First MC. Scan this morning

I've been reading the really helpful advice and all your stories on this board for the past hour. I should be 10 weeks pregnant with DC3 today but yesterday I woke up bleeding. It was like the first day of a period but no pain or cramping. I went to A&E as my hospital's maternity ward won't see you before 16 weeks so they advised me to go to A&E. I had bloods taken which showed raised hCG levels and I had a positive pregnancy test. They arranged for me to visit EPU this morning and sent me home. I went for a scan at EPU this morning which showed a sac and a baby that is barely 5 weeks. The sonographer said it was too small to get an accurate date but around that. No heartbeat but it would normally be too soon to see one at 5 weeks anyway. Baby measures 3mm but the hospital won't do anything until they have confirmation that baby hasn't grown up to 7mm. So I have to go back in 10 days for a rescan to confirm no growth.

I know from my LMP and ovulation tracking that my dates cannot be wrong. Even if I were out by a week or two, baby should not be measuring 5 weeks. My LMP was 22nd Nov, so I know the second scan is just a formality. After my scan I was told to go back in the waiting room and wait for my rescan to be arranged. I was given the date and sent home. No information on what I should expect from my body over the next 10 days. I've been bleeding continuously for 31 hours now. I know a MC is happening but it seems that because they need the rescan to confirm it, they've sent me away without any support or information. Maybe I get the handholding and the support after my next scan but what about now? I might MC before that scan and I've been told nothing. I just feel in limbo and wanted to come here to talk. I've never experienced a MC before and I've been reading your posts here for support and help. Any support and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi F00k

Going through the same here.
Went to the maternity hospital today after light brown spotting yesterday evening turned into red blood, like a period early in the morning.
There was no heartbeat on the scan. I was told my baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks.
But I'm sure of my lmp date and that I was 12 weeks.theywill bring me back on Monday to scan again or see if I have miscarried over the weekend.
Sorry that you have to wait so long to confirm, that extra waiting time must be very hard.
This is my first mc.
Still period like, mild cramps every so often, and a bad migraine.
How are you feeling now are you still bleeding

SylvanianFrenemies Fri 31-Jan-20 16:09:25

Sorry you are both going through this. I'm in a similar position - found out on Weds that I have had a missed miscarriage at 11w, embryo stopped developing around 8w, I have spotting and mild cramps. If things don't progress I will have tablet tomorrow, pessaries Monday. I had a tfmr a year ago, and an early miscarriage around 5w the previous year. I've also had two successful pregnancies.

@f00k with my 5 week miscarriage it was similar to a heavy period, though within manageable pains that I know from previous deliveries were my cervix dilating. I didn't pass any recognisable pregnancy tissue (embryo, sac etc). I stopped bleeding after a week, and ovulated another week after.

I hope things go as smoothly for you. I don't know if the delay between the embryo stopping developing and you starting to bleed will.make a difference, but I don't see why it would. flowers

I'm so sorry to read you are both going through this too. It's an awful feeling.

@Whathappenedwhy I'm so sorry for you. Getting to 12 weeks where you finally feel you're out of that first trimester and can relax a little to then experience a MC must be heartbreaking. I feel similar in that I thought I had almost reached 10 weeks and nearing the end of the first trimester and had even told a few close people last weekend only for this to happen. Pregnancy feels so out of your control doesn't it? I'm still bleeding and it feels a little heavier now. How are you feeling?

@SylvanianFrenemies thank you for sharing your experience and I'm sorry you're going through it. Must be so hard for you to go through this again. How are you feeling?

I will be thinking of you this weekend, both of you in fact and I hope things go as smoothly as they can.

Thanks @f00k

Three losses in a row is really hard, but we knew our risks were increased because of my age. I am pretty numb right now but wonder if it will hit me harder once my pregnancy hormones drop down. We won't be trying again so I'm just trying to focus on what we already have.

Whathappenedwhy Fri 31-Jan-20 17:04:25

That's so much for one person.
There just didn't seem to be any ryhyme or reason to it does there?
I do have 2 children and to be honest I just took it for granted that I wouldn't have any troubles, I never thought about it. I didn't even know that 1 in every 5 pregnancy's can end in mc.
I found out about 4 weeks ago I was pregnant, and strangley before I found out, I had been reading the experiences of the women on this board. Then my pregnancy symptoms just disappered about 6 days ago. I think I knew in some way all along. If that makes sense?
Because I had been reading on this board and had some knowledge of what to expect it has helped me in a way.
Yes and it feels kind of out of body aswell. How can we be pregnant but not at the same time?

f00k Fri 31-Jan-20 20:18:21

@SylvanianFrenemies I understand your decision. Three in a row really is so heartbreaking. I'm sorry you've had to go through that. I read somewhere that after three MC in a row the hospital will investigate. Is that something that might help you? I don't know if answers do help but they may. As @Whathappenedwhy said, there really is no rhyme or reason sometimes. I've had 2 DC like both of you, and both pregnancies have been far from smooth sailing, although I'm extremely lucky and grateful that both have grown into perfectly healthy children. But I would just like a pregnancy to go as it should just once. Again no rhyme or reason to the various issues I've had in pregnancy. It really is out of our hands from the moment of conception. Whathappenedwhy, that has what has struck me today. For 5 extra weeks I thought I was still pregnant. My breasts continued to be sore, I was extremely tired, my stomach got bigger. Must be all the hormones that remain even after a loss. I never got sickness or nausea though which I questioned in my mind, but not everyone does and with DC1 I got it quite late in the first trimester. Perhaps in hindsight that was a sign things had not progressed. I'm trying not to go over things too much as there isn't really an answer.

They have offered to investigate, but I haven't made any decisions yet. My second loss was a termination of my DS who had Downs Syndrome with multiple complications, which meant he was very unlikely to survive until term. So we already know the issue there. Tbh, having had 2 healthy pregnancies in my 30s, and 3 losses in my early 40s, I am assuming it is age-related.

Whathappenedwhy Fri 31-Jan-20 21:49:45

When I asked why this could have happened my midwife said that a lot of the time the baby would have had some chromosomal abnormality, that even if the baby had gone to full term it would have not survived shortly after birth flowers

I feel so odd, pragmatic but sad. In this world but in another where my baby is still progressing. What a difference a day makes.
Would you both mind if I post a picture of my scan?

f00k Fri 31-Jan-20 23:31:25

@Whathappenedwhy I wouldn't mind at all. Post away. You're so right how much difference a day can make. I had my booking appointment on Wednesday, then Thursday I woke up and everything changed. It feels so cruel.

I'm so sorry about your DS @SylvanianFrenemies. That must have been so hard to go through, I can't even imagine thanks

Thank you..I've not told many people about this.

@Whathappenedwhy thanks so sorry you're going through this. Thank you for sharing your scan. Your baby will always been in your heart. Sending you lots of positive thoughts to get you through this. We will find the strength somehow.

flowers to you also.
Still in this in between world.
How are you now? My bleeding has been lighter the last few hours, would like to know when it will happen.

f00k Sat 01-Feb-20 00:43:54

Still bleeding too. It hasn't stopped at any point since Thursday morning. Changing a pad every few hours at the moment. I'd like to know when it will happen too. Haven't experienced any pain or cramps at all. I'm dreading it happening but at the same time I don't want this to go on and on.

Isn't it so stange not to have no pain when you think you should. I've had some cramping but very easy untill the bleeding slowed down and no cramps at all now.
You said in your op they didn't give you much information.
My midwife told me that the baby can pass in blood like a period or with clots or clumps or it can happen that the sac is still intact and that you may see the baby xx but that's not usual.

Whathappenedwhy Sat 01-Feb-20 01:04:40

*so strange not to have pain.

SylvanianFrenemies Sat 01-Feb-20 07:27:03

Thank you for sharing your precious picture @Whathappenedwhy.

@f00k thank you. The hardest thing was taking the tablet to end the pregnancy. But we felt lucky to see and hold him afterwards. It was obvious that he physically wasn't well, which helped with accepting and making sense of things. That's why I'm tempted to take the tests offered this time.

I'm bleeding at a period level now. I'm meant to be going to EPU for my first tablet in a couple of hours but might phone them to see if I still should.

Whathappenedwhy Sat 01-Feb-20 09:48:41

How are you doing now did you call them to see what to do?
I'm getting contractions now.
This is so cruel.
Really thinking of you both flowers

Upsydaisyy Sat 01-Feb-20 10:00:36

I’m sorry you are all going through this, it’s an awful thing to go through, I have just come out of the other side so to speak. I was almost 9 weeks but only measuring 6. I thought being fairly early it would be like a heavy period but this wasn’t the case at all, I don’t mean to scare you at all but I wish I had been more prepared. If you find yourself having to change full pads more than once an hour I would go to a&e. Stock up on lots of pads, huge pants, comfy clothes and paracetamol. Big hugs xxx

Whathappenedwhy Sat 01-Feb-20 12:36:08

Hi Upsydaisyy

I've passed everything now, after nearly 2 and a half hours of contractions I start passing and took about an hour. I was a bit shocked at the amount of blood also. Its eased up now though to like a light period.
Everything was a lot quicker than I expected. The contractions were hard to deal with knowing that it was a mc.
Still can't get my head around it all xx

f00k Sat 01-Feb-20 12:41:29

How are you feeling now @Whathappenedwhy? I've just started cramping in the last hour. I've had c-sections with both of my DC, so I've never experienced contractions before. The cramps are coming in waves. It gets intense for a few moments then goes. I've taken paracetamol.

Thank you for the advice @Upsydaisyy and I'm sorry you've been through this. I only have standard pads at home because my periods aren't usually heavy so I'm sending DP out for thick pads and more paracetamol.

Whathappenedwhy Sat 01-Feb-20 12:56:30

The cramps coming in waves sounds like contractions. It might get more intense and painful. Contractions will as you said come in waves through your back, belly or both with pressure aswell flowers
F00k I really feel you going through this now .
My body is fine now, very light bleeding no pain or cramps at all.

Upsydaisyy Sat 01-Feb-20 14:57:57

@Whathappenedwhy @f00k I hope you both start to feel better soon, Well as much as you can. I’d also recommend taking some time from work if you do work, it really helped to have some time off to gather my thoughts and properly heal

f00k Sun 02-Feb-20 01:38:23

@Whathappenedwhy I'm glad to hear you're feeling better now. I hope this will be over for you soon thanks

The pain became very intense late afternoon and TMI, I passed large clots about three times then the cramps went away for a couple of hours but they've come back again this evening but not as intense so I don't think it's over just yet. I've been taking painkillers every 4 hours and had a water bottle on my stomach earlier. I'm really grateful for the advice on here so I had some idea of what to expect. I wish the hospital had explained things on Friday rather than leaving me to it. I think by the time I go back in 9 days there won't be anything on the scan sad

Thank you @Upsydaisyy. I'm a SAHM. My youngest is only 16 months old though so not much chance to relax and have time to myself. DP is going to take a few days off and do the school runs for our 9yr old and allow me to get through this and not have to face anyone so soon. I've mostly been pretty calm and sort of accepting what is happening, but then DP will ask if I'm okay and I'll start crying.
