Advice after a miscarriage. When will brown discharge stop?

Hi all,

Been reading Mumsnet for a while, but this is my first post. Unfortunately not a happy one.

I'm 43, met my partner in crime late in life and have been trying to conceive since 2018 (no kids). Had a chemical pregnancy in January that year, and a second one in October that year. Then a 3rd one in March last year. Had positive tests with all of them, but hcg did not raise properly and I miscarried all around 4-4.5 weeks. All these felt like heavy and crampy periods.
Found out I was pregnant again end of February. This time it took and we had a heartbeat though a little slow and growth was a little behind my dates as well. An added complication was a large hematoma, so bled for weeks. Was told right away it can go either way. Went for a scan around 8.5-9 weeks and the baby had died. Missed miscarriage, probably before week 7.
Had a MVA on 10 April, was told they got everything. Bleeding did not stop and in a few days' time had very bad pain/cramping and passed a 1.5cm lump of tissue at home in the shower about a week after the procedure. Looked like pregnancy tissue. Had a scan after and was told all clean though still some blood that needs to come out.
It is now nearly 4 weeks since the procedure and 3 weeks since I expelled the tissue. Last weekend Clearblue still showed 1-2 weeks pregnant. I haven't bled for over a week, but still getting a mix of brown and yellow discharge, mostly when I wipe (TMI, sorry!). No abdominal pain, no smell. A little sore down there, might be thrush.
Question: Is the old blood tinged discharge normal after that time? When is this supposed to stop? I find it tough to move on whilst this is going on. Thank you in advance for your comments!

I'm sorry for your loss. It's really shit.
I had brown discharge for about 6 weeks after my MVAs. It is hard to move on while you still have the physical reminder everyday. It will stop eventually though.

Hi

I am so sorry for your loss. Hopefully the bleeding will subside soon . I too recently found out I was pregnant (for the first time), and have today miscarried. Started with light spotting last night, woke up this morning with very heavy bleeding.

My partner is being amazing but we had not told anyone else. I was about 5.5 weeks so very early days. I am feeling quite alone and not sure what to do. Thought coming on here may help. Sending you lots of love and luck, I think it helps to share stories and feelings.

@paradyning and @Timetogiveupthewine20, thank you so much for getting back to me. It is indeed a horrible time. Hope the light brown/yellow discharge will stop soon and it is reassuring to hear it can continue 6 weeks after the procedure. At least my pregnancy test was finally negative today.

@Timetogiveupthewine20, I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. We only told a couple of our closest friends, I would not be able to handle dealing with family. If that's any comfort, physically it's easier the earlier on you are (speaking of my previous 3 chemical pregnancies - I didn't need any procedures for these), but otherwise it hurts the same. Do you think you are miscarrying or was it confirmed with a scan and/or blood test? If it was not confirmed, there is a chance it could be ok. I don't want to give you any false hope, but some people have major bleeding with clots and cramps and go on to have a full-term pregnancy. Bleeding could be due to hematona or a burst blood vessel etc. If you are certain you are miscarrying, take all the time you need! Ask your GP to write you off work if you feel so. Get large overnight pads with wings, the strongest ibuprofin (400 mg) unless allergic to it etc., a couple of hot water bottles and lots of silly movies, chocolate and red wine. If pain/bleeding gets too bad ring EPU immediately or go to A&E if it happens at night. You will get through this, sending hugs.

@Wireless77 thank you so much for your reply and support. I am so sorry for your loss too, I really do feel your pain. And three times as well, you must be super brave. I spoke to my doctor this morning and she said it definitely sounds like a miscarriage. I have spent most of the day sat on the loo, pads just aren't doing it. This is like a whole years with of period in one go. Although I think the worst may have passed now. Hot water bottle and wine at the ready for sure, thank you for the advice. We have just been to get the large over night pads and about to get into bed with a move and cookies. How long did it take your bleeding to stop? I feel like I have lost a lot of blood. I can't tell you how much your reply means to me. Thanks a lot x

@Wireless77 I'm sure the negative test must be hard news to swallow. But hopefully it provides you with the closure to end this chapter and look forward to a new one. We are strong and we will have our little miracles one day. I am here if you want to talk or a shoulder to cry on x

@Timetogiveupthewine20 you seem to be doing all the right things. It's actually the 4th time for me, no kids. The first 3 were chemical pregnancies that I miscarried around 4-4.5 weeks. Had a few days of positive tests (two were also confirmed by blood tests), but hcg never raised appropriately. Physically these were just like a very heavy period for 6-7 days. The current one is tough. We saw a heartbeat though I had a large hematoma next to the baby and knew my chances were 50:50. I had MVA about 4 weeks ago, then passed more tissue about a week later, so it has been 3 weeks since it all came out. Noticeable bleeding stopped maybe 1.5-2 weeks ago. Still getting yellow-brown discharge. Test was still positive last Friday, but negative today. Take your time and let your body heal. And yes, we will get our babies!
