hypothyroidism and miscarriage

Hi i am a newcomer to all this, but really feel i could use some advice from anyone who has an under active thyroid. I have been on 100mg of thyroxine since Oct 2010. I have been feeling so much better since taking the meds, so my husband and i started trying for our first baby together. ( i have an 11yr son). We were over joyed that after 2 wks of trying we found out we were pregnant. But at 5wks i started passing brown discharge which the doctor thought was implantation bleeding. But several days later i started bleeding heavily and cramping. So i presume this is a miscarriage. The midwife says to do a pregnancy test in the next few days. Obviously we are devastated and upset. I am now worried that my thyroid issues are going to prevent us having a baby. Is there anyone else who has had this problem? thanks.

When did you last have your thyroid levels checked?

Hi thanks for getting back to me. I had my last blood test just before Xmas. I was told they were satisfactory. Wasn't told the actual number. But believe I only have to be checked once a year. Have you had any experience with this? Thanks again. X

You need to ask them for the actual number
for pg the nhs info says your tsh should be under 2

Thyroid issues should not prevent you having a baby
But you should get more monitoring and thyroid dose upped or at least checked once you are pg and during pg

Thank you to everyone for your help. I will talk to my go again about my levels. Going to wait a month before trying for a baby again. It's so hard. I am trying to stay positive. X

Thanks leonie. Any advice would be great. I thought as I was feeling fine. The thyroxine was doing it's job. I never considered that it would cause any problems in pregnancy. My go just said I would be checked more. My gp is very nice. But doesn't say a lot. I ask questions but he answers as briefly as he can. Is there any questions I should ask him when I see him next ? Everyone is so helpful on here. X

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

I'm in the same position, 175mcg a day and lost a pregnancy just over 4 weeks ago (I was 10 weeks). My GP referred me after the loss to the Endocrinologist at the hospital and I've since seen him.

It was a very quick meet as I think he was intending to come up with a plan for when I try again but I told him it was far too early for that convo.

But he did tell me that I should have been referred to him as soon as I announced I was pregnant. He felt that i should have been monitored earlier on, although he did make it very clear that there's no way we'd ever know if the loss was down to thyroid issues. He has now written to my GP to tell her that I must be referred in the future.

It would be worth a convo with your GP to see if you can get referred - earlier management might at least make you feel a bit more secure in the future.
