Really wasn't sure about this one when I opened my parcel! The book uses an oral history style of writing which took me a little getting used to.

It is a very unusual futuristic story and the plot took off in a different direction in the last quarter of the book. It makes me want to read the beginning again to make better sense of it and see if the hints were there that maybe I missed.

I have to say although it is a book I would never have picked up in a million years I really enjoyed it, thanks Bumgrapes!

Ace - so glad you enjoyed it! Must admit I have been having second thoughts since I sent it, I thought everyone might hate it! I am a bit of a fan of the author but I know it's not to everyone's taste (especially as some bits can be quite explicit).

Will send on the next book this weekend!

I'm afraid I didn't warm to this at all, I couldn't make myself read past about page 10. I tried very hard but its just not my type of thing so I sent it on without finishing Blush.

I thought this was an ok book. Different. The style won't be to everyone's taste but that is the thing with the author, you either like him or you don't.

3 stars :o

Just finished the book last night, sat up to finish it in fact which is not something I've done for while. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have picked this up myself, so thanks bumgrapesofwrath for introducing me to something new.

I really enjoyed it, lots of ideas in there, and lots of black humour. Did take me a while to get started as it is pretty graphic up front which almost made me put it down, but glad I didn't. Agree with Cersei about the plot veering off in the last quarter, it did make me want to go back and reread. It made me think of Oryx & Crake by Atwood a little, some similar themes.

Agree with those who said this wasn't something they would have picked up! I had found it pretty hard going and really had to persevere to finish it. But I hate not finishing books.... I found the style quite uncomfortable to begin with although in the end I really liked the way that it kept the narrative going so intertwined from so many characters.

But I have to say the last quarter just made my head explode. In a kind of sick way. And given I was reading it before bed each night, I was too tired to really untangle it. Having considered it in daylight there are some plot holes in the theory which kind of undermine it for me. But it was interesting! I actually preferred the middle section once I'd understood the little sun/moon icons as a futuristic social commentary on the government of overcrowding in developed nations and sort of wished it had pursued that angle instead.

I am sorry but my brain could not cope with this - I found the style quite challenging and disjointed, although I think that is meant to be in keeping with the world he is describing.
I have heard of 'Fight Club' by the same author and someone in this thread described this CP novel as being reminiscent of 'Oryx & Crake' (which I loved) but this was too graphic to bear comparison.
Glad this book has crossed my path, which is why I love the Book Club, but this one did not work out for me.

im sorry but Im with Pascha on this one. I just couldnt read it..I really did try but the vile descriptions of the hurricane fence at the beginning just put me right off! I have never read anything like this before and am unlikely to in the future. I didnt think I was easily turned off but the graphic descriptions were just horrible and I couldnt see the point of being that gratuitous ..Sorry .Im afraid Ive sent it on without completing.

C.P. is an unusual writer. I have read other books of his and find they do take a certain amount of time to get into. However, I think the perseverance is key and often at the end I will be glad I bothered. I did not manage to finish this book as I was conscious they came late and I did not want to hold up the flow. I have ordered a copy for my kindle though and will finish it at my leisure.
