Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Question for those who conceived again before your first period

For those who have had a miscarriage, if you conceived again before your first period, how did you/the hospital work out how many weeks you were for your scans? How did they work out what date to book you in for your 12 week scan? Were any doctors/nurses annoyed with you for not waiting?

I ask because we sadly had a miscarriage back in September (surgical management on the 6th of Sep). We were planning to wait to try again until I got my period again, but 6 weeks on I’m still getting positive pregnancy tests and we just really want to try again (it's not possible that it’s a new pregnancy as we are using protection).

The hospital scanned me again a few weeks ago to check nothing had been left behind, so for some reason my HCG levels are just taking a very long time to get back down.

I’d really welcome any insight on if you did manage to conceive again before your next period, whether it made you anxious about how many weeks you thought you were/what the early scans showed (as in, were you worried if you thought you were for example 8 weeks but the scan showed 6).

Thank you very much to anyone who feels able to share their experience.

Sorry to hear about your MC OP.

After my D&C in August I did cheapy pregnancy test strips every Friday, waiting for the negative result to confirm everything had cleared. It took 4 weeks to get a negative. After the first negative I did another a week later to double check all had passed.

I had got into the habit of doing a test every Friday, and as the pack of 5 was only £3 from Boots it wasn't really breaking the bank to carry on as we were TTC again anyway. As it happened, I had a few pregnancy 'feelings' on the Tuesday after the last negative which I thought may have just been my AF coming back but did a test anyway. Came out with a faint positive.

As the last negative and first positive were only days apart the doctor was happy to date the pregnancy as 4 weeks at the time of first positive.

In hindsight however I wish I'd waited for one cycle to conceive to give my body a chance to recover, this pregnancy is quite a complicated one and am booked in with EPU this week as it's not looking great Confused

Hey, I lost at 5 weeks and didn't need any medical management it all passed naturally, I've had my negative pregnancy test so I'm going to start trying again, for me it's part of the healing process, they do advise you to wait for the first period but I might not catch this month anyway xx

I had an early miscarriage in June this year, lost the baby at six weeks and it all happened naturally. I fell pregnant again before the next cycle and my midwife booked me in for an early scan (the pregnancy was classed as high risk as I had a loop biopsy in march after my cervical screening result and had about 4cm of my cervix cut off). I was taking ovulation tests twice a day, so even though I hadn't had a period, I knew when I had ovulated and they used the date of the miscarriage as CD1. I went for the early scan at 7 weeks and all was well, strong heartbeat visible, etc. I had been dehydrated and really poorly last week so I went for a private scan on Wednesday to put my mind at ease and was told there was no heartbeat. I was 11 weeks on Wednesday and they think the baby's heart stopped beating at 8 weeks 6 days. I had a Medical Management on the same day. I'm going to see how long it takes to get a negative test and whether or not I ovulate before trying again. There seems to be a lot of mixed messages and advice but you need to do what is best for you. I agree it is part of the healing process. It's so difficult to move on after something like this and anything that helps is worth trying.

Syltherinincredible - I'm so sorry that you have lost two babies. I really hope that you don't have to go through this again.

Thank you for letting me know about how they dated your pregnancy - I think because I am still getting the positive pregnancy tests I am also getting positive OPKs because they can't differentiate between the HCG and the LH hormones, so not very useful for working out when I ovulate (if at all).

AliSxo - thank you for replying and I am glad it sounds like your body is getting back to normal with the negative test, I hope mine hurries up and does the same, all the best Smile

@sunshinefordays hi 👋 I had 2 miscarriages and got pregnant again straight away after 2nd (before period) I knew roughly when I ovulated as had the Ewcm so they added 2 weeks on making me about 4 weeks when I found out.
I am currently nearly 12 weeks and have my scan on Thursday, so scared but hopeful.
Will see what the scan dates me at! Xx
