Any takers for a cheap Sunday out soon - probably in London would be best.

Suggestions for where are welcome...

Sounds good, what part of London?

There are lots of good parks, Dulwich and Kelsey around me, and I'm sure other people can name more central or northern ones.

Also free museums etc - where is that big wooden sailing ship/climbing frame place? If anyone gets it from that I'll be shocked!

Do you think it would be OK to post about parks on the 'Days Out' threads? You always discover the best ones by recommendation(or accident!)

I like the Kensington gardens playground for smallish kids (under 7). That's the pirate ship thingy you were talking about lydialemon

DSs love the pirate ship. Take a bucket and spade with you!! Superb in the summer when they turn the water parts on.

I'm up for it, although I think perhaps for the pirate ship thingie it might be better to wait until the weather is a bit better? What do you think?
I'd like to suggest Tate Modern (Turbine Hall brilliant for running around), I think they also have an art room like at Tate Britain. Will find out about that and post here. Then depending on weather/how much time people have, a stroll on the South Bank is always good, lots of street entertainers, and then coffee at the Royal Festival Hall (again, space for kiddies to run around while adult flop down to a nice cuppa or whatever!)

I checked the Tate Modern's website and they don't seem to have an art room but I found this:

Start
A drop-in event based on the Landscape suites. Explore modern art through these intriguing activities. Match clues, spin the disks or try our double-sided jigsaws. New activities and games are added seasonally. For under 5s, a booklet of simple looking and drawing games accompanies Start.

Age 5+. Free. Drop-in.
Go to Studio C, Level 3.
Every Sunday, plus Wednesday 18 February, 7 and 14 April 11.00–17.00.
BSL-assisted sessions on 1 February, 7 March, 4 April and 2 May.

That sounds good...although simply going to a park with a ball and other kids around would keep my two happy. But the activities thing sounds good for bad weather

Anyone else interested? Anymore ideas?

Basement in the Science Musuem, only problem is that it does get busy so best to arrive early. Then if the weather is good -picnic in Hyde Park and play at Kensington Gardens ( pirate ship thing ). ( 15/20 minute walk from science musuem )
If bad then there is an area at the Science Musuem where you can eat sandwiches etc...

All free, and both places have things for all ages - from toddlers upwards...

That would be my recommendation for a totally free day out in London with the kids.

Right then lots of suggestions, what about a date? I'm free on the 11th April but wondering if Easter weekend should be avoided at all costs How about end of April, 25th? seems a long way off though.

All of the ideas sound good. DD is 20mths and not overly interested in activities.

I especially like anywhere I can sit down and let dd run around - open space with not many things she can hide behind

The weekend after Easter sounds like a good idea. (Easter is april 11th isn't it?) And the weather might be good by then

Fizog · 19/03/2004 11:28

Yes easter is the 11th. I can't do the 18th though as it's my friends little girls first birthday, I feel I ought to keep it free as I'm sure she'll be doing something.

Easter weekend no good for me as will be away (hopefully!) but don't let that stop you if it's Ok for most of you. The only other date that's no good for me is 29 March.

I don't really want to travel into London oover easter weekend, that's why I suggest 25th?

but I'm happy to go with majority vote!

Wobblyknicks, come anyway - you're entitled to day out too!

I'm up for it too, depending on the date. I think I'm travelling up to Slough for a 4th birthday party on the 25th though.

I'd love to join you guys if that's ok? Tate Modern would be great and Royal Festival Hall too. I think indoors is a good idea generally at the moment as the weather's so dodgy and it might be hard to completely change plan at the last moment. I'm pretty flexible about anywhere in London so will just check out what other people suggest. I'm always free on Sundays.

mammya · 20/03/2004 20:42

Yes yes join us Evita, the more the merrier! I agree with you we'd better stick to indoor options. Let's see what others say.
