Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Very very heavy period after miscarriage. Normal?

Hi everyone.

My first pregnancy sadly ended in a MMC and subsequent ERPC on the 11th of April. The operation went fine, aside from me needing to be kept in overnight because my heartrate and temperature kept spiking. Aside from that it was fine and I recovered well.

I bled for about ten days afterwards, but it wasn't too bad. The first 24 hours were fairly heavy, but after that it was like the tail end of a period.

I started my first period since my miscarriage on Wednesday night. It was quite light to begin with, but within 24 hours has increased to the point now where it's very very heavy. The heaviest period I've ever had!

Normally my periods are moderately heavy but this is a whole 'nother level. I went to bed wearing TWO maxi night pads last night and soaked through both of them. Pad, underwear, PJs, bedsheets... all soaked.

I've had to go out and stock up on the maximum absorbency pad I can find as my regular ones are filled within 45 minutes! I'm also passing lots of little clots. This is hellish!

Is this heavy a period normal after a miscarriage/ERPC? The nurse at the hospital warned me it may be 'slightly heavier than normal' but this is a whole new level of bleeding!

This sucks Sad

I don't (didn't) have heavy periods at all but I do remember they were a lot heavier after miscarriage, including lots of clots.
I've had several MCs, mostly around the 8-week mark, only one required hospitalisation, that was at 13 weeks. Lots of bleeding after that one.
I hope someone with more recent experience will be able to help you more.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Flowers

My period was only slightly heavier after my MMC, I don't think it sounds right to be soaking a pad every 45 mins maybe you should get a gp appointment to get checked over?

On reflection I think it might be a good idea to phone your surgery and explain the situation, maybe ask for a GP telephone consultation. Or they may well be able fit you in for an appointment.

Hi
Mine is a little heavier but managable.
A friend miscarried naturally and her first period was horrendous, bled through all her clothes for days. She was given medication to slow the bleeding.
Best check with the gp as you may be able to get some help x

I have just finished an 8 day heavier and much more painful than normal first period after my natural miscarriage (at 6 weeks). It was only about 3 and a half weeks after the mc bleeding started so I was a bit shocked it came so soon and loads of clots. The bleeding was heavy but not as bad as yours sounds (normal pads changed every few hours and fine over night).
As others have said I would try to get some advice from a medical professional.
Hope you are ok.

I'm in the gap between a MMC and my first post MC period, had successful medical management.

EPAU have warned me that the first period will be much heavier than normal - I've stocked up on the mattress sized pads and got the megaknickers on standby.

However, they did say at any point if I'm soaking more than one pad an hour to call them for advice.

Hope you're ok OP Thanks

CobaltRose Did you contact your GP or EPU about your period? How is it now?

Hope you're ok. xxx

Hi @KnitKitty, I contacted my EPU and they gave me the same advice upthread (if I'm filling a maxi pad within an hour, come in). But thankfully it has slowed down now!

Thanks everyone for your advice and support Flowers
