How does it work - school trip payment

Just been told by a mum at school that as only 6 parents out of the class have paid for a trip next week it might be cancelled.

We received a letter about 3 weeks ago to say the £22 was voluntary and given a deadline which was 3 days ago.

How does it work at your school?

I think if a parent has paid the child should go with the other class but I'm not sure how it would work? What if they have too many kids? Would the parents be refunded if their child doesn't get to go?

I think the voluntary bit is confusing.
