weaning onto indian food...how?

ok. When and how do I start giving ds chappati (roti) and lentil curry (daal) or vegetable curry (meat). Should I make it without the salt, masala and chilli's? ds is 6 months. Was thinking of waiting another month or two, before introducing indian food. At the moment on 3 small meals a day.

well I'm about to wean my two onto curried goat. I think that I'll start with a mild curry and gradually bring the spice up. I tend not to cook with salt (habit from weaning DS1 11 years ago). I think that you should introduce it slowly and see how DS likes it. Chappati and Roti should be fine. Which reminds me, I haven't made a roti for ages. (Am of Jamaican origin by the way) hth

9 months. I began weaning them when they were 6 months. It was sofiaames who told me that I shouldn't just wean them onto English food. She's right of course. I weaned the others onto what we were eating and I'm not really sure why I didn't with the twins.

I miss out the chilli but DS2 is becoming quite fond of the coriander and cumin. Also make stuff with low salt stock. He loves it - especially ones with lots of tomatoes in

i'll get MIl to keep some aside without the salt. I'll then blend it to a slight smooth and lumpy consistency. thanks for the advice.

I gave DD mild curries as soon as she started eating proper 'meals' (i.e. not just single purees) - probably about 6 or 7 months. You can give just about any spice except chilli, and do omit salt.

Crumbs, you're making my mouth water!

My kids ate what we ate from 6 months - whether that was fish pie, mushed up roast dinner, or curry with extra mashed potato to temper the strength.

I never really got the bland food thing - why shouldn't you use spices? (Apart from chilli I suppose) There never seemed to be any rhyme nor reason to what they spat out on a day to day basis anyway.. one day they'd stuff it down, a week later it'd be all the floor... (and stay there for days... )

There is some research that kids' tastebuds don't really kick in until later and that it's texture really they are liking or disliking. But my little one was happily scoffing olives at 1 year old. And she always loved the terrible curry they made at nursery... I could never make it just the same' ....

Go for it, you'll soon know about it if it has any ill effects or if ds dislikes it! If so, just wait a while and try again.

I have always cooked curries for dd, although i always keep them v mild cos thats the way i like them too.

start with the usual mashed steamed veg/meat/fish. a good 'curry' for a baby is a piece of meat or chicken, bone on boiled with one potato, onion, tomato and a clove of garlic. no salt. mash or puree depending on preference. and basically just give whatever you are eating.

i know people who wont give their 10 year old anything spicy! whereas i was giving my dd seekh kebabs at eight and a half months. (making sure not bits of green chilli in it) i dont particularly like very hot food, but the more finicky you are, the worse they will be.
good luck
