Think it can take a while. I've been LCing for 18m so my body slips back in (according to ketostix) about 36h after being off plan.

I found that I go into ketosis overnight. I went to have my urine checked and hadn't eaten breakfast and the Doctor said I was in ketosis. So I think its different for everyone. I wasn't even low carbing. Just hadn't eaten for about 14 hours. I think this happens with fasting too.

Related question: what ketosis urine levels are good for optimum weight loss? We have the pee sticks.

ketone measurements in pee are unreliable. you need a blood.monitor.

anyone can flip in and out of ketosis at any time. You have to keep it up. an adult will need at least 80% fat intake for the full length of time you want to be ketotic

as soon as you consume carbs, you're back to glycolosis until it's all burnt off

stick with the Atkins!

Get some Ketostix to pee on (beware, they are addictive to newbies). Before long you will clearly feel the difference between being in ketosis and not.

Ketostix are unreliable. If you are drinking as much as you should be, often your wee is too diluted for anything show, even though you are. And also when you have been doing it a while, your body adjusts to the new fuel and uses the ketones more efficiently, thus excreting less in the urine.

You're better off going on the signs.
Lower appetite, more energy, taste in mouth etc etc

Are there any negatives to being in ketosis? Anything to watch out for? Also: in the last few days (I'm doing very low carb) I've been feeling quite tired and have lots of joint pains and aches. Wondering if there's anything I'm overlooking?

Not sure also what someone meant (sorry forgot name) when saying you have to eat 80% fat when ketonic (sp). Am I daft? Don't understand at all what that means Confused

Ghost- when you said lower appetite, more energy, taste in mouth etc etc what does the taste in the mouth change to and what are the etcs? I've been LC for 2 months now and have lost a stone but don't feel any different and have noticed no change in my mouth.

negatives.. kidney stones, cholesterol

taste in mouth - you may smell ketones on your breath, mouth dry and metallic taste

I bought a box ketostix yesterday (newbie Grin) and will try one tomorrow morning first thing.

I did a VLCD nearly ten years ago now and did it for seven months (lost over 100 lbs). Ketosis was great, actually. I loved having no appetite and am looking forward to not having any again. I loved the energy too.

The breath issue is the big negative for me and I became paranoid that I had bad breath, so tried to keep a distance from people Grin.

I won't do a VLCD again, but this way seems the most normal and convenient; eating real food available everywhere.

Unfortunately some people may experience side effects on a ketosis-type diet. The usual symptoms are headaches, sensitivity to the cold, a metallic taste in your mouth, bad breath and just generally feeling a little out of sorts whilst your body is trying to adapt to the diet.

Some people can be really luck and experience nothing at all.

These side effects do get better once your body has got into the routine of it all and you should be feeling 100% and even have big bursts of energy.

Taking tablet form painkillers like Ibuprofen and Paracetamol should help as well as making sure that your staying hydrated.

I'm looking forward to the energy because I certainly didn't feel it today.

On the plus side, I am loving working with cream Grin. Yesterday I made a cheese sauce; it was lush. Today I made a chicken/gammon/mushroom cream sauce. Wow, yummy.

Did a pee on a ketostix this morning and shows trace according to the colour on the stick.

Weighed myself this morning and wanted to record fat % etc. Error message came up and, reading the accompanying leaflet, it may mean that it won't recognise over 50% fat Sad, which I am.

My weight is a couple of stone lighter than January but still 15.8, more than half which is fat apparently. Fuck. That's atrocious.

I aim to get it down to 30% but for the moment aim to get it below 50% so the scales will record it.
