paleo for weightloss

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

I need to lose 3 stone and started clean and lean recently. I have an auto immune inflammatory condition too and hoping this type of eating may help. Since starting I've found myself reading a lot about paleo too, at the moment I'm eating dairy but seem to have stopped grains, not sure yet which way I'll go, still researching. I have dropped a dress size in 3 weeks though so must be doing something right, even though I'm confusing myself.

Oh crap its already gone 11.00! Oh well supposed to be starting tomorrow anyway!

Charlie well done on your weight loss so far! If you are losing weight and feeling good maybe its not worth cutting out dairy?

Charlie maybe look at Primal then...very similar to Paleo but can include dairy...that's what I am trying to stick to and seems to work well for me.

Doing pretty OK today apart from having more veggies with my meals. Bit of a headache though as have had less caffeine as not having milk. Not snacking is pretty hard! Had breakfast at 9.00 so on track for 8 hour window.

Thanks for the link lollipop, going to have a read for tips. Are either of you actively losing weight or just following for health? I have done paleo on and off and followed the main thread (nc) but really want to focus on getting the weight off now but with more carby veg etc than lc bootcamp.

I've only been back at it since Monday but I already feel less bloated. In the past I have lost a good amount of weight/inches eating this way, even keeping dairy/potatoes/higher carb veg/rice in and even the odd grainy 'cheat'.

I don't actually think you need to be super low carb to lose weight, just lower than the general population, which really isn't hard if you even just cut out grains.

I want to drop at least two dress sizes...don't really care what I weigh but would like to be slimmer and am determined to do it this time and keep it off. We are going on a UK holiday in about 10 days and although I obviously won't really lose much before then I am hoping I will at least feel better. My next target is then a week abroad in October and I know I could look A LOT better and be at least a size down by then if I keep at it. Ultimately I am aiming to be at a size I am happy with by next October when we are planning to go to Florida. I reckon that is a realistic time scale considering I know I will not stick 100% to it all the time.

That sounds similar to where I am Panevino, I can eat rice and potatoes and lose weight, my downfalls are wheaty things and milk chocolate so I am going to try and not eat them until I am at my target Shock (can't believe I said put that in writing - start to hyperventilate). I would like to lose 2 or 3 dress sizes for a wedding in December.

panevino yes, have been looking at primal too. I don't have loads of dairy, just a couple of splashes of milk in tea, a bit of feta for a salad once a week maybe, and sometimes some Greek yogurt. I think I'm having too much fruit though, due to green smoothies for breakfast every day. Need to get my head around eating other things in the morning.

Can I join but cheat?

I am trying to eat more fruit and veg - ideally uncooked.
I am trying to eat more protein.
I am trying to not eat chocolate.
I am trying to not eat bread, pasta.

But I feel the need to eat porridge, rice, plus drink milk and coffee.

Must weigh myself tonight, need to find a regular time to have as a weigh in time.

Hello, can I come and hang out with you for a bit.

I don't have tons of weight to lose but would like some off (at least a dress size) and to just find a way of eating that means it doesn't creep back on again. I've done 2 months of no sugar in the past and felt so much better but fell off the wagon when moving house. I've been lurking about primal threads and sort of getting used to the idea and have decided to shuffle slowly in that direction.

At the moment I'm not fully there. I'm still having meusli or porridge for breakfast, but so far this week have kept lunches, snacks and dinners primal. Dh seems a bit bemused by the sudden appearance of low carb dinners on the table but is taking it pretty well so far (mainly by adding bread to everything).

Do you watch calories yumyum? Or just trust that cutting out the crap will do it?

{Waves and shifts own large bottom to make room for Cindy and Hear Me Roar}

Maintaining weight loss is def a common theme here, isn't it?

Charlie I am in two minds about calories; I think just cutting the crap will def work so long as not being tooo cheaty but for myself I might play with calories when it comes to maintaining or if weight loss isn't happening and its getting close to Christmas wedding target.

I think sticking with eating within an 8-10 hour eating window, not snacking too much and that old chestnut mindful eating will def help with weight loss too.

I caved and had one cup of tea with milk this eve - it was so nice but I think avoiding/ cutting back on tea with milk is a good thing for me as I can literally chain drink them all day long plus I think it always leads to an urge for an accompanying choc, piece of toast etc.

Cindy I forgot to weigh myself this morning so will do tomorrow... maybe we could have a weekly Thu eve/Fri morn weigh in for moral support?

gah weighed myself and it was about 10lbs more than I thought. There must be some mistake!

Doing pretty well today no tea or coffee yet other than herbal white tea and pomegranate, feel pretty good energy wise, ho headache and been quite productive Shock. I had to clean dog poop from outside our house which put me off breakfast ... silver linings and all that Wink.

Just had brunch of omelette with lots of peppers, onion and tomato in, followed by some strawberries and several spoons of nut butter. I am going out for coffee on the way to routine hospital app for dp, he is going to eat lunch and I may well have a cappuccino but no panninis or cake; is it just me who feels like it is a waste of money to have herbal tea in a cafe?

Weekly weigh in, maybe best if we pick our own day, but post about it once a week on the same day.

Does anyone have to get up early? I am up 5:30 and need breakfast before going to work. Hard to eat much at that time. Porridge I manage, I know it is 'grain' but I really don't feel up to making omelette at that hour of the day, I need something simple to microwave. Any other options than 'grain' ?

Had omelette, veg and fruit lunch today.

Cindy good idea. Mondays? Have you tried packing a breakfast to take with you and have when hungry? Parma ham, boiled egg, low carb muffin, cold veg, nuts... or you could make a green smoothie and put it in a flask?

Travelin glad its not just me Grin well done on your lent weightloss that sounds like a success! What were your favourite meals?

I'm up at 6am and also tend to just go for porridge or meusli. I've decided to just let myself have breakfast for now and work on that once I've got the hang of the rest of the day.

Did pretty well today at work. Salad for lunch with lots of veg bits in and boiled eggs for a snack... Until I got home and dh had made pizza for dinner. It was homemade so in the grand scheme of pizza pretty healthy. Also dh does them with no cheese so that's good.. Right? Maybe I need to find a primal pizza dough recipe and make him up loads of bases in a helpful sort of way.

I have the most inaccurate scales in the world ever. Would it be OK if I did waist measurement instead?

I find breakfast tricky too, but I managed soft boiled eggs and asparagus this morning. I take mine to work usually so can only think about eggs if working from home or weekend. I've been fine with taking the green smoothies. The rest of the day I'm fine, loving all the fish and meat with salad or veg and being able to have a proper dressing instead of some low fat crap is great.

Best to do what you can keep up rather than do strict paleo and totally fall off the wagon like me. I'm not that keen on porridge tbh, otherwise I would prob have it too as I make it for my children.

My tip is that I have an ikea frying pan; they are brill you can knock up a plain egg dish in the time it takes toast to pop, quick wipe then its clean. They are the best [saddo emoticon] Grin

Hi. I am a long term paleo eater. I don't eat breakfast as I do an eating window thing where I only eat lunch and dinner. However, my husband has recently tried to turn to a more paleo way of eating and he does eat breakfast. He doesn't like eggs so he has muesli that he makes himself. He does use some oats, but mostly uses a tonne of different chopped nuts, coconut and seeds. He eats it mixed into plain yoghurt. Just thought I would mention it for those who are struggling with breakfast. He makes a massive box of it so it is quick and easy to dish out in the mornings. He finds it much more filling than porridge too.

I keep frozen blueberries in the freezer and just take some out and stick in a bowl at night then add Greek yogurt in the morning, quick, easy and tasty...you could add some flakes almonds or other nuts too.

Hi, can I join too? Been doing this for 6/7 weeks now and lost 18lbs. Been pretty strict paleo but with quite a lot of fruit and this week I reintroduced a little bit of dairy (cheese and cream) as I was worried about calcium, still managed to lose 2 lbs this week despite this.

Cindy -I have to get up the same time as you and I do one of two things for breakfast which are fairly quick and painless. The easiest is half a tin of pears with a small amount of cream (a couple of tablespoons) along with cold meat (whatever I had the night before - chicken drumsticks are the yummiest). If I don't have any suitable leftovers then I'll mash a banana or use a hand blender to blend half a can of drained tinned fruit, beat this with an egg and then scramble it. Takes about 5 minutes and is really nice, even if it doesn't sound it!

Meant to add, I still have about a stone to go. This mornings weight was 10st 4 lbs which might sound not too bad but I'm five foot nothing.

I made my first paleo cakes today to go with morning coffee. They pasted the dh and dd test so officially a success! :o

Love the sound of the homemade meusili. I might give this a go.
