Sorry this is gonna be long,

I am trying to conceive baby#2 but am having brown bleeding before every period that I have, this is starting about 7-10 days before it is even due, does anyone know what causes this, does this affect fertility, and is there anything that can be taken to prevent it?

This has only been a real concern after having my little boy 2 years ago, and my periods have been haywire since!
I used to have this brown bleeding before but not for this long maybe 1 or 2 days.

I had 3 positive pregnancy tests 4 years ago only to start my period 3 days later, then I got pregnant again, only to have a placenta abruption at 33 weeks and then lost my precious daughter, then 2 months later I got pregnant with my son, who has had several health problems and has been very stressful, that was 2 years ago and now I want to give him a little brother or sister. We started trying about 6 months ago then my period was late took a test which was positive then got my period again 2 days later and was gutted.

My periods seem to be getting worse and im pretty sure im having early miscarriages,im wondering if its just not meant to happen, and people will think im selfish for wanting another baby when my son is so perfect.

I was always lead to believe that spotting before af, can be a sign of low progesterone, have you had your hormone levels checked?

Hi,

No I havent, my doc has given me scans and nothing came from that.

If it is low progesterone, can this be solved and how?

Get the doc to take blood tests to check your progesterone levels, and they make put you on progesterone suppliments post-ovulation each month. First you need to check if it is an issue. I hope your doc will be able to help soon.

I had nearly non-stop bleeding for a few months pre DC1, was put on progesterone tablets and they did help.

Also; found to have mild PCOS, was put on Metformin and got pg 1 cycle :)
And; was told i had cervical erosion (so every time we tried to have sex i would bleed lots) so stopped using tampons for a few months and it cleared up.

thanks everyone, will try and make an appointment tomorrow to see the doc, I did go about 6 months ago but she just said 'it's one of those things' and didnt really do anything but give me a ultrasound scan and everything was fine, but will ask her to give me blood tests and will refuse to leave the docs office until she agrees!! lol

Hey,

Just got back from the docs, and thankfully she took me seriously.

She is taking a blood test at day 21 to check my progesterone, plus she is checking for diabetes and thyroid. And she is doing yet another smear test :(

However she didnt seem to think that progesterone was a problem, so now I have no idea what to think if that comes back clear.

She also agreed with me that I recently had a miscarriage as pregnancy tests rarely have false positives :(

Well at least she took you seriously and you can get started on finding out what's going on. I know it's frustrating, every day that goes by without action feels wasted.

Chin up & good luck :)

Hi anon, have you tried temping? I've been reading 'taking charge of your fertility' and by taking your temperature you can tell if you're having early miscarriages based on how long your temperature stays high for. I hope this helps x

Hi anon,

I always use to have brown bleeding as well - for 3 or 4 days at around day 21-22, then a few days clear and then my period would start. I went to my GP, who sent me for ultrasounds, and checked my hormone levels - he suggested I went on the pill to sort it out!

However, as soon as I got pregnant with DD1, it stopped! In fact, I knew I was pregnant at day 21 as there was no spotting!

The spotting started again after DD1, and stopped again when I conceived DTs...It hasn't started again since.

I hope that your GP/nurse will do a thorough check to give you peace of mind.

x

Thanks for the advice everyone, although now I seem to be having spotting around day 14 too and lasts for about 3 days, then stops, then another week later my spotting will start again ready for my next period, I dont seem to get a break from it! Am really worried now and I still have to wait til the 21st til I can have my progesterone levels checked I hate waiting. :(

Hi there. This sounds very similar to my experience and it was a mc at 12 weeks which messed up my hormones. The result of this was brown spotting for about 4 days before my period kicked in, which made me constantly wonder about implantation bleeding. Also, because I was temping, I knew that if ovulation happened at all it happened late in an already long cycle. This also meant that my luteal phase (the time between ovulation and AF) was far too short for a little bean to be able to implant.

I'd second the temping idea. It does tend to make you a little obsessive, but can give you a much clearer idea of what's going on with your body. It also helps you too see if/ when you are ovulating. It's great that you're getting the day 21 test, but a progesterone test on day 21 is only useful if you ovulate on day 14. Really, it should be called the 7 days post ovulation test!

The spotting you have mid-cycle could be due to ovulation? It's only happened to me once, but it was the month I got pg.

Eventually, I was put on clomid because they felt I wasn't ovulating properly. I took it for one month and fell pg, so it may just be that you have a slight hormone imbalance and need a helping hand. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for all the advice guys

I already know that I am ovulating cos I use ovulation sticks and this usually happens around day 14 so hopefully the day 21 test should give an accurate result (fingers crossed)

to be honest I am so upset at the mo as I am already having spotting and im not due af til the 1st jan!

Feel like its just not meant to be as I have now just been told that my son has development delay (he had major skull surgery at 8 months) and am feeling pretty useless as if Im not doing enough there either.

Am wondering if life will get any better.

You sound like a wonderful Mum. Don't beat yourself up. If the ovulation/ conception/ pregnancy/ raising children thing was straightforward for everyone, the likes of all these threads would be pretty redundant!

I think these things always seem particularly cruel at times of year when you're expected to be impressively happy. Try to relax over Christmas. You never know, you could have a very straightforward case of low progesterone after ovulation. It's rather common and seems to hinder conception. I know this because we followed the sperm meets egg plan for 2 years straight, with no success whatsoever until we got help. Having conceived DS within a month the first time around, I knew there was something wrong.

Dependent on your results, you may have your LH and FSH levels tested at the start of your next proper period to check on egg reserves and the strength of your ovulation surge. I think I was ovulating, but the surge wasn't strong enough. I found the start of my AF hard to decipher given all the annoying spotting, but it helps them to pinpoint any problems that may be happening throughout the different phases of your cycle. It does seem that your spotting issues are getting more long-winded if you aren't due on until 1st. I hope you get the answers you're after, but feel free to ask if you have any more questions. Sorry for waffling on!

Hi Again!

Had the blood test done, does anyone know how long it takes for the results? My doc said 3 weeks but this seems a really long time and im impatient!

Am feeling really down at the mo as I want to know what is going on and hate all the waiting.

Had such a rubbish christmas as I have been on my own for most part of it as dh has been at work.

Hi all just an update

Been to docs this morning and my progesterone level was fine at 44.
However my prolactin level came up as high at 768, she has now referred me onto Endocrinology and have to wait now til the 31st for an appointment.

Has anyone had this? just wondering?!
