I'm starting today, totally clueless so I'm off to the recipe thread shortly!
I'm aiming low carb rather than cutting it out totally. Got about 6 weeks until my birthday and I'd like to be slimmer and fitter by then.

So far today I've had
2 fried eggs on 1 slice of whole meal bread with real butter
Mint tea (no sugar, usually I'd have about 1/3 of a spoon so I've just cut that out)

I'm starting this tomorrow. I lost some weight in the pre-Xmas bootcamp but couldn't get back into it after xmas. Have now put a lot of it back on and am going on holidays in 6 weeks... eeek. So back on it from tomorrow as it seems to be the only thing I can stick to for longer than a couple of days!

Will join in tomorrow with my food diary.

Low carb is about low carb - it's not no carb! You shouldn't be cutting out carbs completely, but you should be getting the carbs from vegetables and salad.

But why are you eating bread?! That's not low carb!

I'll join as well! I've never completed a Boot Camp, so let's see if I can manage the next one (with a sneaky early start). I have some fruit to eat up, so I won't post my food diaries until I'm LC for real, but I'll keep an eye :).

Blush told you I was clueless, I had breakfast before I started reading the rules!
I behaved myself for the rest of the day though and have started today with bacon and eggs instead.

When I said I was going low carb not no carb I meant eating less bread/potatoes/pasta/rice (the obvious carbs!). After reading the rules I have seen the error of my ways.

I'm now trying to meal plan for the rest of the week so I don't trip up again

Everyone makes mistakes when they first start .). Saving the vegetable list and keeping an eye on that really helped me - I was definitely surprised by some of the things on there (like green beans and peas!)

And swaps like courgetti or cauli rice stopped me feeling too deprived, although everyone has their own way, as I'm sure you saw in the recipe thread. Good luck!

My diet is always so weird when I'm trying to lose weight, I'm ashamed to record it. My breakfast so far has been:

  • tablespoon of leftover nutritional yeast from vegan phase
  • cup of tea
  • second tablespoon of leftover nutritional yeast from vegan phase
  • glass of soy milk
  • teaspoon of protein powder
  • half a bowl of tomato soup

Just about to go and have another weird protein powder teaspoon snack. Why can't I just stick to three meals a day?

PlayNice - one of the key principles of Bootcamp is avoiding process food. There's nothing natural in your list above!!!

Report
BIWI · 13/04/2016 21:26

processed that should obviously say!

Report
PlayNice · 13/04/2016 23:55

Awh, there isn't? Nutritional yeast is just deactivated yeast flakes. Not much different from what you'd put in bread (except it doesn't make you terribly gassy).

And the protein powder is unsweetened and unflavoured, so it's not like I'm consuming a load of chemicals - it's just whey protein.

But I do get your point. I know we're cutting down on the processed meat etc and I wouldn't have been posting about a load of sugar free diet coke or the like. Good to know my weird powders aren't allowed either! I'll get some more wholesome things to snack on in.

First day back on it yesterday and it went ok:

B: Cheesy scrambled eggs and tomatoes
L: Bacon, eggs and spinach
D: Chicken Chorizo Mozarella thingy from the Lean in 15 cookbook with veggies

Snacks were some nuts and a pepperami (not great I know but I was desperate!)

I need to get back on the low carb wagon. I have somehow managed to maintain my loss of 2st from last year but I have been far from disciplined in 2016 so I need to reinvigorate myself.

It's my 40th next year so I am giving myself a whole year to shift another stone - hopefully that's feasible!

I start every day with good intentions but usually slip when I pick the girls up at the end of the day and have some kind of snack with them. Oh and chocolate has crept back in on a pretty much daily basis!

I want to rid the house of all the remaining Easter choc and then start BC-light with a vengeance!

So I will check in on the thread even though I know I have already cocked up today by having a small piece of toast after my perfectly delicious and satisfying Low carb breakfast of ff yogurt and berries. What a nob I am....!

Anyone got agood ragu/bolognese recipe? What do people use instead of carrots? Do you still use tinned toms/passata?

Report
lisbapalea · 14/04/2016 20:50

The supermarket basic range chopped tomatoes tend to be lower in carbs than the premium ranges - the tomatoes are often not as ripe so not as much natural sweetness.

I still use 1-2 carrots in a big batch (a big batch for me would prob do about 8 adult portions), but just increase the amount of celery, shallots, and mushroom / green pepper to bulk out the veg and stay within low carb "rules".

PseudoBadger · 14/04/2016 20:52

I use leeks, shallots, celery and garlic as the base. Then use 20% mince and Waitrose essential chopped tomatoes which are 3.6 per 100g

Nice to see you all here! So to clarify I'm doing bootcamp to BIWI rules, so no bread and no weird powders Wink

Just about to eat steak, broccoli, spinach and leeks (all buttery)

I will do leeks, shallots, celery and mushrooms then.

I've had
B: 1 rasher bacon, 1/2 Costco frankfurter (processed but gorgeous) and 2 scrambled eggs
L: 1 chicken breast, ranch dressing (no time to make salad, must do better in future!)
T: Mince Bolognese on courgette boats topped with cheese and oven roast veg

Tesco sell a Vegetable Starter thingy that is finely chopped onion, carrot and celery which I often put into spag bol, it isn't too bad carb-wise in a big batch

Question here. How much veg should we be eating? The Scandinavian Diet says that if you are a porker like me your veg should almost be a garnish but I find then that I eat very large portions of protein and fat. Should the veg be sparing, half a plate or loads as long as it is low carb?

Second question. Should we limit fat at all? I know it is ok within reason but is there a guide of don't exceed a certain amount? If I have eggs with butter and cream for breakfast, mayo with lunch and veg with butter or cream for tea will it be too much?

backonthewagon · 14/04/2016 21:43

Kummerspeck How did you make the bolognese?

Report
Kummerspeck · 14/04/2016 21:53

I used a pack of this and beef mince, cooked off with garlic and herbs then a carton of passata over it and simmered. I just go for the lowest carb passata I see on the day and hope it will be alright. It made a good 4 portions, may even last more

backonthewagon · 14/04/2016 22:25

Any veg in the mince?

Just the chopped veg pack in the link and the passata in that one as I served it on courgettes and with oven roast veg

Report
backonthewagon · 14/04/2016 23:20

Sorry didn't see the link!! Veg is meant to be really important I think but stick to things that are 5g or less per 100g.

Report
PlayNice · 15/04/2016 09:28

I thought it was under 3g of carbs per 100g (with special allowances made for tomato at 3.1g otherwise everyone would be too sad). I might be wrong, though.

And I thinkkkkk the carrots in that base mix aren't allowed and that some of the Bootcampers use shallot instead of onion because of the lower carb count?

No expert though! slinks back to corner of shame with the weird powders
