Week 3 - Autumn Low Carb Bootcamp - The Crossroads!(331 Posts)
So we have reached the end of the first two, strict weeks.

By now, if you have stuck to your knitting, you should be ketogenically adapted - which is to say, you should have switched your body from burning carbs to burning fat.
You now have a choice. You can relax things a little and can include some fruit (berries) and some nuts/seeds - and a little alcohol in moderation The rules of Bootcamp Light are on the spreadsheet.
You can stay on Bootcamp, if it suits you - as long as you promise me that you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad!
Another option, which many of us adopt, is to do Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.
The choice is entirely yours!

Had a bite of tiramisu tonight and realised, that if tweaked, it aint a bad low carb pud!
I made moussaka from the IPD cookbook tonight. It was incredibly easy and truly delicious.

A Word of Warning!
It is very common for people to report no or little loss in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5.
Please don't be downhearted if this happens to you!
In the first weeks, you will have lost water weight and will have emptied your glycogen stores (which doesn't happen if you're on a low fat/low calorie diet), as well as losing a bit of fat.
It seems as if your body then has to sort of 'take stock' of what it's doing.
Just keep on keeping on, and you will see the scales start to move again for you. Only this time, you will really be losing fat. After this, you can expect to lose 1-2lbs a week - which will all be fat.
I need to be poked with the big stick - FIL came round today with a big cheesecake and I let myself be railroaded into eating a slice (it was delicious, but won't be worth it if it buggers up all my low carbing efforts).
I think I'm going to try cutting right back on dairy this week. I feel like I've had too much cheese & cream!

By god I've been tempted by carbs this weekend! I've stood firm on the food. Significantly less firm on the wine, however - have shared a bottle with DH last night and tonight. I'm therefore not expecting to see a loss on the scales in the morning.
Stunt spritzers are an unforgivably degrading thing to do to good wine!!
Lily if I can't have berries in my yoghurt, then it has to be clotted cream! The sort of crunchy crust on top of the cream adds a lovely texture to the yoghurt with the crunch of the vanilla beans. [drools]
B/L - bacon, fried tomatoes, poached egg.
S - smoked mackeral in cream and marscapone cheese with horseradish and lemon juice.
D - roast chicken with mashed swede and roasted broccoli
Just checking in before bed. Stuntnun, that link was very useful. Today I had:
B 2 egg mayo on cucumber
L garlic chicken chunks fried in butter on green curly cabbage
D gammon, swede n carrot mash with cheese on, cabbage, gravy, yoghurt with a bit of blackberry n cinamon
S strips of streaky bacon, nice n crusty, plus some brazil nuts and a few blackberries. 2 cups of tea
more water than I need to. And I went on a bike ride and a walk.
Really felt like snacking today but it did not make me feel better. I resisted the crap in the cupboards. Fingers crossed for the weigh in in a few hours.
STS for me - but hardly surprising given I had my birthday celebrations this weekend. Lucky not to put on.
Back on the straight and narrow for me this week.

Just 1lb off this weigh in, but I know I was 2lb down on Saturday before horrendous TOMbloating commenced

Only 1lb for me too this week. Still at least it's going down
I know I've been eating far too much dairy over the weekend, I've been on call for work which means boredom and snacking. Kept it lc but a lot of cheese and greek yogurt got eaten! And philly with celery now I think of it. Must do better this week, but warning heeded and I won't be discouraged if I don't lose much. I see this as a long term WOE now.
Only a 1lb off here too- but I did a half marathon yesterday and didn't feel happy not having many carbs beforehand (despite doing lots of running normally on this WOE so I probably would have been fine) so I had some fruit and chocolate. Hence my small loss. Never mind, back on it now. And I think I need to realise that I can run long distances and do this...
Also, not decided whether to do boot camp or boot camp light. I'd like to go back to Briffa eventually as I find that easy to follow... But after this weekend I'm not sure..
Forgive me BIWI for I have sinned....a weekend of carby-twatishness (not much at all actually) and alcohol has resulted in 1lb on Actually I'm pretty leased with that, I have been sitting at a steady 13st all week (no change from last week) so to have only gained a 1lb this weekend is amazing. And it was a one off due to my cousins wedding...
Needless to say I think I'll be sticking to full on bootcamp this week

What is this IPD cookbook everyone keeps mentioning?
If spritzers are out Crabby how about alternating glasses of wine with glasses of sparkling water - same result but without ruining the wine.
One of the reasons for the week 3/4 stall is that when you are eating carbs then your body has an absolute carb requirement of 110-120 grams of carbohydrate a day. If you consume less than that, as we have been doing, then for a while your body manufactures what it needs to maintain this level, for example by gluconeogenesis. However once you are fat-adapted, as you will be after two weeks of Bootcamp, your brain will have started burning ketones for energy and your body's carb requirement drops to 50-60 grams per day. This new balance between your carb requirements and your diet can cause a temporary stall in weight loss around now. If you keep eating a low carb diet then one of the other effects is a decrease in hunger and you should start eating less: there is less need for snacking and some people find they go longer between meals or skip meals entirely. You will be eating less calories than you need per day allowing your body to use up its fat stores and the weight will start to drop off again.
Yay! 1 lb off. Am now 176 lbs.
So, I started this bootcamp on 1 Sept at 184lb. Weightloss so far of 8lbs but cannot put that on the spreadsheet!

BIWI I have gained a pound this week. I am on week 4 and had a bit of a blip with a night out with wine. Can I expect to start losing weight again next week provided that I stick to the rules?
1.4 lb off this week. I am fairly pleased with that but like all of us I always hope for a bit more. I am now 11st 5 lb so I'm getting there - slowly.
I think I might just stick to boot camp and see how it goes for a few more weeks before I go to boot camp light. Although I am tempted to start having chopped up nuts with my yoghurt in the mornings. I will give it some thought today. I suppose I could just have the nuts and stick to the strict rules the rest of the time. I don't like berries that much and I rarely drink alcohol so that could work.
