Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Waiting to find out if I miscarried

Just looking for some support really, don't think anyone can give me any answers. I'm quite confused as to what has happened. We'd not been using contraception, hoping for our second baby at some point. I got a BFN around 24th Jan so thought I was out for the month, think I ovulated mid month. Then got my period as normal and exactly on time. Then on Mon I got severe pains in my lower abdomen, started bleeding bright red blood, because I was sure I wasn't pregnant I thought could be anything from appendicitis to ovarian cyst to ectopic pregnancy, was very scared and unsure whether to go to hospital. After a couple of hours of basically contractions I passed something, maybe a blood clot or maybe not, and the pain eased off. I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I've been really sore and swollen for a few days. GP sent me to A&E and then EPU for blood tests. I have Hcg of 580, going for another blood test this morning to see if it's gone up or down. I am 90% certain I was 4 or 5 weeks and have lost my baby, I can't see how it could be anything else. Took another test last night and still a strong positive although I know that doesn't mean anything as it can take time for hormones to leave your system. I'm trying to assume the worst so as not to get my hopes up but I can't help feeling a little bit hopeful, they said my cervix was closed when I was examined. But what other explanation could there be for what happened? Hoping I can get some clarity today one way or another. To the other women going through this right now, it is so hard, I feel for you all.

Hi Sally, I'm really sorry to read your story. It's so awful going through this and I've had 2 miscarriages myself/ going through my 3rd now.
All I can offer is my own experience on this... after I have passed tissue in the past (and this can look like a big clot if as early as 4/5 weeks), my cervix did then close. I have always had positive tests until around 2 weeks later, when the hcg levels resolve themselves.
This all said... only a scan would confirm. I'd really recommend you calling your EPU and asking for a scan. Or if you want one straight away, you can usually book a private for on the day - around £60 depending where you live. I know the wait is the worst part and so I've always found the £60 well spent.
Take care xxx

Hi sally

So sorry you're going through this :( very similar happened to me last Friday, I posted on here about it too. I went to a&e, didn't know I was pregnant until the morning it happened. Had bloods done, confirmed pregnancy, I was examined and my cervix was closed too, I passed a golf ball sized clot/grey tissue that morning, strong cramping had heavy bleeding on Friday which tapered off and now stopped. I'm now waiting for a scan on Monday and im going crazy wanting to know if it was a miscarriage or I'm still pregnant as I have a lot of symptoms that became apparent since this happened. I really hope you get answers soon Thanks x

As above a private scan would be good for you to try, I can't get one as I'm living very rurally and no way to get there. Could you contact your GP and ask to be referred for a scan?

Thanks all for your replies. I have had more bloods done this morning and they’ll let me know this afternoon if levels are rising or falling. If rising then I get offered a scan. Not sure about paying for a private one as I can’t imagine there would be much to see, I think I must be pretty early. If I’m none the wiser by tomorrow I might book one. I think I already know the answer though. @SW83 and @sarahjsdddd sorry for your losses.

Update: as I thought, I have miscarried an early pregnancy. At least I know for sure now, and hcg levels are very low already so body has basically dealt with it. Thanks for your kind words everyone.

Another update and question: I miscarried on Monday night, and this morning, less than a week later, I got my period. I wasn't expecting it so soon. Has anyone else had this? When I had my second blood test this week my hcg levels were already low at less than 200 so I guess the pregnancy hormones just left my system quickly. So does this mean my cycle restarts now and I might ovulate in 2 weeks? Thanks all.

Hi sally
I asked this question today and I was told my period wouldn't come back until I get a negative pregnancy test (when the hcg has left your system), unless the bleeding has restarted?
