Want DD to learn my mother tongue

Dd (10) doesn’t speak my mother tongue. It’s completely my fault for not speaking it to her when she was younger. I’m told to speak to her in French and read to her but she looks at me blankly. We’ve tried French school but going back this morning was a disaster. I think she needs to learn French as a foreign language. Any tips as to which programme I can use? Thank you.

you could try signing her up to do a babble course online. also, turn her netflix language to french and then turn on english subtitles

Start small. Start with the shortest catchphrase (awesome! or similar), or nursery rhyme or song you can remember. Or pick 10 words and mix them in with the English, eg get your chausurres on its time to go to school. Would you like some lait to drink? So franglais basically!

I started teaching mine when they were 7. I started with a workbook for kids over the summer and after that they learned a lot by just hearing it. We then spend at least 5 weeks per year in my home country, which has made all the difference. By now (6 yrs on) they are fully conversational and speak with a very good accent. Their grammar is often incorrect though and they need to widen their vocab. Reading is still challenging for them.

By the way, I just spend the summer teaching my daughter an hour of French every day. She changed class and due to that languages. She can now understand simple conversations and say simple things. We got through the first "Expo" book. I think it is a good course and would recommend it. You can let her practice the vocab on Quizlet, there are tons of flashcard sets based on Expo.

Research has shown that you should not mix languages.

I think a group would be better motivation than online course.
