I am 47 and have had one period this year - last was February. I feel fine but have insomnia the last 2 weeks. Really bad. No cause I can think of. So it must be hormones or lack thereof. I am thinking of seeing GP for HRT but wary. I am youngish but think I have worn out my poor ovaries - my periods were every 21 days from age 14! I think i am quite hormone sensitive - I had hyperemisis (bad vomiting) in pregnancies and vomiting with the morning after pill which I took once in the distant past. What are thoughts - low dose? I thought I'd wait till I got more symptoms and this insomnia might not last.

Do you think it could be that the nights are so light this time of year? It affects me.

Having said that, it is totally possible to have manopause insomnia. I get it, I am 43. Herbs/supplements/stuff that are wortth trying are: Valerian, hops, 5-htp, GABA, magnesium, Bach's Rescue Remedy Night, B6.

I have had awful insomnia since menopause, I had to use melatonin to be able to regain any kind of a sleep cycle I take HRT too. The HRT helped but the melatonin helped more.

Insomnia was the main reason I started on HRT though I was 53. I still wake in the early hours, rarely sleep right through, but usually doze off again. You aren't too young if you want to try it.

Maybe get black out blinds?
Sometimes the light keeps me awake and I have to turn out lights and get ready for bed much earlier with black out blinds etc.

In summer I don't seem to need as much sleep and in winter I could hibernate, and sleep for at least 12 hours!
Maybe accecpt that you have seasonal sleep cycles? It's too easy to get het up about sleep and this can cause anxiety which can stop sleep

On another note, where do posters get their GABA or melatonin - I thought these were banned?

I find Melatonin really works for me. I get it online from Biovea. They sell various strengths. I have 3mg and that seems to be enough for me.
