Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Successful pregnancy after 2 miscarriages?

Hey everyone, just looking for a bit of advice as well as a little hope!

In February just before my 12 week scan I started spotting, went to EPU where they found no heartbeat and said the baby stopped developing around 7 weeks. Had to spend a few days in hospital with not a very nice experience.

Beginning of May I found out I was pregnant again, absolutely over the moon and actually more confident this time as last time I kept hearing "most women go through it at some point" "it's just one of them things" so you almost assume it can't happen again. Then the weekend just gone (I will have been 5 weeks) I started bleeding on the Friday passing big clots all the way through to Sunday. Did a test on the Monday just to make sure and it was negative already. I'm absolutely devastated and now think it's going to keep happening over and over.

I have a 4 year old with a different father.
So my questions are did many people have 2 miscarriages and go on to have a healthy pregnancy? Could this be a mismatch between me and my partner and could it keep happening (as I've read a lot of miscarriages are due to baby's chromosomes and not developing properly)
Also read that getting pregnant before your next period can also increase chances as your body is already ready?
😔

Charpley, sorry for your losses. I had two miscarriages before a successful pregnancy so yes it's possible. It's unlikely it's a mismatch with partner. That's not necessarily how chromosomal issues happen.

As for getting pregnant soon after because body is more fertile, I have heard that but never seen scientific proof. It's also sometimes good to take time to emotionally heal.
Good luck

Hi charpley, sorry for your loss. I am in the same position, it sucks. Just had my second miscarriage, both discovered at 12weeks. Also had an ectopic pregnancy in between. I feel like a successful pregnancy is impossible and if I can't carry a child I just don't know what I'll do. We are trying again in the cycle following mc, I can't stop myself even if I wanted. I'd love to hear some stories of women with multiple losses who went on to conceive.

Thanks for both your replies. I've actually just got off the phone with the doctor and she said if it happens again she will refer me and asked several questions over the phone to see if she had any idea why it's happening. She advised I continue taking multi vitamins and folic acid while ttc.

I'm exactly the same, feel like I can't take a break from it cos I want it so bad. And if it's going to end sadly again I'd rather that happen sooner so I can start the process of being referred. Really got my fingers crossed for you too!

I’m sorry for everything that’s happened to you and hope that everything works out soon. In the meantime has your progesterone been tested? I found out mine was low and whilst I could get pregnant fairly easily early miscarriage was more common due to low progesterone. I just needed a cream to help!

@NameChange84 thank you. I haven't but I think I will ask about that, as I've also read that women who have suffered multiple miscarriages have then had a successful pregnancy when they took progesterone supplements within there first trimester. As you can tell I've spent a lot of time on google the last few days lol

Yes, I was lucky in that I discovered this information a long time before TTC but it seemed that the policy was generally just to let women have lots of miscarriages first before investigating which is traumatic and in the case of low progesterone totally avoidable with simple non invasive treatment.

Keep doing your research and fingers crossed for you Flowers

I'm so sorry for your losses. It is possible.
I lost my first at 12 weeks. It was a missed miscarriage and the baby stopped developing at 12+2. My second loss was at just over 4 weeks and I went on to have a healthy baby conceived the next cycle with no period in between. He is five months old now.
Good luck for when you are ready to try again.

Thanks @Beaglemum93 so sorry for your losses too, but to have a month old now that's such a lovely story! I think i am going to try straight away as although there's no scientific clear evidence, it's worth a try. I feel like emotionally I can get through it if the worst happens again.

Charley I feel the same, if this one is going to end badly too I may as well crack on and get it over with. Then I've had my 3 miscarriages and the NHS will maybe help.

I find reading stories of women who had a miscarriage and went on to a successful pregnancy really upsetting. That was supposed to happen to me. Instead I had an ectopic and then another miscarriage. I mean what are the chances! Supposedly reassuring statistics do nothing for me any more. Being open about it helps lots of women but personally I hate talking to people. Everyone has a miscarriage story up their sleeve and it's not the same.

I'm subclinical hypothyroid and started very low dose treatment while pregnant, I'm worried this contributed to my miscarriage. You can ask your GP to order blood tests for your thyroid.

@NameChange84 do you know if there is any downside to taking progesterone? Can you take it without diagnosis just in case?

Sorry to clarify I really appreciate hearing on MN from women with more than one loss and then a successful pregnancy. That sounded like I don't want to hear from anyone at all. Angry, me!?

@Doughnut100 I know what you mean, and it's a mix of emotions. I felt like that cos I thought well the first time was a one off as these things happen, so this time it must work. Also feel like I'm stuck in a mindset of 2 times means I'm really unlucky 3 times means there's something wrong with me?!

It's tough, but yeh I want to get it over and done with so accepting that this time it will happen again then I can get help.

Hope you're ok, it's awful what you've been through. X

I had 1 chemical and then 3 miscarriages before I had my daughter. I’m currently on miscarriage no.3 since having her. It is so so so hard but I feel like if I want this baby I have to just keep on trying.

I had a pregnancy of unknown location, followed by a chemical pregnancy, then I has ds1 who we think was a twin (bleed at 8 weeks resulted in an early scan showing 1 healthy baby and an empty sac), then ds2 also bled around 8 weeks, then a MMC and finally twin ds3&4 bled from weeks 7-12.

I never got any answers to my miscarriages but I suspect it was a chromosomal issue as all my sucessful pregnancies have been boys.

Hi @charpley162 I am so sorry for your losses. Its such a cruel experience to go through and you feel like you will never hold you baby.

My experience is that I am now nearly 12 weeks pregnant after 3 MMC at 9 weeks and 1 MC at 4 weeks. 2 of which were tested and were found to have chromosome defects. We have also been tested and have nothing wrong with us so our 4 losses have been entirely bad luck.

But the good news is that we have past our usual 'danger zone' and have a very wriggly baby at 11+4. We are not counting our chickens just yet, but this is serious progress. I also have DC from a previous marriage and never had any issues - only issue I had was conceiving as I have PCOS.

FWIW I have taken progesterone for the past 3 pregnancies. This one seems to have worked (so far). It might be worth discussing with your GP, though I know they are, for some reason, very reluctant to prescribe it. I got mine from my recurrent MC consultant. But you won't be referred to a RMC unless you've lost 3 babies, which is really hard Sad

Only just seen these replies, sorry. It's nice to see that things can work out. Just seems like such a long journey! Hope everything is still going well @Frazzlerock ? X

Hi @charpley162 I just wondered how you were getting on? I am in a similar situation currently.

Hi @Wildswimmer2020 I'm ok thanks. I've had blood tests at my doctors, had my telephone consultation for my referral for the recurrent miscarriages. She seemed confident that it was just a matter of time and one day it will happen for me. Booked me in for my thrombophilia blood tests for end of Jan. feeling a little more positive and going to start trying again after the tests x

That's good things are getting moving. Did they refer you after two miscarriages then? I was unsure if my doctor's would do if I would have to have a third...

Feeling positive for you. X

@Wildswimmer2020 sorry you're in a similar position, it's such a hard lonely place to be in. Sorry, not sure if I said this but I have had 3 this year that's why I was referred. But once I was referred it wasn't much of a wait at all. Have you spoken to your doctors x

I'm really sorry to hear that you've had 3, I must've missed that bit, I'm so sorry. I haven't spoken to my GP yet, going to contact them in the new year. Wishing you all the best. X

Hi @charpley162 just wondered how you’re getting on and how your bloods came back and if they found a cause for your mcs? I’ve had two early mc back to back and I suspect underliying cause, but can’t get referred until 3rd. Xx

Hi, so I've had blood tests at my doctors initially for diabetes, thyroid, sticky blood. They all came back normal. I was referred in October and November I had first appointment with consultant (which I thought was very quick) I talked her through whats happened and she said because in my last pregnancy I had a scan which showed a heartbeat at 7 week she said this was positive and thinks its a matter of time. She said she wanted to do thrombophilia testing (blood tests) but you can't have them until 3 months after your last pregnancy, I had them at the end of Jan and just got a letter to say they came back normal and I have another appointment with her on 18th March, probably to discuss next steps. So so far there has been no cause found. We have just started trying again, I think in my next appointment I'm going to ask her about trying baby aspirin on my next pregnancy x

Sorry to hear about your losses too, would your doctors not just do the initial tests I mentioned before you would be referred? Because my consultant said she won't do them cos they doctors can easily do them ones. Maybe see if they will just test them things for you?
