Medical miscarriage due to abnormality

Hi, just wondered if anyone else had been through the same awful experience and if anyone had any advice.

I decided to have a medically managed miscarriage at my local hospital as after a CVS test my baby was diagnosed with Edwards syndrome. I was 14 weeks +2 days. It was a terrible decision to have to make as this was a much wanted baby. I had a reaction to the drugs they give you to induce miscarriage, luckily the baby was passed quite quickly but as they then couldn't give me anymore, the placenta was retained and the doctor had to intervene to make sure nothing was left. It was very traumatic as I wasn't expecting this to happen. Its been a week since I lost my baby and I am worried whether the way the dr intervened was normal or not? It says that usually this would be done under theatre conditions but yet she was able to do this as I lay on the hospital bed? Ive had some heavy bleeding followed by days of hardly any bleeding at all. Im just hoping there has been no damage. Its very difficult to find the correct information on the internet and Ive been worrying about this ever since. Should I request a follow up scan to check nothing was left behind?

I'm so sorry you have had to go through this.

I had a termination for medical reasons in jan at 22 weeks. Our much wanted dd2 also had Edwards but the markers weren't picked up until the 20 week scan.

I also had an awful reaction to the induction drugs. Shaking, high temp but freezing cold. I was also treated for in infection (we had to have an injection to stop her heart as after 21 weeks babies can be born alive so this is more humane, it takes a couple of days for the induction to kick in at that stage to an infection from carrying a baby who has already died is fairly likely)

Have you been in contact with arc? They have been fantastic for me, their forum is a wonderful place full of women who have been through the same.

That must have been really difficult having to go through that at 22 weeks. Im really sorry to hear that. I had exactly the same reaction as you to the drugs. That was scary in itself. Ive had quite heavy bleeding on and off since but with no temperature or pain, but Im going to call the hospital this morn to ask for a follow up.

I have been on the ARC website and donated money for the trees for life in memory of our daughter Martha. I also joined a FB page called ending a wanted pregnancy. They have a private group and have been a great support.

I'm so sorry for your losses OP and Kitty. I had medical mangement for a miscarriage and also had a retained placenta. I went into cervical shock and began to haemorrhage so the procedure you described was also carried out on a hospital bed so I can assure you it is normal for a procedure like that not to take place in theatre. I bled for about 2 weeks after that, getting lighter as time went on. Since then ovulating has been very painful but I dont know if that is related to the procedure or not. Hope you are getting lots of help and support.
