Having seen the movie of this book, I was wary of reading this as the film moved me so much.
It was well written and deserved the awards it has received. It is written from the point of view of a five year old boy struggling with his way of life completely being overturned and getting used to a new normal. He sees things in a different light to five year olds who have been brought up in a normal environment and struggles with boundaries but in some ways is more educated than other children of the same age.
4/5
I've read this one before, but it was just as good the second time. It's an incredibly moving story which made me tear up a few times. My heart went out to the boy and his mother, she did such an amazing job in extreme circumstances.
