The Economist media request - unusual names for children

We've had a request from Tom Wainwright, from the Economist.

He says he “is looking to speak to people who have chosen unusual names for their children - why did they pick the names in question? I'd like to know the name they went for, but don't need surnames. No need for photos or video.”

If you'd like to share your story, or have any questions about the piece, please email Tom on with a brief summary of your story.

We at MNHQ don't have any further details about this and Tom won't necessarily be monitoring this thread, so if you have any questions please contact the journalist directly.

It's a tactic. They do all the media requests like this nowadays to protect the researchers from the MNers.

I read the Econmist, I doubt it would be a mocking or sneery article.

My guess is that it will be along the lines of Freakonomics, looking at how names correspond with class / wealth.

What's Balonz ?

KondosSecretJunkRoom Tue 30-Aug-16 19:56:56

It's in classics, a troll came on to ask what everyone thought of balonz as a name. I don't know how to link but it's funny and worth a read.

Balonz or Data perfect names

Dozer Thu 01-Sep-16 23:56:37

What is the premise of the article? That you have to be really rich and in a creative field to be zany?

Do names for imaginary DC count? (I am mega rich and zany in my imagination) the jamie/jools oliver baby name thread is good for ideas!

Dozer Fri 02-Sep-16 07:46:52

Thanks for posting the Balonz thread empressknowswhere, v funny!
