Someone help? Stressed about Ectopic/PUL

Hey ladies.

I'm looking for someone who's going/gone through what I'm going through right now.

I was approx 8 weeks pregnant when I started experiencing abdominal pain. It wasn't severe but enough for me to notice. I booked a private scan however the sonographer couldn't locate my pregnancy through a TVS and advised I go to A&E to hopefully rule out ectopic pregnancy.

At A&E they conducted various tests which all came back fine however my HCG levels were very low (129). They called me back in the next day for another 3 TVS with different clinicians. None of them could find my little bean sad. They said it's a PUL with likelihood of ectopic.

They have put me on expectant management. My HCG levels have been dropping (72) then to (46) 48 hours later.

I haven't had any severe abdominal pain, spotting or bleeding or any shoulder tip pain.

It's hard not to worry, for my health & my pregnancy. I've learnt to accept that the outcome for my pregnancy isn't positive due to dropping HCG but the wait inbetween appointments and uncertainty is killing me sad. If anyone has been through this could you please share your experience.

It would be much appreciated.

Thankyou xx

I'm sorry I can't offer advise in the way of ectopic pregnancy. But I'm currently going through a miscarriage at 9 weeks so I know a little bit how you feel. Sending lots of love to you... rest lots xxxx

Hi OP I also can't offer advice re ectopic but have recently been through a loss and know the waiting between appointments, especially when you know the end result is not going to be a positive one, is very distressing. I'm sorry this is happening. Hopefully someone more helpful than me will be along soon. Look after yourself.

Thankyou ladies for your support! Sorry for your losses too, I guess information about ectopic pregnancies is just hard to come by. Thanks again xx

I had a couple of pul, sorry you're going through this. The dropping hcg is a sign that the pregnancy is naturally ending in miscarriage, rather than an ongoing ectopic pregnancy. This is good in terms of your health, and how quickly you can try again if you want to. Also in your next pregnancy you should ask for a scan at six weeks to confirm location. Good luck Flowers

Sorry your going through this OP. I had a ectopic pregnancy last year but mine had ruptured so once they done a scan they could see blood but no sign pregnancy in my uterus
In my experience I had a server abdominal pain but it wasn't constant it came and went in waves but when it was there it was awful and very minimal (but still visible ) blood loss. Thanks

I went through this about this time last year. The dropping HCG shows things are happening naturally so likely they'll want to watch & wait for now. Obviously any worries/concerns contact EPU for advice.
My levels yoyo'd for 6 weeks or so,they like them to get below 10, there was concern I had a continuing 'small' ectopic so I eventually had methotrexate which was completly fine & with hindsight I would of had it earlier if I hadn't been so worried about the side effects. Look after yourself.

Hi @Georgina14 - so sorry you are going through this. Thanks I had exactly this happen 2 years ago, except i wasn't as far on as you. I was scanned endlessly looking for the pregnancy, and they thought it was on my right ovary, but they weren't entirely sure. My HCG was only between 50-100 at its peak, but took a relatively long time to go down given how low it was. So I was 'expectantly managed' and my HCG basically fell by about 1-2 a day. It finally dropped to 0 on xmas eve.! I had a HSG afterwards and my tubes were clear, so I am glad it was managed naturally, however the waiting and the constant going for bloods and scans was horrible. Waiting to not be pregnant when you have been desperate to be so is just shit. Take care of yourself xx

Hello, really sorry this is happening for you. I have been through the same thing and the tests and waiting for results is so hard. My levels dropped for a few days, then stated the same so I ended up in hospital. Please look at the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust website as there is so much good info on there and a great help as not everyone knows what is going on. Look out for sharp shoulder pain, called shoulder tip pain, unless you've had gallstones it won't be like anything you've had before and you should go to hospital. Looking further ahead it is possible to conceive after an EP after waiting for a while , at least 3 months, and I got pregnant with one Fallopian tube. It is a very tough time though and I remember the worry and waiting, look after yourself.

Thanks ladies! I have an appt tommorrow, my abdominal pains have completely gone and still no bleeding. So I hope that's a good sign. I hope tomorrow is the last day I have to go back there, fingers crossed. This whole experience has been soo traumatic & has made me soo scared to try again. Thanks again for sharing your experiences & all your support! I appreciate it.

Hi OP. I'm currently going through a very similar thing and agree with you it's so hard just waiting for it all to be over even once you've accepted the pregnancy won't continue.
My bleeding has now stopped after 2weeks. Have been told it's a PUL which has been explained to me as meaning it could be a naturally occurring miscarriage that was either originally located in the uterus or elsewhere which means it could be possibly ectopic. We've also chosen the expectant management route although my HCG levels are higher than yours (1600 on first test, 700 on latest which was 2 weeks after the first)

I've been able to find very little info on PUL but what I have read it does seem that people are given very different explanations of what it means! I hope your appt went well yesterday Flowers

Hi OP,

I've just been through this too. I was around 6 weeks pg and started bleeding. When I went to EPU I had an internal scan but they couldn't see anything. When they did my bloods my levels were at around 600 but when they did them 48 hours later they had dropped but not enough for a definite miscarriage. I then had to have my bloods done every 2 days for a few weeks until they dropped to 10 on Friday and I was discharged from EPU. They are still unsure if it was a miscarriage and it just took a while for the hormones to decrease or if it was a PUL, although they think it most likely was a PUL that resolved itself. They have also said that if I manage to get pg again then I will get an early scan at around 7 weeks which I suppose is a good thing.

It's such a sad time, be kind to yourself OP. I was also really worried about my health if it was ectopic but hopefully yours will resolve on its own too. I know the waiting between appointments is so hard. I hope it all goes okay for you Flowers

It's just soo frustrating ladies. Today I've been told my HCG has increased from last week. Trying to heal emotionally & fight a flu at the same time right now is not easy.

Really sorry to hear that Georgina14 I felt the same way when I had to keep going back but it must be worrying for you with the hcg levels increasing. I hope they have fallen next time you go, it's so horrible waiting in between appointments x

That must be so frustrating and confusing hearing that they've gone up. Sorry you didn't get the conclusion you were hoping for. I'm with you on wanting it all to be over too. I feel like I'm ready to move on to the next stage of dealing with things now but am stuck in limbo waiting for my body to do what it's supposed to and its so hard having pregnancy hormones kicking round while trying to deal with this. Be kind to yourself x

Sorry you're going through this. I had an ectopic pregnancy earlier this year, found lots of useful info and support here: www.ectopic.org.uk/talk/

I had over a week of thinking I was going through a mc with reassurances that my pregnancy was definitely not ectopic, only to discover it was. All the scans and blood tests and waiting for results are so difficult, let alone trying to come to terms with the loss. What have they suggested now? Are they just going to keep monitoring your levels? Hope you have some RL support too.

Thankyou ladies, means soo much! My HCG has remained stagnant at 20 for the past 2 weeks then this week it rose to 23. I know they are still low numbers but It’s just the wait & the anxiety around it all!. I hope my body resolves it itself.

@kate288 thankyou Hun, For how long did you have blood tests for if you don’t mind me asking?

@moomin11 Thankyou for the website, I’ll check it out!

@MrsMoose0 I know hun, once this is over we can move on, this is just making it harder but such is life. What have your recent numbers been?

@Georgina14 I had the blood tests for around 4 weeks. When I first started going back it was every 48 hours but then once the hormones were decreasing more rapidly they let me go back once a week which was much better.

How have been back since they had increased?

Sorry your having to go through this Flowers

Hey ladies,

(Sorry for TMI in advance). So I started bleeding yesterday then today I’ve been bleeding (red & brown). It’s not a lot of bleeding at all. This is the first time I’ve bled since my last period, before I was pregnant. The cramps I’ve had today as well are like a sharp pain that gets worse when I move or cough. Should I be concerned? Can your tubes rupture with such low HCG’s?

Thanks xx

Hi @Georgina14 it's unlikely, but not impossible as far as I know, so you would be best to call the clinic - I assume they've given you a number to call in Emergency?
It is probably a good thing you are bleeding as hopefully it will be your body getting it out. It's horrible, I'm so sorry you are going through this - hopefully it will be over soon xx

My first ectopic I knew there was something wrong loads of bleeding pain etc they scanned and did bloods said they levels had doubled but had gone up so good sign then the heavy bleeding started clots and everything but I still felt pregnant went for a scan got the usual so sorry you must have mc. I said I still feel really pg she said it's your ind playing tricks on you but took bloods. Later that day i felt really poorly bad stomach cramps so I phoned them back she said I'm so glad you called your levels are still at 8,000 you need to come in had another scan by this time it felt like labour the pain was coming in waves I couldn't sit down striking pains up my bum. Still couldn't see anything on the scan said both tubes looked clear. They were going to stick me on a ward with pain relief until a consultant stepped in and said take her to theatre her levels are stupidly high for there not to be a pg inside the womb. Surgeon saw my family after and said she is lucky to be alive her tube was rupturing any longer and she would have bled to death I already had a pint of blood in my stomach x second ectopic I knew straight away and took myself off to the hospital they saw it on scan so that was that! Two rounds of ivf later and got my beautiful girl who is now 6. Anyway sorry for that epic post but the moral of the storey is don't leave anything if you feel wrong go with your gut instinct. I would go and get checked. Sorry for what you are going through I've been there and it sucks big time I lost five beans before my little girl so if you need anything just holler x
