bleeding after ERPC

Hi Ladies,

I had an ERPC a week ago today and was a little crampy after with bleeding which was getting very light and (tmi, sorry) quite pale/orange in colour - like it was tailing off. yesterday started bleeding fresh blood - not gushing, no clots but noticeably more and different - and had bad cramps last night and some cramping today (nothing that nurofen hasn't knocked on the head). I'm sure this is normal, but just wanted someone who has been through this to tell me it is and to see how I go over the next 48 hours (although I don't fancy A&E on Christmas day).

Love to you all.

This happened to me, bleeding tailed off and then restarted heavily and suddenly. I did go to a and e but there was no need, except getting better painkillers. It lasted the night being very heavy then clots for three days then the mc was over. Probably just bits missed in the erpc. You only need to seek emergency attention if you are passing very large clots or soaking pads every hour or are in excessive pain.
I'm sorry you are going through this and hope it is over soon.

Thank you for the advice - I thought it was normal - just a shock to have it all start up again. And thank you for your kind words.

Hi Katherine, so sorry this is happening to you. I had exactly the same experience after my ERPC at the end of Nov. I went for a follow-up scan at the EPU ten days afterwards which showed they hadn't quite got everything out, which sounds like it's the same for you. Kat's absolutely right above, you don't need to worry unless the pain's unbearable, you're soaking through more than one pad an hour or there's a bad smell (all signs of infection). As the nurse at the EPU told me, we just happen to be the unlucky ones. I think part of it's the fact that you're so desperate to get it over with and don't want it to linger on, it's mentally hard and physically exhausting too to keep bleeding even after the op. I felt a bit cheated! In my case I'm pretty sure I passed the last of the retained products in a big bleed about ten days ago, the constant bleeding cleared up pretty soon after that.

If you can get back to the EPU they should scan you again, to see if/what's left. They only re-ERPC you if it's over a certain size, otherwise they'll leave it to pass naturally. They might give you some antibiotics too to make sure it doesn't get infected (I had a week of penicillin).

Try to look after yourself and I hope it's over for you soon. Take it easy and remember that you're not alone. Sending you hugs. xx

thank you again, I am awed and humbled by people's kindness. I have finished my anti-biotics today and will watch for any problems. Like you say, I just want it over and done with but am coping much better having had the ERPC than I would have done waiting to miscarry naturally. dh is off work as of tonight, so will try to put feet up tomorrow and let him play with dd. happy xmas to you Cream Tea and to you Kat.
