Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Blighted ovum? Empty sac at 6 weeks

I had a private early scan 2 weeks ago for reassurance as a few of my friends have had miscarriages in the last year and my symptoms were no where near as bad as with my 1st. (To be honest I thought I was being paranoid).

I should have been 7 weeks but the sonographer found an empty sac measuring 6 weeks, no yolk sac and no embryo. I was referred to the early pregnancy unit who could not tell me any different, but took blood for HCG levels and told me to wait two weeks and they would scan again.

I know this will likely end in miscarriage, and they should have been able to see something but as time goes on and the wait seems to be taking forever I feel like more hope is creeping back in. Am I wrong to hope? Is there any chance that it was hiding? I’ve had no bleeding or pain.

Was it a tummy scan or can someone do a transvaginal scan? They were able to see my wee bean at 6.5 weeks that way. Unfortunately we found out at 12 weeks that it didn't make it... I think at this stage you can only be positive as your dates may be slightly out..

It was internal yes. Hoping for late ovulation but as I was tracking it's not hopeful

I tracked to the day and my first scan showed nothing and then 2 weeks later, it was there with its little heartbeat. I can't really explain it time lines wise but they said that if ovulation is later that it can change the dates by 6 or so days which makes a difference. I'm post op, so hoping I'm making some sense lol

I went back to the private clinic today as I couldn't stand the hope creeping in. The sac has grown but they still couldn't see anything there and it hasn't grown as much as it should have done

Hi trying

So sorry to hear this. I had exactly the same thing. Just a sac on first scan, then when went back it had grown a tiny bit but still no embryo :( It’s so upsetting. But on the plus side, i then got pregnant on my next cycle (after a straight forward D&C) and the resulting bean is now 7 months old. I know it sounds odd, but apparently we often conceive straight after a D&C. I think they give you the options of waiting to pass the sac naturally, taking medication to make it pass, or having a D&C.
best of luck to you Flowers

I am so sorry are going through this I had a blighted ovum on my first pregnancy. I had a d&c as despite heavy bleeding the sac didn't actually budge. Like a previous poster I got pregnant very quickly afterwards and had dc1. Please be kind to yourself OP as it's such a difficult thing to go through

Thank you all for your kind words. Can I ask if you were given the option for d and c? I've spoken to a friend who had a miscarriage and she was only given tablet or natural option. I would much rather have planned d and c and don't want to worry my two year old if I'm in pain/ bleeding at home if I can help it

I was given 3 options, natural, medical or surgical.

Same as pips - I was given the choice between the 3 and wanted the certainty of having it done without pain/bleeding etc. I hadn’t started bleeding naturally at all.
Hope it goes ok x

Thanks @bumblenbean. I feel that same as you. A few friends who have had natural miscarriages have ended up in hospital anyway and if I had to go in in an emergency OH wouldn't be able to come with me because of our daughter being at home.

Thanks all for your support. Haven't used this much but comforting to know others out there have been in similar situations
