Low-carb bootcamp

Low carb high fat advice needed!

Hi all! I've been doing low carb high fat for 2 weeks. No bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. Lots of salad, veg, meat, cheese, nuts. I've lots 3lbs and I'm feeling pretty proud (was 10 stone 11 to start off). Has anyone else had success with this diet? It's going ok I think. I haven't been hungry or craving too much and I'm eating quite a lot of food but I'm worried I'm possibly eating too much still! Quite a lot of cheese! Do you have any tips? I'm 5 foot 6 and would ideally like to drop to about 9 stone 9. Thanks.

High fat low carb isn't a sustainable diet. Yes you will lose weight and quickly, however once you start eating carbs again you will put all the weight back on.

I did it for a while and lost around two stone but as soon as I started eating carbs again it soon meant the weight returned. There are carbs in fruit and veg but they are the health ones.

Also be aware of fast weight loss as it can cause medical complications with kidneys and the gall bladder. Drink plenty of water to keep flushing them.

If you can sustain it, good luck with the journey as low carbing does work and produces great results but takes a lot of long term commitment :)

With any "diet" if you go back to the way you are before then you will put weight back on.

Most people doing LCHF are doing it for life.

Several on the BC thread have lost 4+ stones in a year. It does work but you can't go back to a standard carby diet once you've lost weight.

It's certainly working for me. I've been doing it since mid May and have lost 3 stone (from 14 stone 13lb to 11 stone 13lb) without feeling hungry.

Took some time "off" over Christmas but ate what carbs I did eat mindfully and didn't go mad. Have already lost most (bar 1lb) of what I put on. I still have 20lb to go to my target, after which I'll review (I'm 5' 5.5")

The important thing about this Way of Eating is to change your relationship with food: To start learning to eat when you are truly hungry (and to stop when you are sated) - which is easier on HFLC; to stop being addicted to sugar and other carbs; and to enjoy what you do eat (rather than just gorge mindlessly or to comfort eat).

Come and join us on the Boot Camp threads. We're currently on Week 2, but you can also look at Week 1 (the OP includes "The Rules" plus a link to the "Spreadsheet of Fabulousness" which has lots of other resources as well as the optional Weigh-In sheet) and the preparatory thread to see if any of your questions or concerns are answered. You can jump in at any time Smile

Yes, come and join us on the bootcamp threads :). I lost 60lbs in 2017, all but 7 of these by low carbing. I feel better than I have for decades, look younger (ok, that may be a delusion!), have loads of energy and for the first time in a long time have a sense of freedom around food.

It totally worked for me. I wish I'd known bootcamp was there/properly used it when I was starting out!

I've been doing this WOE since November 2016 and still totally committed to it. As prettybird says, it totally changed my relationship with food. I still enjoy food but am no longer a slave to it. I don't crave sugar; I don't feel guilty after eating; I don't comfort eat. I feel natural hunger but never 'hangry'. Revelations.

But it is a long-term commitment. If you go back to the way you ate before, you'll become the weight you were before. And lose all the other great keto benefits! That's not to say 'no carbs ever again' - I'll have a frozen yoghurt on holiday or a slice of DS' birthday cake, but it genuinely is a special occasion thing.

Good luck!

Ignore the first post, you can integrate carbs back in and still lose weight, you just need to do it with certain carbs and slowly. As a pp said, if you simply go back to eating as you did before, of course you will gain weight, that goes for any diet.

As for this woe, it's the easiest diet for me to lose weight on without feeling deprived, and yes it works.

Well done on getting started. Sounds like you know the rules but have asked for tips so here's my tuppence worth after 2 years on it. (Lost 2 stone initially and now maintaining sort of, could do with losing another half stone I think but anyway...)

Drinks lots of water (boring i know but so easy to think you're hungry when you're not).

Fizzy water with a fruit jerbal teabag in tastes like ribena. Well sort of...

Saganaki. Most amazing cheese you fry and it magically tastes like cheese on toast. Have with stiry fry veg or salad.

Eating out doesn't mean cheating. Get it into your head that this way of eating is fact, look at the menu before you get there online and decide on your low carb options before you arrive and do not change your mind.

Have lots of cooked meat in the fridge like grilled chicken slices marinated in nice stuff or meatballs so if you get snacky there's no need to cheat.

That's it for now. Will add more if i think of any but hopefully some help?

Having been running the Low Carb Bootcamp on Mumsnet since 2012, I think I'm fairly well-placed to say that it works!

@fromtheshires:

Well, doh, it's the carbs that made you put weight on in the first place, so of course the weight will go back on if you just resume what you were eating before.

The trick with low carbing is to find out just how many carbs your body can tolerate before you start to gain weight again. There are very few people who can just go back to bread/toast/sandwiches, crisps and chocolate, pasta/rice-based meals at every meal, without gaining weight.
