In the early hours of June 22nd, whilst most of us are still snuggled under our duvet, an incredibly brave team of 6 mums are setting off in the dark to swim the English Channel, in order to raise awareness of the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity SANDS.

These are not Olympic or celebrities with dedicated personal trainers. They are ordinary people; ordinary local mums who want to give something back to a charity which was pivotal in supporting them through the loss of their babies.

The team have funded the boat themselves and all the money raised from this fearless event will support SANDS in their work towards researching causes for stillbirth, how to prevent stillbirth and education of medical professionals who work with bereaved parents when a stillbirth or early neonatal death has occurred.

Please take a look at the website (links below) and see how they work to educate professionals in hospitals, pioneer research and support families to make sense of losing a baby by holding events to remember them by.

If you would like to support these brilliant women by donating to a their cause, please follow the link below. Please do leave a comment too - it all helps with the motivation to get in to the cold water and swim the distance amongst the sea’s more natural inhabitants like stingrays, jellyfish and other ‘unmentionable' things!

If you are a bereaved parent and would like your donation to be in memory of your child, please say in the comments. Much as this swim is fuelled by two of the team having lost their own babies, they are also swimming for all those babies that died before they were born or shortly after they were born. In addition to raising money for the charity the mums are keen to raise the profile of something that is frighteningly frequent as well as awareness of the support that is available to those it affects.
