Bleeding after surgical management

I had the surgical method of miscarriage management yesterday and am just looking for a little advice from anyone that can shed some light on this...

I'm still very groggy from the GA but have had very little bleeding to speak of and only mild cramping. From what they prepared me for, I was expecting at least a few days of heavy bleeding but there's practically nothing at all. They sort of prepared me for what happens if bleeding continues but there was no mention of not bleeding. Admittedly I've spent most of the day lying horizontally but not sure if that makes a difference! Should I be worried there's no bleeding or think myself lucky?

Hi. Sorry to hear what you are going through. I too had surgical management yesterday (MVA with no GA). I have very little bleeding and no cramps. The only discharge I have is a yellow colour and feels waxy. I believe this may have been the antibiotics I had to insert before the procedure (sorry if tmi).

Ah ok well that makes me feel a little better to know that I'm not the only one that isn't experiencing this "heavy bleeding" they prepared me for, thank you. I am also sorry for what you're going through, pretty tough deal, huh?! Take care of yourself, thank you again for your response.

Hi emvy and highself sorry about your losses.
I had surgical management yesterday also and have very little bleeding today. However I am suffering a bit this evening from diarrhoea and cramps :-/ I dunno if that's from the misopostel they have before the surgery or something else.
But when I had surgical management back in September I remember the bleeding being much heavier than this time round. I will also say be prepared over the next few days / week or could get heavier as you become more active as that definitely happened me last time.
Hope your both getting on OK.

Thank you smurf. I'm sorry you have had to go through this as well, and more than once. I did wonder whether it may get heavier once I spend more time up and about. Toileting wise I've had the opposite problem though! I am putting that down to medication of some kind and I would presume yours probably is too. Thanks again, I hope you're also holding up okay x

Hi emvy . How is the bleeding today? I bled a bit through the night and it's slightly heavier today but very mild. No pain, which is good.

Hi highshelf. Still very little. I seem to be passing little brown clots more than anything. Also very little pain. It seems to come in waves if I have any. Good to hear you're also not suffering too much physically. How are you holding up emotionally?

Emotionally I'm OK thanks emvy. I'm pleased you're in no pain. I've decided to give myself 4 weeks till I ttc so I'm on countdown till then. That's if the negative pregnancy test arrives by then. My levels were in the high 4000's on Tuesday so it might take a while to get back down to 0! How are you feeling?

That's a good idea, a good length of time to fully get past this (as much as ever possible). I was told that as soon as all of the "products of conception" are gone, your hormone levels will return to normal almost immediately, within the space of a couple of days. I don't know if it's me being optimistic but my boobs are already less sore and the nausea is almost entirely gone so I'm hoping that's a good sign! How are you pregnancy symptoms looking?

I'm doing ok thanks. Didn't sleep brilliantly for it circulating my head over and over but I guess that's bound to happen until I've fully grasped it. Baby steps!

Can I ask were you both told to do a pregnancy test to check out goes back to negative? I wasnt and was told there was no need for a follow up. But I've seen lots of people on here mentioning tests to get negative first..

Hi smurf, yes, I was told by several professionals throughout my appointment to do a test three weeks later. I was told this ensures there are no "products of conception" left. If the test is positive, it indicates that something has been left behind, at which point I would need to call the epu where they would rescan and check. If something could be seen, I would have to go back into surgery. If you don't mind me asking, what treatment did you have? If any, or did you miscarry naturally? I'm sorry if you've said before, there are so many members it's hard to keep up x

smirf123 the doctor who performed my procedure just sent me on my way and said I'd be back to normal in a couple of weeks. It was the nurse that told me to take a test in 3 weeks to be sure that everything was gone. I had a scan straight after the procedure, which showed that everything was clear, but if there is tissue left over then this can emit pregnancy hormones and indicate that there is bits left waiting to be expelled. I think the nurses have strickter protocols to adhere to whereas the doctor offers advice upon what they see at the time. The nurse told me I had to wait 2 weeks for a procedure, incase of false diagnosis. Luckily for me, the doctor was there who said there was enough evidence and so she was happy to carry it out that day. EMVY I had very few symptoms to begin with. Tender breasts for a week, which disappeared weeks ago. I know some people have no symptoms but throughout this whole, albeit short, pregnancy I felt no different. Back on the conception supplements today to prepare my body the best way I can. Keeping healthy will be key!

It sounds like you're all clear then highshelf, it's good that they scanned you on the day afterwards. I also haven't stopped with the vitamins, decided there was probably no point and they don't do any harm generally anyway!

I had erpc under general anaesthetic emvy they didn't really tell me much tbh. Just said they recommend to wait one period before trying again and have me Ted stockings to wear for 3-4 days until fully active to prevent blood clots after surgery.

Report
emvy · 09/03/2017 18:24

I had the same smurf. But didn't get told I needed to wear the stockings any longer than after the surgery itself. I guess it really depends on where you go and who you speak to! I guess also, you won't get a period if you still have anything left from the pregnancy so that kind of covers the negative test thing... maybe!

I had the procedure just over a week ago and had next to no bleeding but a lot of pain. The pain has started to subside but I've started bleeding again. I was never told to do a pregnancy test by any one and was told I didn't need any other follow-ups.

Ok thank you smash. The pain has got increasingly worse today. It does appear advice varies quite a lot!

I had a surgical on 24th Feb, I didn't bleed much after just red spotting. The bleeding got heavier around day 4/5 and cramps also got worse then which is normal apparently. I'm still bleeding now.

I'm still not bleeding much but it looks like there's more to come! It's starting to get easier physically (so far!) But worse mentally!

The pain has got a lot worse over the past 12 hours for me so where I'm feeling like I have more energy, physically it's not great Sad I'm glad you're feeling a bit better physically though highshelf. I agree with the mental thing.. every quiet moment where I'm not focused on something i just replay it over and over and over. Distraction is key! Even if that is only movies and books for the time being!

I'm sorry to hear that your pain has got worse emvy. Something tells me mine isn't too far away. I'm back to work on Monday though so I hope it comes before then! Not being able to carry on with normal life has been one of the hardest parts. Sitting looking at the same 4 walls is torture! All I keep thinking about is what if it happens again!

Good luck going back Monday highshelf, I hope you're feeling well enough and make sure you ask for more time if you need it! I've got until Wednesday which is nice but I insisted I wanted to come back by then as like you say, not doing anything almost makes it harder!

Yes I keep thinking the same! I'm keen to try again but also petrified that this won't be the only time it happens. I guess it's only natural for us to go through these stages though, let's hope we can calm ourselves by the time we fall again!
