Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Getting pregnant after surgical management of miscarriage?

OhTheDrama · 08/05/2014 17:27

I found out last Thursday when I was 10+5 that our baby had no heartbeat and it looked like it had passed away at 8 weeks. I have been booked in for surgery on Tuesday to remove the pregnancy.

We are both very keen to try again immediately once I've stopped bleeding. Has anyone ever done this?

drama I'm so sorry you lost your baby. Official advice is you wait for one proper AF postMC before TTC again. The cycle immediately postMC is not-so-affectionately known as the WTF (what the f*) cycle because it's so difficult to predict how long it will be and when/if you will ovulate. Some people do manage to conceive immediately, there are two possible issues - the first is with dating a subsequent pregnancy because you can't use a ERPC/MC date as LMP, not so much of a problem as can be dated from a scan. The other potential problem is lining quality, either because it is all sucked out in the ERPC and doesn't build up in first cycle (resulting in a scanty first period) or because material is left behind that would be shed in the first AF. There have been plenty of people who have conceived without a period and it has all been fine, but unfortunately I have seen quite a few people have 2 back to back miscarriages.
I hope all goes as well as can be expected on Tuesday.

sorry for your loss, I was advised by the epau to wait for at least a couple of af cycles to allow the womb to become strong again. sending you hugs. bakingtins I hadn't heard about the dating issues but it seems so obvious. x

We tried straight away, the consultant told us there was no reason not to, apart from making it hard to date the pregnancy.

We got pregnant on my second cycle afterwards.

I remember the desperation so well please take heart in the fact that I was on a conception after MC thread on here and everyone (about ten of us) was pregnant again within 18 months if their MC, most within 6 months. There was one exception but she'd split up from her partner.

I also did some research about it and found a paper stating that 85% of people were pregnant again within two years. The total cohort included people who changed their minds about having children or split from their partners. So, in general, the vast majority of people are successful. This made me feel better.

Sorry for your loss, we found out at our 12 wk scan. It's an awful time but it will get better.

Good luck

Oh and when you're ready, look for the conception after MC threads. They're such a comfort and also have great advice.

Yes, you can start trying again whenever you feel ready.

I had 4 ERPOC after 4 MMCs and always conceived quickly. I now have 4 DCs Smile.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is crap. Hope you get through it all well and wish you best of luck for trying again.

AFAIK, the advice to wait a cycle or 2 is outdated and goes back to when there were no scans available for dating purposes.

We waited a cycle but that was for our emotional benefit rather than anything else. We were told we could start again straight away if we wanted to.
