LCHF problems

I've been following the LCHF "way of life" for 4 months now. I was advised by my cardiologist that he found it a brilliant way to keep weight under control. However, he was unaware that I have a familial issue with high cholesterol. I have just had lipids done and my cholesterol is 7.8, HDL chol 1.77, LDL chol 5.4, chol/HDL ratio 4.8, triglyceride 1.7. The only thing that is lower since starting my diet is the Trigyceride, which was 2.1 previously; the rest are way up, specially the Chol figure of 7.8 which used to be 5.9. I have also had my statin dose doubled since the 5.9 reading. Eeep! what do I do?

I meant to add, I've also had a lot of problems with arthritis in my fingers, and the C-Reactive Protein count is high. My fat intake is moderate - I have 4 coffees a day with 2 tsps cream in each, but only a small amount of cheese, Greek yogurt and meat. Most of my diet is green veg and chicken stock as soup base, eggs (2 per day). I fast from 6 pm till 11 am, eat only 2 meals, but have lost only about 7 kgs. I have to be careful with cruciferous veg because of Warfarin. Any ideas, please? My doc has never heard of LCHF and was horrified...Shock

Food for thought on statins here

There’s a theory that vascular disease is not caused by high cholesterol, but by inflammation of the arteries. Cholesterol comes along and helps ameliorate the inflammation, as it’s a vital part of cells walls. It builds up into plaques where it becomes maladaptive at that stage. It becomes guilty by situation… its found at the site of thickened arterial plaques, so it must therefore be the cause of the disease. But that’s rather like a crap criminologist turning up at a crime scene, finding police officers there already, and concluding the police carried out the crime. Get rid of the underlying causes of inflammation… processed foods, refined carbs, industrial veg oil, sugar, smoking etc and you reverse the plaques. Taking statins is like fire fighting a mains gas fire, without isolating the gas flow. They may be useful in some cases, but high cholesterol probably isn’t bad per se.

Shocked that your GP hasn’t heard of LCHF, it’s one of the main debates raging in nutrition/medicine at the mo! Talk it through in more detail with your specialist.
