temp etc, not really looked into it.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Forgot to mention we live in a flat so no problem moving things around but only the crib as it's on wheels.
Can you really fit both babies in one moses basket? A moses basket is about the same as a crib but i would've thought it too small for 2 babies.

Everything will need to be bought in due course as we only have one of everything but it's just a question of what am i buying now to start...
Also dd still sleeps in her cot bed as it is a proper bed (she's 3) so we would need to either get her a new bed or get a new cot right now....don't know what to do and also don't want to upset dd and make her feel like the babies are taking everything from her ( already need to move the changing unit into the nursery and it has all her things in it...)

Im planning on sleeping the together in a cot/moses depending what they prefer! We got an ikea cot and one side comes off so DH is planning on making it level with our bed and attaching if to our bed, like a co-sleeper crib!! But I'm only 33weeks so just depends on how they feel most comfortable! Smile

I separated mine at night and for naps as I did not want them to end up being only able to sleep if they were together. During day I put them together but not to sleep. Once they start moving it wouldn't work anywa. I would advise against co sleepin for similar reasons. Everyone in their own bed is our rule!

We had one cot upstairs in our bedroom for night time and one cot downstairs for day time sleep. Mine shared until 7 months and still occasionally shared for naps until they were 2.9.

Mine slept on a cot in our room - it was a small one but they fit together in it until they were 5 months when we moved them into their own room.

Daytime naps and evenings were with us in the living room in their carrycots and when they outgrew them they slept in fully reclining little rockers we had fro fisher price. They didn't nap upstairs until they were about 1, but that's a whole other thread:)
