Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

How do I find out my results?

I was 6weeks pregnant. I have been having bleeding for the past 4 days. I had a scan on Friday which looked bleak. I had the first hcg blood test on Friday and the second yesterday morning. They said they would ring back with the results yesterday but no one has. There was a significant chance it's ectopic.

I've rung the hospital switchboard and asked them to ask the gynae on call to ring me. But they said they can't do that.

The early pregnancy unit is shut until tomorrow. I know tomorrow isn't far to wait but it's driving me insane. I can't start to grieve when there is the thinnest chance that this baby hasn't gone. I know what the answer will be but I need to hear it.
Can I ring the gynae ward even though I've not been there?

Sorry you're going through this - sending you hugs.
I think you may have to wait until tomorrow, it's difficult to get hold of anyone over weekends and bank holidays Sad It feel like such a long wait though doesn't it xx

The holiday opening hours has caused me hell Im so annoyed. Poor minimum wage earners are working all the shifts in macdonalds and supermarkets yet hospital appoinments are almost closed putting women through hell at the worst time. I do feel that drs and nurses are overworked but to not have staff there who can assist during miscarriage is dreadful.
You've mentioned ectopic which can become life threatening. If it was me I would go to a&e and tell them you have pain and get need scan of ovaries to be sure.

What did the scan show? You say bleak but don't say if anything Was seen?

Sorry, this is shit, utter utter shit for you. Like you say, you know the answer, you just need to be told.
Having suffered multiple miscarriages, I stopped having the hcg blood tests because they didn't tell me anything, well, the results just caused more anxiety and in the end told me what I already knew.
You will probably need to wait until tomorrow, gynae ward probably won't be able to give you results.

Where did you have the scan and blood tests, was it at the EPU? The gynae ward would be able to access your blood results, and although you're only 6 weeks, you may be able to talk to someone in the Day Assessment Unit and see if they would tell you.
The Ante Natal unit where I worked had a dedicated results line, do you know if your hospital has one?
Another (very long shot) possibility is to ring the lab, they're not supposed to give out results to patients, but you may get a senior to let you know, as you were supposed to get a ring back.
As PP said though, any pain or vomiting get to A&E, a burst ectopic is life threatening.

Thank you so much for all your responses. It's some comfort to know others have gone through this.

Scan showed almost empty sac, they said this might mean it's too early to tell. However there was also a mass underneath my uterus which they couldn't say for sure what it was - possible ectopic. The consultant was meant to ring on Friday but never did. Yesterday when I had the second blood test I was promised a call back but heard nothing. I've had further bleeding and back pain and cramps.

I know how the system works, I know it's just one more day but this is utterly shit.

First set of tests was in the epu, second set was in emergency assessment unit as they were on a Sunday.
Gynae ward won't give me any information and can't get put through to path lab. No results line at my hospital, or none that I know about.
Can I have a hot bath and does anyone know if I can take ibuprofen now?

Paracetamol 4 hourly, ibuprofen 8 hourly, if pain isn't controlled by those, you can get codeine based pain killers over the counter, take instead of paracetamol.
All the best, I've been where you are many many times, it's awful xx

It sounds like you are having a miscarriage. The wait is hard but necessary to confirm it. I would have the bath and the ibuprofen if I were you. I had similar happen to me a few years ago over Christmas and had a wedding to attend. After 4 days of bleeding I knew there was no real hope so drowned my sorrows at the wedding.

Your story sounds exactly like mine. If your EPU is connected to a hospital, there will be a gynaecologist on call. You could ring ooh and get GP on call to call gynaecologist on call.
