Miscarriage - how long will it take?

Hi, I found out last week that I'm having a missed miscarriage- booked in for surgery this Friday. This morning I have started to bleed, just brown blood not masses but it is definitely getting heavier. Will I still need the procedure on Friday do you think? How will I know if I need it or not? I would much rather not be in hospital at the moment so hoping this could maybe be over by Friday so I wouldn't have to. Any advice on what to maybe expect over the next few days appreciated although I am aware it probably happens differently for everybody. I just want to be as prepared as poss.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I had a MMC too but waited for the miscarriage to happen naturally. From a bit of bleeding starting to the main miscarriage day was about 5 days for me (I was 12 weeks along)

Thanks for your reply - sorry you have been through it too. 5 days would mean I wouldn't have the surgery which I would be happy about. I'm about 9 weeks but I know that it didn't grow past 5 weeks - only a small day empty sac was seen. I'm not sure if this means I won't have as heavy bleeding as if I was further along or not but I'm hoping so.

My mmc started at weeks ten with only a small amount of spotting for one day, then the following week, I started to spot again and it turned bleeding and it gradually got heavier where I knew it was a miscarage. So I'd say a week from the second instance of spotting. You will know it's done when you pass the sac and bleeding slows down. You will need a scan after to make sure everything has gone. Also there will be alot of blood and clots, regardless of stage. So have lots of sanitary towel and paracetamol on hand.

I’m sorry you are going through this.

I had a mmc at 12 weeks, pregnancy hadn’t progressed past 8+2. Mine started off with brown discharge for a few days then turned to blood, from then on it took about 2 days to start properly and within a few hours it was over and I knew I had passed the pregnancy. I was due to go into hospital but it happened beforehand. If you start bleeding heavily you can request to do it naturally and won’t have to go I to hospital, they will just scan you instead to make sure you have passed everything. I still had some tissue left and opted to wait it out and see if it passed, it did a week later so all in all took 5 weeks to miscarry the pregnancy & tissue and have my first normal period.

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Similar to posters above it was only a few days for me. I started spotting brown blood on the monday, this continued through Tuesday and then I woke up Wednesday morning about 5am with bad cramps. To be honest they were almost contraction like (in that they came in waves rather than the intensity of contractions!) for about an hour and a half, then I bled significantly for a few hours. I did go to hospital (I haemorrhaged after the birth of my daughter last year so we were worried at home bleeding) and they were able to remove the pregnancy remains, and the bleeding almost immediately slowed down. I then continued spotting for about a week before it finished.

Sending Flowers your way, it’s a horrible thing to go through and I’m sorry.

@bibbityboo2 I'm sorry for your loss. I had an etopic / pregnancy of unknown location at 6/7 weeks. I had a little spotting and they found a 'mass'inmy tube. I was offered mexothate - that's supposed to be a quick fix but I chose not to have it as it was as we went into lockdown and it lowers your immune system. I recommend asking for 48 hour blood tests - I had them for 2 weeks until they discharged me at 30 (again because of lockdown) It took 45 long days to get a period back but 3 cycles now on I've just got a bfp and am nervous as hell!! There must be a reason why your having surgery?!? Hugs! It's not nice x
