So itchy skin

I'm peri menopausal (50) and for the last three weeks or so my skin has become so itchy its driving me nuts. I've read that the drop in estrogen levels causes the skin to start drying out. Its so itchy does anyone have any tips to eleviate it? I am showering morning and evening and going bra less when I can (especially bad on and around my boobs) but cant really go out without a bra. I'm using moisturiser and trying to drink plenty of water. I hate all this shit I feel like a leaf about to fall off the tree.

IME with early menopause hormone replacement therapy was the only thing that stopped it.

Have you had a browse in Boots at all the products for skin conditions? eg Eucerin? There are lots of products that are good as soap / shower substitutes and body lotions that are for anyone with eczema or dry skin. These might be better than using ordinary soap or shower stuff.
Brands include Aveeno and Avene.

Other than that, HRT if the symptoms start coming thick and fast.

I use waitrose sensitive bar soap anything else irritates me and Eucerin is great to moisturise. Are you sure you haven't got thrush as it's specifically round your bra area?

DameDiazepam I hadnt considered thrush, I've only had that a couple times but not around that area.

I have started with insane itching on the tops of my arms, it feels like there are millions of ants climbing over them.
My mum had the same thing on her face when she started the menopause (at the same age I am, 48). She was advised to take an antihistamine daily, which I now do and hey presto, the itching has stopped.

I had a run in with hives a few years back and they started to flare again about six months ago...along with a permanent "almost cold" ... anyway...I take an antihistamine every day, the hives stay away and the cold symptoms vanished

I ran out of antihistamines about ten days ago and this last week have done nothing but sneeze and itch, so I am back on them as of last night and have barely itched at all today. Still haven't worked out which comes first the hives or the itching...but once i start scratching they spread like mad.

Ah Ok, might try antihistamine then. is it ok to take antihistamine every day?

Ive been taking anti histamines for a few years now as without them i constantly itch. I have read that there can be a problem coming off them - i used to take them just in the summer for hayfever but one autumn i stopped and thats when the itching started.

antihistamines are safe but take care not to use any that cause drowsiness if you are driving and or drinking.

Far better to get to the bottom of what is going on though. Formication is a recognised meno condition - is this what it is?

I dont think that is what I have, it doesnt feel like crawly insects its just a general irritation itch with a sort of rash but not a rash. I think what MrsPooch has sounds like that though. I think I will go and see the GP.

I am in Peri on hrt. The strangest thing is I suffer from itching only when trying to sleep at night. Also doesn't feel like crawly insects- just an itch all over. Oh the joys.

I have very sensitive allergic skin and the Made from Earth Pure Aloe Treatment is in my opinion excellent it is not greasy and soothes the skin initially taking away the itch, a little goes a long way and worth paying a bit extra for a cream that works. This is also steroid free so you can use on the face and on a daily basis.
