Sorry if this is distressing for anyone but I'm sitting here in shock and not sure what to do. Scan last week at 9 weeks suggested poss mmc but to return this week (today) for another scan. Sunday night had severe cramping passed a lot of blood and small jelly like sac. Cramps stopped and presumed mc had 'happened'. Just went to loo, felt large 'plop' and 5 inch or so liver like product came out. Sitting here not knowing what it is, whether i should take it to scan this afternoon, basically not able to flush down loo. I'm sure just remains of mc but so thought all over on sunday.

As well as the scan, will you also be seeing someone in the EPU? Could you give them a call and ask their advice?

I am sorry you are going through this janey. Just to let you know that this is exactly what I have had come out of me too when I have MC'd. Last time I was 12 weeks when I MC, it too was a MMC and had died between 8-10 weeks. I was quite shocked at the amount of clots - liver like stuff - that came out. I had a scan in the middle of the MC and the sonographer was able to tell me that I still had a way to go and that the MC was incomplete.

Sorry you are experiencing this Janey. That sounds like my mmc - when it started happening, large-ish clots like how you described came out. When I went for the second scan they said it was still incomplete, so I had an ERPC rather than waiting.

Thanks for support. Scan was pretty horrid of course. Sonographer(?) was lovely though and very sympathetic. Unfortunately doctor afterwards was very matter of fact and simply said there was more tissue to come out but not too much so no need for op and that I would prob carry on bleeding for a while and to contact them in 2 weeks if a pregnancy test still positive. I should have asked more but at the time you just don't. Just feeling very sad and teery tonight.

Oh Janey not surprised you're feeling crap
What you've described sounds just like my experience - thought was over basically, and then expelled something like you describe - the pregnancy sac I assumed. Bleeding (and pain) tailed off pretty fast after that. Had scan a week later which was clear. I would imagine for you the worst of the physical side is over. To some extent you might start to feel better after that, though obviously the emotional side is another matter.

The doctors can come over as pretty callous, I think becuase apart from the specifics of what will happen there is little they can say, they can't tell you why it's happened.

A thing to note is that what they say about it being 'like a heavy period' (if they have told you that, seems fairly standard) isn't always the case. It can be very painful. I've had two natural mc's and a botched op with my third mc and the first one was OK, the second very painful and heavy and the third, after the op when they left some 'products' in also very heavy and painful (and frightening). If your bleeding gets very heavy or painful do go back to A&E because the painkillers they can give you there actually make a difference to the pain in a way that nurofen etc won't. I'm not trying to scare you I just don't like to think of anyone suffering the pains without adequate painkillers.

I'm so sorry you are in this situation. It is truly awful I know.
I echo what Claire said. The doctors play it down. Heavy period is a gross understatement. I had the same after the op - products remaining, big clots to pass.
What you describe may well be parts of the placenta that had formed. It sounds like you already passed the sac. The so-called "products" - such as the placenta, are bigger than clots you might have in a period. I was so frightened that I went to A and E in the middle of the night, but it turned out to be nothing serious to worry about (so why didn't they tell me before?!)and it was all over 2 days later. This all happened 3 days after the op when I also thought it was all over.
Ask the doc if you should take it to scan, but I suspect they will say no. It is hard to flush down toilet, another option might be to bury it in your garden. Even if it is placenta tissue, and not the baby, it is part of the pregnancy you have lost and doing something like that might help you?
