Thanks for your book Dysgu I must say that it was not what I was expecting ..... although I liked it very much. The first half of the book was much more interesting than the second and I am constantly amazed how authors have such a talent for describing things. This author is definitely one of the best at this!

I'm just posting halfway through this book to say how much I'm enjoying it. It was one I'd always meant to read, but hadn't got round to it. I only started it a couple of days ago, but I'm taking every opportunity to sit under a blanket with the fire on and read a bit more.

OMG - I was blown away by this book. What a great ending to the year. I'd been talking to a friend last week, saying that I'd read loads but there was nothing with the "wow" factor, but this was it. I laughed, I cried, I feigned illness to get the day in bed to finish it....

I'd seen it in Waterstones, and the cover and the blurb weren't hugely appealing, and then when Lola sent it to me and it was so BIG, I really thought I'd struggle. However, it took me five days, reading at night and at every opportunity to finish it. What a great story. What great characters. What a tragic ending. What a storyteller.

I am bereft that it's finished. I loved it. My book of the year so far.

Dysgu - agree with the others, I loved this book! Like AP, I had always been put off by the cover (for some reason I assumed it was one of those 'Victorian man goes off to find a nutmeg' or somesuch.) I love a good family saga so this was perfect for me and it reminded me of some of my favourite reads - Garcia Marquez, Frantzen, the bloke what wrote Captain Corelli (before he went rubbish) and the Cutting for Stone book that I sent around last time. I don't think I could find anything wrong with it - loved the characters, the storylines, the writing.

Has anyone read his 2011 one, The Marriage Plot? Might have to buy it.
