Hi I'm sorry for your losses, I lost my son at 20 weeks in sept but I know this was due to incompetent cervix. I have read posts in the past though where women have had late losses with no cause found and gone on to have full term children.

We have a bereavement thread that I will post a link to if you want to talk, everyone is lovely and realy supportive, maybe someone there will be able to answer your question x

I dont think so, they usually know straight away if it's a problem with the cervix, mine is weak and the weight of the pg caused the cervix to open and the amniotic sack to push through

laura2802 · 06/01/2012 22:57

i dont think its my cervix not knowing is heartbreaking both so late and i went thru it in 09 with my first born whos 7 i had severe pre eclampsia had emer c section.n thru this preg my bp was raisin hi slightly but thy werent concerened

It must be awful not knowing the cause, I hope they can give you more answers this time.

I worry about trying again as although my condition is treatable, the treatment doesn't allways work.

confuddledDOTcom · 06/01/2012 23:18

I'm sorry for your losses, I lost a little girl at 20 weeks and I'm fortunate I did get answers and carried successfully because of it.

If it's the cervix you will have very short labours, very little will happen in the way of contractions.

I would seriously recommend you get tested for Antiphospholipid (aka Hughes) Syndrome and don't just let your obstetrician do it, ask your GP to refer you to an rheumatologist for proper investigation. The reason I say that is that the blood test can come back clear, in some women it only shows up in pregnancy, so you need a specialist. 20-24 weeks is the danger point with Hughes Syndrome so the fact you've lost two in that time is a possible indicator. The Pre-E and BP are also potential complications of it. The positive is that I've now got three babies because it's very treatable and they look after you well.

It's bit of a soapbox for me as I believe (and I know Prof Hughes has stated this himself) that all pregnant women should be tested for it and all women who've lost babies should be tested. 1 in 8 are lost because of this condition, as are 1 in 8 Pre-E's down to it.

Definitely not an IC then! It's not surprising though that you weren't dilating, your body wasn't ready at 21 weeks to deliver a baby and the baby was exerting enough pressure on your cervix.

Antibody tests don't really tell you a lot, they need to be taken as part of a picture which is why you really need to see a specialist (rheumatologist, immunologist or haematologist). They can give a clear picture that something is definitely wrong but a clear result could mean that your levels are OK now, that you're seronegative (get results without positive tests) or that you only test in pregnancy (like with diabetes). My obstetricians were a nightmare, I test "borderline" (which a rheumie will tell you doesn't exist) and they didn't want to treat me! Fortunately I'm under joint immunology/ FMT so immunology made those decisions.

Have you had clotting tests done?

laura2802 · 07/01/2012 00:40

i had 20 tests done wen baby had passed in me havent been explain ed fully but for clooton n proteins and all antibodys theyr clear ad more in dec 22nd which im waitin on now n my boy had a pm done so waitin till 27 to get reslts bk i dont knw how ill cope with no answers both boys at 21 weeks but theyr investigatin this time round but so far teasts are ok

With ic the cervix is weak and pressure of the pregnancy causes it to open, the baby is still alive and if they can they try to put a stitch in the cervix to close it back up, I had a stitch put in but it failed as my cervix was 5-6 cm dialated.

I didn't have any pains . it wasn't like being in labour, and there's usually no induction, the cervix just keeps opening until the baby is born

laura2802 · 07/01/2012 00:47

i dont knw wen i was in labour the midwife felt about n said hadnt started dilatin at all yet so i dont think its a ic .but my blood pressure started goin up from 4month i dont feel like im in safe hands for next time and feel like im gettin mugged off wen i need answers if u knw wat i mean my heads every were up n dwnxx

OP posts:
Moominsarescary · 07/01/2012 00:58

No you would have been dilating with no labour if it was ic.

My second and third babys were early due to my waters breaking at 34 weeks and 31 weeks and they don't know why it happened either time, they couldn't find any infection or anything.

I think confuddled is right , they should refer you to a specialist for tests, do you know when you will see the consultant.

laura2802 · 07/01/2012 01:11

seein him on 27 jan with new blood tests and babys pm i worry as my asthma got bad and was usin ventolin but my dr said im to use it wen needed

Yes, I had a MC at 22.5 weeks. Post mortem said that the baby was fine. I had an infection in my womb. I then had 2 further MC at 7 and 9 weeks. I thought that it would never happen for us. Many people seemed to write me off as one of those women that couldn't have children Hmm My consultant was fab and said there was no reason why I couldn't do it, just very very bad luck. When I was in hospital, I read a thank you card that was pinned to a notice board. It was from a lady who had had 8 MC and finally had a healthy baby. I made my mind up there and then that if it took 8 MC, then I would just keep on going until I got my baby. We had a healthy baby - 4th attempt, then a further MC, and then 2 more healthy babies. You can do it, just keep going. I have a friend who like you had two MC at 21 weeks and they decided to put a stitch in her cervix, she now has two children. Good luck, and please please just keep going xxx

recall · 07/01/2012 23:31

Just want to add that the consultant would scan my cervix at 12 weeks to ensure that it was closed, and it always was, just reassuring. Also I was given a swab so that if I could swab any nasty discharge as it happened, which also never happened, but it made me feel in control.

confuddledDOTcom · 08/01/2012 00:43

I had weekly cervical scans to make sure I wasn't dilating (goodness knows why when I've never shown any sign of IC) and monthly swabs throughout pregnancy.

Even if all tests are coming back negative it might be worth taking Jr Aspirin next time as studies have shown it can have a massive positive impact on the outcome of pregnancies, but I would highly recommend you ask your GP to refer you to rheumie for proper testing.

recall · 08/01/2012 09:33

When they did all of the tests, they picked up that I had Factor 5 Lydon which means that my blood is prone to clotting. He said that this had not caused my mc but now we were aware of it, I should take asprin 75 mgs daily throughout the next pregnancies which I did. Who knows - it may have helped.

confuddledDOTcom · 08/01/2012 13:58

Oh no, no, no, no! What a moron! Please tell me that they actually told you that you are a thrombophiliac and explained what it means? I'm sort of assuming not as you said " I should take asprin 75 mgs daily throughout the next pregnancies"

It flipping well did help! Struggling to type because I can't get past "no, no, no, no, no!"

I'm no expert on Factor V but I know it's a thrombophilia and what that means.

recall · 09/01/2012 00:18

WTF ? Are you calling me a moron ????

I went into premature labour at 21 weeks because my membranes ruptured, this was due to a chronic infection in my womb.
Regarding my Factor 5 Leiden, I inherited one copy of the mutation from a parent (heterozygous) which increases by fourfold to eightfold the chance of developing a clot. Of course they explained what it fucking means.

If you read my post, I e x p l a i n that the results of the post mortem showed that the baby was fine.........I had an infection in my w o m b..........NO CLOTS !!!!!!!!!!!!

I was advised to take aspirin 75mgs daily in my subsequent pregnancies.

I did this.

I had a healthy pregnancy.

I then had a further mc

I then had 2 more healthy pregnancies.

Indeed you are no expert on Factor V

I am still grieving for my daughter who lived for a short time. I have come on here to try and offer some support to poor Laura2080 and you have called me a moron. Thanks you very much but there was really no need.

Moominsarescary · 09/01/2012 00:27

I think she's saying your consultant is a moron if he hasn't explained thrombophalic to you, not that your a moron x
