Weight gain in twin pregnancy.(39 Posts)
Hi all I'm 14+4 weeks pregnant with twins (my first pregnancy) I am very happy and excited but was just wondering about weight gain. I was a size 14/16 when I fell and still fit into most of my (stretchy) clothes, however, I have put on about 10lbs and look massive! I'm just wondering how much I should have put on and what others put on. I'm not seeing my midwife until next Friday (14th) and have my first consultant appointment on Monday (10th) but have no idea what will be discussed. I know I'm going to get big but am I starting off on the wrong foot? I lost just over 2 stone before I fell and was hoping to lose more but we conceived v quickly (one proper cycle after coming off the pill) I am trying to eat healthily but am having the odd treat.
Just after a little reassurance really.
Trying to remember... it's fourteen years ago now! I don't think I put much weight on until later in the pregnancy.
Dress size without your height isn't really very helpful when trying to work out what sort of size you are at the moment .
I doubt you're going to do yourself and your babies any harm between now and when you see the midwife, just keep eating sensibly.
I put on five stone, my babies were both just under 5lb and I lost 2 and a half stone when they were born.
I had terrible morning sickness pretty much the whole way through but it was especially bad in the first 18 weeks so I lost weight initially, I put on 35lbs in total and lost pretty much most of it 3 weeks after they were born. I got massive though (wasn't slim to start with, size 16) but most of it was water.
i got massive in the end - even maternity tops weren't hiding the bump!
i don't know how much i gained total but i lost four stone overnight when they were delivered - both boys were over seven pounds and there was loads of fluid, i practically skipped into the delivery theatre (elective c-sec) i was soooooo excited to loose the bump!
i wasn't even eating loads as i felt full up after a couple of mouthfuls (wish i could say the same now) i got back into pre pregnancy jeans fairly quickly (just didn't stay in them long sadly)
Oh didn't think about height - I'm 5'8"
I have only been sick 5 times in total! The only symptoms I've really had are extreme tiredness (dozing on desk at work!) and sore boobs (which has now pretty much gone, just left me a cup size bigger)
I think I'm feeling down about it today as I couldn't' find anything I wanted to wear to work ended up in yet another maxi dress (although the fact its a size 14 makes me feel a bit better about it)
Now the weather has cheered up I've planned lunchtime walks along the beach (live/work near Brighton) so that will help but guess I need to crack on with some more gentle exercise.
Avoided weighing myself but didn't put on loads and loads, can't have been too much fluid as babies were about 5 lb. I remember being quite worried about this when pregnant as I'm only 5 ft 1 and kept hearing how enormous I was going to get. I had bad reflux which put me off eating loads. Eating healthily (apart from cake) probably helped, and going swimming which I found great as no back pain and not short of breath when in the water. I think there's a lot of luck involved too I.e. people carry babies differently. Hope your pregnancy goes well.
I have been weighed weekly because I was at weight watchers and my leader said come for the weigh in until your membership runs out (this week so was my last weigh in) I have been trying to eat healthily but will admit I am not the most active of people, never have been god I sound lazy! This will be my next change, get active and stay active. Just been looking for maternity swimwear but its all so expensive.
I put on 3st, was slightly overweight to start with, (bmi 27) am 5' 3. Babies were just over 6lb each and was 2 st lighter a week after they were born. Am now lighter than i was (ebfing!).
I think I lost weight - only 5lb or so - in first trimester but was vv sick - puking on tube regularly! But weight went on fast after that and from 16 wks or so I looked pretty podgy with v ill defined bump.
My pre pregnancy BMI was 29 but by my 10 week booking app my midwife made it 31, but her scales also weighed me more than mine by 4lbs!
I put on 5stone,but don't forget a huge amount of the weight are the babies,placentas,fluid,blood etc which disappears as soon as they are born.
If you are anything like me all the fluid retention in arms legs face etc disappeared maybe 3/4 weeks after the birth.
Then just a gradual process to lose the weight,I didn't worry or stress,it took a while but I was in no physical state to do anything about it.
The weight has gone,not completely and my body shape has def changed but your body is going through a huge physical strain.
I didnt put on weight really until about 20 weeks,didn't show until 22 weeks,didn't wear mat clothes until about 24/26 weeks,then I went enormous!!!It seemed to come from nowhere,then I looked like I'd eaten a spacehopper.
I was actually 2lb less when they were delivered than when I conceived - I have no idea of what I weighed during but - and they turned up at 31 weeks so didnt have a chance to. At 31 weeks I looked about the same as a full term pregnancy.
I ate quite a lot of carbs in the beggining but it levelled out towards the end when I didn't have any room for food! I'm quite sure the reason I actually lost a little bit was no wine....
Carbs! I love them atm and am thinking this is the problem. On weight watchers I rarely ate bread and only had pasta and rice once a week, normally having new potatoes. But now I just love the bread and pasta - must cut down on it.
I put on 2st 5lbs, and after I delivered them at 34+6 and escaped hospital two weeks later, I weighed just 2lb more than I did pre-pregnancy. But I was overweight when I got pregnant (BMI of 28). My twins weighed 5lbs 7oz and 4lbs 13oz.
Despite being told by almost everyone in my life that I was "going to be massive", I put on less than 2st. IIRC, I put on quite a bit of that in the 1st trimester, then maybe about 1lb a week for the 2nd, then didn't put on anything after that. The babies were taking the food as fast as I was putting it in my body, they devoured me. Didn't weigh myself until a few weeks after the birth, and was then half a stone less than before I was pregnant.
Not sure if this reassures...I went from 11 stone up to 13 stone 5.
BUT, 11 days post section , my weight is back to 11 stone 7, with no particular diet adjustment yet, and mainly FF the twins (with a bit of breast milk that I can manage to express). I'm 37, so I guess many parts of my body had already headed south anyway, but overall I'm pleasantly surprised that I only appear to have 7 lbs to shift to get to my starting weight.
I BF for 13 months, and the weight fell off. When they were three months old and still EBF, I remember looking at myself after a shower and thinking 'Wow, just wow' - apart from a slightly soggy tum I'd never looked better naked in my life!
I put on 2 1/2 stone and was back in pre pregnancy clothes by 8 weeks after giving birth at 40 weeks. I was blessed with a pretty good pregnancy after the first trimester. I was swimming up until 38 weeks and did Pilates until 37 weeks and couldn't get off the floor!!
I ate healthily and found that BF really helped the weight fall off.
However having had an emergency c-section I have never regained my flat stomach
I know 16+6 and look at least 25 (if not more!) but have only put on about 10lbs. The midwife said this was ok.
Oh so have I gained too much? The midwife said it was fine. I didn't have much sickness (only 5 times) so no weight loss to begin with.
So at 5'8" with a BMI of 29 that makes you about 14ish stone pre-pregnancy?
This pregnancy weight gain estimator suggests 10lbs at this stage with twins is normal but at the top end of normal so as long as you don't start pigging out you should be fine.

Spot on Cavort I was 14 stone exactly.
Apart from birthday tomorrow I don't plan on pigging out. But thank you for the link made me feel better. I still look rather big though. Also getting a swimming membership this month to get some exercise in.
I've been ill so gaining weight has been a problem, but I've never gained that much anyway and all my dc have been small babies.
I think it just depends on the person's weight and situation.
Just done the chart thing you linked, and my weight is in the normal range. Phew haha.
